Does an "A59" pink oval pill have the same effect as Klonopin for your anxiety and depression? Does it give you the same effect?

Hi Daisy,

A pink oval pill marked A59 is reportedly identified as Paroxetine hydrochloride 40 mg. This medication is marketed for use in treating depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and other related conditions. As far as determining how it compares to Klonopin, something to note is that they are in two different drug classifications and have a different mechanism of action by which they work in our bodies.

According to medlineplus.gov, Paroxetine is in a class of medications called selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It treats depression and other mental illnesses by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.

By contrast, Klonopin (Clonazepam) is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

So to answer your question, no, they do not have the same effect because they work differently in the brain.

In order to know for certain which one is right for you, I'd recommend working closely with your doctor through trial and error.

Hope this helps!

I've been taking paroxetine for 20 years and just realized they changed the pill color and shape ij the past month. It is generic for Paxil which is one of the original antidepressants. I've also been prescribed benzodiazapines on and off over the years. Klonopin, as well as diazepam (valium) are used in cases of anxiety disorders, trauma related disorders. I have reoccurring first hand experience in both types as well as depression. Paxil (paroxetine) has been most effective for depression. I feel a normal boost of energy to get up and out of bed and a natural happiness from Paroxetine. Even after mamy years. I've tried 5 other SSRIs in the first few years, and none worked as well as Paxil, for me at least. Everyone is different. Bodies react differently to all medications. Your primary Dr. Would be the most helpful place with most experience. Or a mental health counselor.
I hope this helps.
