My Dr. prescribed 4 tablets of 10 mg for 5 days and then 1 tablet for 30 days. I do have premature heart beat and after my first dosage (yesterday at noon) my heart feels fluttery. He is treating Occipital Neuralgia pain. After doing research of possible side effects I'm considering discontinuing the use of this drug.. Would it be harmful to stop without tapering? ## You should follow your doctor's instructions for tapering. This medication is known to cause palpitations, as a side effect, according to FDA reports, it may also cause nausea, headache, fluid retention, acne, and weight changes. Stopping without tapering could result in adrenal fatigue, so you do have to be very careful, since that could cause some serious medical issues. Are you on any other medications? Did he of...

Need help with tablet count for prescription. I'm a student and I have to calculate the number of tablets needed to fill the rx. Prescription reads Prednisone 10MG # QS. The SIG is: 30mg bid x 2d 25mg bid x 2d 20mg bid x 2d 15mg bid x 2d 10mg qd x 2d 5mg qd x 2d (then stop) I also need help with writing the patient label based on this rx ... Thank you. Alan ## Hi Alan, I'm not quite familiar with your method for calculating the number of pills. Is there a type of formula you are following to get where you are? It's definitely something that one would consider to be as simple as putting the right number of pills into the right container, but I can see that it is much more than just that. Below are a couple of sites that I thought could be of help to you when calculating or co...

I take three 10mg physeptone daily for chronic pain caused by lupus and fibromyalgia. Recently developed a virus which caused painful inflammation when dry coughing and extra pain throughout my body. I also did not realize I had a temp above 38c. My doctor prescribed 25mg prednisone for a week. Just in two days of taking prednisone I haven’t needed to take physeptone (I can’t take morphine based drugs). Prednisone has worked like a miracle in reducing pain. I realise lupus is an autoimmune disease and prednisone an immunosupressant. I’ve always balked against taking steroid based drugs because of the side effects but I can’t believe how well it works. Perhaps I should be taking prednisone as physeptone doesn’t kill the pain totally. ## Ultimately, you can r...

Can you taper prednisolone.. 30mg/day for a week by 10mg/day each week after without side effects or is it best to go from 30 to 20 to 10 to 5mg? ## Hello, Jacko! How are you? How has your doctor directed you to taper it? Sometimes, if you've been taking it for less than 3 weeks, tapering isn't necessary. Usually, however, when it is tapered, it is done by 10mg increments, but not for a week each, in most cases, it's usually just a couple of days. But you need to follow your doctor's instructions, they are the final decider as to what is safest for you. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this steroid as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness, insomnia, weight gain, fluid retention and acne.

Hi I am freaking out. I am on 30 mg per day of prednisone. I take it in the morning around 7 am but accidentally took it again at 6 pm. I tried to vomit it up immediately but do not believe it worked as no pill showed up. What should I do as I took 60 mg today and now not sure how this will effect me as well as what to do tomorrow. ## Hello, Kell! How are you doing? Did you experience any adverse reactions? It can be given in that dosage, so taking that amount isn't usually a serious problem, unless you have a bad reaction to it or are allergic to it. Did you contact your doctor about the issue?

I went down from 30mg of prednisone to 20mg for a month. My doctor is tapering off the prednisone by 10mg each month. When will I be back to normal? ## Most likely, a few weeks after you have finally completely stopped taking it. The typical side effects, according to the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, irritability, nervousness, and insomnia. How are you feeling, now? Why were you taking it for so long? Are you on any other medications?

My prescription states: "Take 1 tablet by mouth once daily in the morning as needed." Does this mean that I take it (I have 30 tablets) until the pain/stiffness subsides and then quit? ## Hello, LeTigre! How are you? Yes, that is what that directive would mean. It is sometimes prescribed that way, for instance my mother-in-law takes it in a similar way for her allergies/asthma, after years of dealing with it, she knows that it usually only takes 5 days of taking it to knock her symptoms out. However, if you're unsure, consult your prescriber or pharmacist. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness, insomnia and acne. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you, Verwon. I anticipated that reply, so it gives ...

Is there a non-script replacement for Prednisone. This may sound really dumb, but we have a dog with big time allergies and the only thing that will help him is Prednisone. Problem is that the Vet wants to run $200 - $300 worth of blood test every month before they will renew the script. Needless to say, we really can't afford this. The dog is 14 years old and nothing else helps with the allergies. ## Prednisone is a corticosteroid and as such is available by prescription only, as are all the alternatives.

I have a terrible rash on my neck, chest and spreading to my breasts. I am on 20 mg. of prednisone (reduced from 30 mg) and have been for almost a month. Could this rash be from the prednisone?? ## Hi Georgia sanders, Based on my research, "rash" is listed as one of the rare side effects of Prednisone. I recommend speaking with your doctor about this if possible, just so the symptoms don't get any worse. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Prednisone Details I hope this helps! ## Is there any risk of side effects if a child only took 20 milligrams of prednisone for one day, then totally stopped?

So I'd say that's probably your best option. ## In this case, I have to agree with Mason, usually if you are taking a high dose for 21 days, or more, you do h...

I was prescribed a 40 mg dosepak and tapered over the course of 7 days for dermatitis. At day 5 it was clear that the dosage was too low and it was failing. I was then prescribed a 60 mg tapering dose that was 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 10. On day 5 I had a violent gastric reaction to the dose so I discontinued at that point leaving the last two 10, 10 doses. About 36 hours later I started to express symptoms of prednisolone withdrawal, which makes sense as it takes about that long for it to purge from a body. Symptoms were right down the check list. Severe drowsiness, aches, pains, mild fever, rash on forearms, acne forming on my back. Did some research but could find little guidance on how to proceed for reactions to short term dose withdrawal. Should I just ride it out? Some seemed to s...

I started on prednisone for extreme knee and hip pain. Can't sleep. No relief yet. Can I take hydrocodone? I took Tylenol several hours ago with no relief from that either. ## I was put on Celebrex, 200 mg, for severe hip pain and arthritis. Can't mix Advil (only Tylenol) which does nothing for me. Tried cutting a 5/300 Vicodin in half and that sure helped take the edge off. Am going to discuss further with my neuromuscularskeletal doctor. Trying to avoid an epidural shot and surgery. I have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and scoliosis, along with arthritis. ## Thank You very much for sharing your challenge with me. It definitely helped me. I decided to break one of the 7.50 hydrocodones in half (i know naproxen is a no-np). I took half and within 10 minutes I felt NO pain....

I'm a generally healthy male of 58. Had heavy bronchitic asthma all my life. Till 30th year I regularly had tapered courses of prednisone. After that it went so well that I, except once in the few years, can life my life well with just spiriva and seretide. But then again I feel I live up to, say, 75 % of my optimum this way. Since a few months I add, on a weekly basis, one day 20 mg, next 10 mg, next 5 mg prednisone and I'm near the 100% that way. Would this use be considered a form of long time use, with the well known dangers of (creeping) side-effects (I don't notice any, actually) or as such a low dose/such a mild regiment that there's no harm to be expected? Thanks for any reaction! ## Hello, Turing! How are you? Yes, even at a low dose that's used occasionally...
