Meperidine is a fast-acting opioid analgesic drug. It was the first synthetic opioid synthesized in 1932 as a potential anti-spasmodic agent. Does this answer your question? It was all I was able to find.

As far as having to take Promethazine with this pill; that is actually something that you will need to discuss with your doctor. No one over the internet can possibly know your medical history or how this drug affects you, as well as the benefits or disadvantages that it provides you. Only your doctor knows why you take Promethazine with this pill, as he was the one to prescribed them together. This could be based on your medical records, your current health, drug synergy (they might work well together), or various other reasons.

I located the pill in description to be Meperidine HCL (50 mg).

It is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. To answer your question, I think since it has a high potential for abuse, I would assume that it is a good pain medication.
