Add Is Different Than Adhd

Updated

does anyone out there have the problem I have seems even some Dr's don't understand the difference between ADD and the classic ADHD. Even as a child ,I was different all the kids went out on Sat mornings to play while I couldn't even wake up. I couldn't stay awake in class. Could never keep it together in school. I was always the class dummy. Then I became over weight in my early twenty's. All of a sudden when a Dr put me on diet meds I had a brain that really worked. I have been on concerta for about ten years and all of a sudden I'm back to my old state.can't wake up, can't concentrate. What if anything can some one advise me to do?

YOU MAY WANT TO TRY A MEDICATION VACATION OR ANOTHER THING THAT HELPED WAS WEEKEND AND WEEKDAY DOSES BEING DIFFERENT. ALSO KEEP IN MIND CONCERTA WAS ORIGANIALLY FOR CHILDREN. AS TIME GOES BY OUR BODY CHANGES AND YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK INTO NON STIMULANT DRUGS THAT TREAT ADHD. ONE NON STIMULANT THAT IS USED IS CLONIDINE, HOWEVER YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WITH MEDS DUE TO THE FACT THAT MOST MEDS ARE USED TO TREAT TWO OR MORE ISSUES. (CLONIDINE IS ALSO USED FOR BLOOD PRESSURE.)

I do appreciate your response, however I have extreme ADD. It is very different than ADHD. I don't have any of the hyper problems. I am very low key and can't concentrate at all. clonidine will only make me more tired. So many people confuse the two .Any of the meds that are made to calm down a person with ADHD only make me less able to live life. Its hard to explain the difference unless you live it. I had a Dr who was great and worked with both types of conditions however he is no longer in practice. So now I just have to find a good Dr that has experience. So many people think if you need stimulants you want to abuse the drugs. When in fact if taken properly they just give you your life back. Thank you for your response

The reason people confuse the two, is because the medical community and scientific researchers do not consider them to be different. In the medical literature, both ADD and ADHD are different names for the same disorder.

Here's an example:

And yes, as was already stated, it is normal for your body to get used to the dosage of any medication you have been taking for that long. You should consult your doctor about trying a different medication, or changing the dosage.

Are there any other questions or comments?

I would like to thank all of you who took the time to respond. I have after a lot of investigating found the Dr who prescribed my concerta and is well aware of the difference's between ADD and ADHD. He's great! and also diagnosed my son with ADD. His practice is mostly adolescents with a lot of emotional problems who do have ADHD. He would always say { I could make a million dollars if I would just write a book on the difference between the two. That being said I would like to take a moment to say my son never had any problems he was just the kid no one paid attention to because although he was struggling he was not the noisy wheel. I knew he was going through the exact thing I did when I was his age. And I was not going to let him lose a chance to have a better more productive life then I had because no one helped me. He is now a police officer with a BS degree in criminal Justis. Who no longer takes meds because while taking concerta he figured out a way to work with in his way of thinking. He often says however the meds helped him make it through high school and college.
Now back to me, I have done all of the things some of you have suggested, I always take a mini break from my meds when ever possible. Like weekends if I have nothing to do that requires me to stay on a taske. So I'm not one of those people who just wants more and more medication. I am a CMA so I am all to aware of what can happen. When I see the Dr next week I'm sure he will do what ever is necessary to get me back on track. I don't know where most of your replies are coming from but if you are in the way of IRENE I wish you and your family a safe weekend.

See an experienced psychiatrist or neurologist. I don't mean to sound condescending but "Board Certified in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry" is a good clue the guy knows his stuff about ADD and ADHD. I personally find neurologists too annoying, probably for the same reason I don't like Dickens — too many words, too little info.
