Will Gabapentin Help With Drug Addiction

My husband is prescribed gabapentin. He has been taking it for about four years now. He first took it while in rehab to overcome opiate addiction. He can take ten 600mg tablets at once and go about his day. When he runs out he buys it through other means. When he can't find it, he takes opiates. I am an extreme enabler and I give him money every week. He lies and steals and pawns things to support his habit. I need help. I don't know what to do. He wants help but doesn't want to go to rehab. How can I help him and save our family? ## Sara, that's tough to hear. You pretty much described me. My wife took our 3 kids and stayed with her parents for a week. It scared me so bad that I let my pill addiction ruin my life. I talked her in to coming back and I continued to take p...

Can you take Gabapentin with Zubsolv safely? I have been on Gabapentin for a while now but just started taking Zubsolv for opiate addiction and don't know if it's safe to take together. ## Yes, you can take Neurotin with the Zubsolve. I take both daily. ## They can be taken together, as Deanna has stated, but the FDA does warn that combining may result in more severe symptoms of respiratory depression, such as drowsiness, dizziness, sedation. You should also be aware to watch for extreme drowsiness, shallow breathing, and other signs of respiratory distress. Is your doctor aware that you are taking both of them? It is always important that you be properly monitored, for your health and safety.

I am an opioid patient and when I can't get relief a friend told me that taking 400mgs of gabapentin helps the sickness. Is this true? ## Yes it does help, 600 pregab 2 times a day helped me a great deal. I have tried many times to come off opiates over 20 years in fact, never much success. But was able to come off completely with pregab just be warned, if taken for to long they are also addictive. ## Pregabapentin are stronger than gabapentin, and i meant 600mgs pregab, you can also use gabapentin it just depends how much opoid you are on, mine was a bad addiction. ## Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that is also used to help treat certain types of nerve pain. ref: Medline Plus Gabapentin It may help with some withdrawal symptoms, but it is a prescription only medication, so you wou...

Can you take a 300mg dose of gabapentin with a piece of a suboxone strip (about 2mgs)? I wanted to know before I mixed both. ## Hello, Jen! How are you? I didn't find any problems or interactions listed between these two medications, so that should fine, as long as your doctor approves and it's always best to double check such information to be sure. The FDA classifies Suboxone as an opiate that is most commonly used to treat drug addiction, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Gabapentin may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and weight gain. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I was prescribed gabapentin and suboxone together by my dr. I ended up s...

I have tapered off 100mcg plus 100 mg Kapanol plus Ordine. I got down to about 7mg morphine a day but the pain got so bad I had to go back on 20 mg Kapanol / day. Does any one know of an alternative way of relieving pain without opiates and drugs please? I have started investigating neuroplasticity and pain and have asked my GP about intrathecal pumps which deliver pain medication directly into the damaged area of the spine. If I keep using Kapanol my tolerance will increase rapidly and I will finish up in the same mess as I used to be due to addiction and CNS changes ## Have you considered trying other medications that aren't so habit forming? There are several available, including Gabapentin and Pregabalin, both are anticonvulsants that have been shown to help with certain types o...

Why do you think docs prescribe Suboxone or Methadone for opiate withdrawal, make patients stay on it until they are completely addicted to it for years, then have to treat them to come off it? Why don't they treat a 5 day opiate withdrawal with a benzo to sleep, clonidine, gabapentin, trazodone for a week or two instead. It would sure help society not be addicted to Suboxone. Worst drug ever. ## Most people, even if they are addicted, can't just take a ton of medications to try and sleep through their withdrawals and be out of work for that length of time. Treatment with Suboxone or Methadone enables them to still work and be productive, while undergoing addiction treatment and, unlike Methadone, Suboxone usually enables most people to eventually become completely drug free, al...

Here's a link with a comprehensive list of withdrawal symptoms which you can have from Neurotin. The symptoms are from Benzodiazepine (Librium and Valium) withdrawal which is similar to Neurontin. Go down to Withdrawal Symptoms. ## As an observer of someone of someone withdrawing from Gabapentin, all I can say is that I've never seen such behavioral changes in people with Benzo addiction and withdrawal as I have in people taking Gabapentin. This may not be true for people taking a low (100 mg 2x daily) dosage that remains constant over a period of years, but it certainly is for a person who begins on a low dosage which is quickly raised over a period of a year to a rather high (800 mg 3x daily) dosage and then asked to begin titration by a new Pain Management Specialist. The per...

I have been on methadone for about 6 years and had to start going to a maintenance clinic a few yrs ago after my pain dr lost his license here in Phoenix, Arizona. I tried going to another pain clinic after mine closed but they wanted me off the methadone and forced me to taper off of it in one week and demanded I took gabapentin which DOES NOT work and they didn't care. Anyways, I went to mmt clinic and have been there since but there are so many things wrong with it, I'd end up writing a book. Does anyone know of a pain Mgmt doc who writes methadone scripts in Metro Phoenix area? ## Unfortunately, since you've been going to the clinic, it isn't likely that you'll find a doctor that will take you on. For addiction/maintenance, the current laws will only allow it to ...

I've been on methadone for a year my dose was at 110mg. I went to the clinic Monday morning and took my last 110mg dose.I have zubsolv which is equivalent to suboxone so my question is how long do I wait to take it? It's now Thursday at 630pm and I've been taking gabapentin which takes the edge off but I stI'll feel like death! Please help IDK how much longer I can do this.... ## Hello, Duda! How are you? I'm sorry that you're so miserable. You have to be in full withdrawal, before taking the Zubsolv, or it may throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise. The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate that is most commonly used to treat drug addiction, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may caus...

How can I convince my Dr. I need Valium or anti anxiety along with my suboxone been on for 4 years. He is reluctant to prescribe klonipin for any length of time. I'm going to ask for Valium this time. I really do need something. I got divorced after 28 years and have lost 4 siblings in 4 years Without anxiety meds I won't hardly leave my house. I get so overwhelmed with anxiety I do anything ## Your suboxone doc is reluctant because suboxone and valium (which is a benzodiazepine) are both respiratory depressants. You could quit breathing. I've been on them both together and have never had a problem, but Doctors have to cover their own arse and that is the clinical finding as of now. Good luck ## Are you on Sub's for Addiction? That would explain it. Try Gabapentin it wor...
