B vitamins are a class of water-soluble vitamins that play important roles in cell metabolism and synthesis of red blood cells.[1] Though these vitamins share similar names (B1, B2, B3, etc.), they are chemically distinct compounds that often coexist in the same foods.[1] In general, dietary supplements containing all eight are referred to as a vitamin B complex. Individual B vitamin supplements are referred to by the specific number or name of each vitamin, su...

Proxeed Levocarnitine

Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound involved in metabolism in most mammals, plants, and some bacteria.[1][2][3][4] In support of energy metabolism, carnitine transports long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria to be oxidized for energy production, and also participates in removing products of metabolism from cells.[3] Given its key metabolic roles, carnitine is concentrated in tissues like skeletal and car...

Dopamine Drug Index

Dopamine (DA, a contraction of 3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine) is a neuromodulatory molecule that plays several important roles in cells. It is an organic chemical of the catecholamine and phenethylamine families. Dopamine constitutes about 80% of the catecholamine content in the brain. It is an amine synthesized by removing a carboxyl group from a molecule of its precursor chemical, L-DOPA, which is synthesized in the brain and kidneys. Dopamine is also synthesized in plants and most animals. I...

How did this drug, with its horrible side effects and minimal efficacy (6 weeks survival vs placebo), ever get approved? How is its efficacy determined? What are the oncologist's responsibilities for managing side effects? ## @Rocky, With all the side effects, deaths, and money spent on the war against drugs, I have to wonder how almost every medication on the market has ever been approved. Regarding your last question, I think the link below may help shed some light on the roles and responsibilities associated with each type of Oncologist: cancer.net/all-about-cancer/newly-diagnosed/find-oncologist/types-oncologists However, I get the sense that their responsibility in managing each patient's side effects would just entail changing medications or dosages to better suit individu...

This question is about the effect of peroxynitrite on cell death. Increasing PN production, decreases NO production (NO is scavenged in the process of creating ONOO-). However, the concern/thing that we didn’t understand was why PN doesn’t instantly kill cells since it’s a more potent radical. Sure, you decrease NO, so maybe you get less death that way, but you’re replacing it with something that seems like it would be even worse. So, why do you at least initially get less cell death? ## Interesting observation here. Perhaps the naturally occuring presence and activities of antioxidant enzymes and their roles in PN-induced cell death (both apoptotic and necrotic), is a major determining factor of its cardiotoxic...

fat blocker ## From what I can gather, Cr-Pico is an abbreviation for "Chromium Picolinate". Chromium picolinate is a form of Chromium marketed for use in improving nutrient metabolism and to promote weight loss. However, I have not read any information about it being a "fat blocker" per say. According to NIH.gov, Chromium is known to enhance the action of insulin, a hormone critical to the metabolism and storage of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in the body. Chromium also appears to be directly involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism, but more research is needed to determine the full range of its roles in the body. You can also visit the link below for more specific details about the use of Chromium as a dietary supplement: ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Chromi...

non steroid arthritis medicine in India ## Etoshine contains the active ingredient Etoricoxib. This is a type of medicine known as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs work by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in producing prostaglandins, in response to injury or certain diseases. These prostaglandins cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Because NSAIDs block the production of these prostaglandins, they are effective at relieving pain and inflammation. Cyclo-oxygenase does not only produce prostaglandins that cause inflammation. It also produces prostaglandins that have useful roles in the body. There are two different forms of cyclo-oxygenase, COX-1 and COX-2. COX-2 is the form that (among other things)...
