Hey everyone, im recently cutting down from 16mg of dilaudid every 3-4 hrs to im at 4mg every 4 hrs now. Ive been on dilaudid for 10 months for a tumor that went undiagnosed for 8 months. Most doctors thought i was just drug seeking because they couldnt find out what was causing my pain, so im relieved they finally found something and i had it removed and i feel so much better. Now all my other problems are solved except for the dilaudid dependance. Any tips on getting off this stuff. It gets extremely unbearable after just 5 hours from the last dose. I know i dont need it for pain anymore, i just want to be off everything and back to normal. Any help would be appreciated. ## Hey, that's all normal. I'm in the same boat but w/oxycodone. Anyone who's not an opiate user (and e...

I take 8mg 4x a day for baseline pain andI take oxycodone for brakethru pain. I want to get off the dilaudid, it works well, but I think it is masking neurological symproms ## Ive been on that same thing for 9 y ears and i go to the docs my husband is making me quit. Which i know is for the right reason but what do i do for pain and now depression . im taking substex but i cant sleep barely eat . i m scared ## The best way to stop any opiate that you've been taking for a long period of time is via a slow, careful tapering. Your doctor should be able to help you set up a plan that is safe for you to try. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, and constipation. Medline Plus...

My pain Mgmt. doc. stopped giving me dilaudid 2mg, 5 times a day and fioricet 2 times a day as my urine always came back negative. I mean, she just cut me off and I am afraid as I do not know or understand what I will experience. Can someone please explain to me what all to expect as I do not see another pain mgmt. doc. for four months. Thanks for listening to my problems, Sally ## Hi I feel that we're in a similar situation, as my prescribed Xanax more than most of the time comes back negative in my UA -a few times I actually ran out of them 2 days before my dr.visit and I told him that I had taken a half a few times during the month do to just felling I needed it. I'm prescribed one .25mg and one half a day which comes out to a very small dose of .375 daily. I've been warn...

Will I get sick from taking 4-12 mg of dilaudid for approx 60 days? I am having a hip finally tomorrow. Thanks ## Hello, Boston59! How are you? It is difficult to say with certainty. It really depends on your own body and how it reacts to withdrawing from a medication like this. For example, when I had my surgery and was taking Oxycodone for a few weeks afterwards, I didn't have a problem stopping it, when no longer needed, but not everyone does well. Have you discussed the issue with your doctor? How often do you take it? This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. ## If you didn't use it iv. With a needle prolly not if you shot them good luck with hell g...

I am 19 weeks pregnant. I have been taking 2mg Dilaudid every four hours daily, which would be a total of 12mg in a 24hr period. I have been taking it since 13 weeks pregnant, so a little over 6 weeks. I have been taking it every single day for chronic kidney pain. My doctor decided to transfer my care to a pain management clinic, and my appointment is not until Tuesday, it is currently Saturday. My OB refuses to write me a script to get to through until my appointment, and even though I have been taking them only as directed, they want be to come in and be converted to Methadone. NOT HAPPENING. I will suffer through all the pain in the world before having a child born to Methadone. My OB has refused to wean me down on the medication, so I am currently off it cold turkey. My last dose w...

I've been taking 8-12mg dilaudid daily in 2-3 doses. It's been 27 hrs since my last dose and I'm feeling it. The feelings of emptiness and hopelessness are overwhelming me. I've been crying all day. When will these feelings go away :( ## It may take several weeks for things to improve. Other withdrawal effects you may experience, as described by the FDA, may include rebound pain, nausea, fever and chills. Has there been any change, yet?

I was wondering if anyone might help. I have been off my pain meds for 30 days now. I was taking about 320mg of oxycodone and 4-4mg Dilaudid a day. I quit cold turkey and havent had any meds in 30 days. It's been the worst month ever but believe it or not I am feeling much better. Im not having any more withdrawal symptoms. I am hurting very bad today in my neck where the problem is. I am wondering if I take a half or even a half of a half does anyone know if the withdrawal symptoms will come back. I definitely don't want to go through that again. I don't want the meds anymore I am just got to do something for the day to be able to move. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ## I'm pretty sure once you have a tolerance it stays that way for along time. It did...

My doctors don't seem to think there's much withdrawal if there is med in the pump. I know the change in med will cause withdrawal. Has anyone been in this situation? I've read about handling withdrawal here. I just wonder how this may work and how much the med in the pump will help. ## It really depends on what dosage they are giving you of the Dilaudid, if they make sure it is equivalent to, or a little higher than the amount in your Fentanyl patch, then you shouldn't experience any withdrawal issues. Withdrawal only occurs if a medication like this is completely stopped, without being replaced with anything else. Your doctors should calculate an equivalent dosage and set the pump up to deliver that amount, which is why they probably aren't worried about withdrawal...

I missed my dose... I take it every 12 hours. I was 5 hours late and took one. It is now 5 hours later and I'm still in withdrawal. When will this end? Why isn't the pill stopping the withdrawal? ## It is very odd to have gone into withdrawals that soon. What types of symptoms are you experiencing? The NIH lists the typical withdrawal effects as possibly including fever, chills, rebound pain, nausea, and diarrhea. What was the dosage and how long were you taking it?

I would really love an answer to my question/issue. I have been taking dilaudid for a while due to a terminal illness (I am looking at around 18 mos.-2 yrs. they tell me). I have been dealing with this illness for over a decade and no matter the narcotic medication, I really RARELY deal with withdrawal symptoms in the way I read about. I ran out of my meds for about 9 days after taking for many years and despite some unpleasant night sweats, that was it. It was my fault I ran out, should have called the doctor and let it go over a long weekend. He asked me how I could tolerate it and I told him it wasn't bad, the pain was very unpleasant but I had very mild withdrawal symptoms and have always been this way. Anytime I've wanted or could take a break, it's been a quick taper o...

I knocked about 2 weeks worth of dilaudid down my sink by accident when I was brushing my teeth yesterday morning. I saved 4 pills. I take 4mg-4x per day and was switched last month from morphine to fentanyl 25mcg patches every 72 hours. I have been on the dilaudid for 5 months. I'm very concerned about the withdrawal I'm going to go thru without my meds. Do you think the patch and a few leftover morphine pills from last month will help my situation? Will they make the withdrawal go away faster? I also have 2 subutex pills that are older. Should I take the subs or will they put me in a precipitated withdrawal with the patches? I don't see my doctor for 13 days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Please help. ## Please be careful with the fentanyl. I'm going thru so...

On day 4 of cold turkey Dilaudid withdrawals. Severe back pain sufferer. Was on 24mg/day for about 18 mos. Brutal. So tired I can barely move, add to that the back pain with limited muscle support and you start to get the picture. Worse symptoms have been diarrhea, insomnia, headaches, mental strangeness and I'm in too much of a general fog to remember what else. Only reason I've slept at all in the past 3 days is Temazepam. But at best an hour or two at a time. Not a natural narcotics lover. No pain, no drugs. Have Diaz and Temaz for a general insomnia problem anyway. Plus if you don't sleep and have a pain problem you're toast. To be completely honest, my doctor is a total F***ing A****le and a quack. I live in a rural area and there's no choices except this idiot ...

I've been taking dilaudid 4mg once sometimes twice a day. At the end of the month when I run out, if I take a couple of Tylenol and codeine will it help till I get my pills? ## Hello, Sue! How are you? It may help, a little, but it is not equivalent to Dilaudid, so it will not be an adequate long-term replacement. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. For example, it takes 1.12mgs of Codeine to equal each 4.5mgs of Dilaudid. Is there anything else I can help with? ## As per my original post, I've been taking 4mg of Dilaudid for a year (two a day). Will oxycodone 5mg help with withdrawal?

I'm very nervous, i am currently taking 8mg of hydromorphone and 30 mg of oxycontin a day and might have to have a surgery. I suffer from chronic pain from hideous chronic neuro lyme disease. I started taking hydromorphone because it actually helps with terrible undeniable chronic pain. If i am told i need surgery i will have to tell them because i would not be able to come home for 3 days. I am prescribed the oxycontin but not the dilaudid, and i heard the withdrawals would be hell on earth. Any experience from anyone? ## Hello, Holly! How are you? Certain medications can also interfere with anesthesia, so not tell them could put you at great risk, or possibly cause life threatening complications. Thus, it is best to be honest and tell them everything you have been taking. The FDA ...

Hi, About three years ago during treatment for rectal cancer, I was given Dilaudid and Fentanyl as part of a pain management program. During a 10-day hospital stay, Dilaudid was injected sub-q every half-hour by means of a pump, and Fentanyl was injected by nurses when necessary (4-5 times a day). After discharge from the hospital, I kept the Dilaudid pump but, fortunately, Fentanyl was no longer required. I stayed on the pump until surgery 6 weeks later. Dilaudid was administered for another 10 days after surgery, but since the cause of the initial pain (a large tumour) had been removed, I no longer needed the medication. Withdrawal was limited to a couple of days of shivering (this was during a heat wave). My question is this: how long after taking medications as powerful as these doe...

will there be hard withdrawals for someone who injects 1 8mg dilaudad daily for 4 months? ## It really depends on the person, there are likely some people that won't, but most people probably will experience some withdrawal effects. Learn more Dilaudid details here. The severity will also depend on the person and the way their body reacts to such. Medications and withdrawal effects are highly individualized. Are there any other questions or comments? ## So honestly you might get sick but I inject my dilaudid all the time and usually blow through a g script of 90 on a week... But dilaudid withdrawal is really not that bad it only lasts like 72 hours and the symptoms peak 36 hours after your last dose. While they are intense symptoms it's really easy to get through with some Advil...

I was recently hospitalized and was given dilauted and morphine for 8 days. I was then sent home. I am now suffering from abdominal pain and cramping 4 days later. I did experience abdominal pain while in the hospital. Is this related to the morphine and how long will it last? ## Dilaudid contains Hydromorphone, so it is a narcotic, just like the Morphine, so it could also be causing some of the problem. I can't say with certainty, but it could be some mild withdrawal symptoms, which can happen with narcotics, however, you were only on them for a little over a week, so it really shouldn't late more than a few days. If it continues or gets worse, please make sure to contact your doctor. Are there any other questions? ## Thanks for the info. I will definitely see my physician if t...

Had a slip and Took 40 mgs oral dilaudid at 945 thus morning. Its now 545 pm. Is it ok to take my suboxone now? ## Hello, Tim! How are you? You need to be in full withdrawals, in order to take Suboxone, otherwise the Naloxone in it can throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. When did your doctor advise you to take it?
