hi ive been on a norspan patch (15mg) for some months. methadone tablets before that for some yrs post lower back fusion, S1-L5 in 2003. the norspan patch has not covered the pain control so my specialist ordered an MRI and now I have a protruding disc at L4. this was to be expected I was told due to the extra workload on my lower back. I have been given the fentanyl patch and told that it will be increasing next visit but I was not told to just stop the norspan or ween off slowly? Due to constant itching on the norspan Im coming off at 5mg/week anyway but not sure if now I should just take patch off and be done with it? I do not want to if possible go thru to many withdrawal symptoms? Thanks for any answers ## I am in a similar situation. Have been taking norspan 20mg for over 12 month...

I've been on Fentanyl 25mcg every 48 hours for 3 1/2 years and want taper off. I'm finding it hard to stretch them to 72 hours, only made it to 60 hours. Also take 4-5 Norco 10/325. I'm wondering if it's possible to trim my Mylan patches to 2/3-3/4 in size to start tapering. I'm thinking of asking my pain management Dr to reduce dose to 12.5 at next appt in 2 weeks but want to start tapering ASAP. ## Hello, John! How are you? No, it is not safe to cut the patches to try and do that. That could actually cause you to absorb too much of the narcotic, at once, which could cause an overdose, since this is a very potent narcotic. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry ...

Will the sleepiness go away after I have been on the fentanyl for a few months? ## I just started the 25mcg patches w Norco 5-325 for bt pain. He upped me to 50 mcg and I can hardly stay awake on day 2. I can barely function. Will I get used to it or do I need to back down to 25. The pain level is great w the 50, tolerable w 25 but much more comfortable with 50 but I can't function, I have to work. I started on the 50 patches on Jan 5th. Any experiences would be appreciated, never taken any narcotics before this. ## Hello, Claudia and Bev! How are you both? Yes, side effects are usually transient and tend to improve, as your body gets used to the medication. The FDA lists this as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause other side effects...

I have been on Norco and now Fentanyl patches 62mg for over five years now because of chronic lower back pain. My husband sat me down last week and said he can't deal with my mood swings anymore and wants me off meds. I am willing to do it to save our marriage and an really scared of the withdrawal. If I don't take the Norco for over three days my arms and legs get so .. I don't know how to explain it. I have to move them. If I take the Norco and a muscle relaxer (or two) I'm fine. So that's all in my head now. Skip to present, my Dr. is putting me on a taper with MS Contin, 60mg/4x/day for three days, going to 60mg/3x & 30/1x for another three, decreasing the dosage every three days if my body can handle it. Took one 60mg this morning and felt relaxed, but shaky...

Do I put patch on and continue to take my norco till the fentanyl patch gets in to my system at full strength? I take two nor ps 10-325 every 6 hrs and they wear off at 4-5 hrs so pain comes on strong. I've read that it takes 12 to 24 hours for fentanyl to reach its peak so till it kicks it will I be safe to take reg dose of norco? Do not want to go to sleep and not wake up! Scary ## It would be best to be cautious and check with your doctor, before taking the Norco with the patch, since there can be some risk of increased sedation or overdose. However, in most cases it is prescribe that way, the time released patch is meant to control most of your pain, then a regular release medication is prescribed for breakthrough pain. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic,...

I am a chronic pain patient and I have slowly got off hydrocodone 10mg-325 acetaminophen and acetaminophen#4 due to stomach issues. I also take other meds cyclobenzaprine diazepam, nortriptyline . I was prescribed the 25mg patch. after reading info with meds it states DO NOT TAKE IF NOT ALREADY USING OPIOID PAIN MED. I am scared to death to try this med. Because I have not used pain meds continually in the last 6 months. Is this safe to start? ## Fentanyl is a very strong opiate narcotic, it is over 80 times stronger than Morphine. Learn more Fentanyl details here. The main issue I see with it, apart from it being so strong, is that it really leaves you nowhere else to go in the future. Generally, it should be the last resort medication, after other options have been exhausted, since th...

I've been on Fentanyl patches for 5 years and was on 125mcg, new Pain Consultant wanted me to cut back to 112mcg which I have done, been getting normal withdrawal, nausea, restlessness, headaches, joint pain, increased pain for which I'm taking 40mg in 2ml Oramorph, but have also got chest pain, especially if I bend or stretch or stand up, is this normal or should I see my doctor? ## Hello, Karen! How are you feeling? Any chest pain should be checked out by a doctor immediately, there is always a chance that it's something dangerous, so better safe than sorry, where that is concerned. However, from what you're describing with it happening when you bend, stretch or stand up, it may be costochondritis, which is an inflammation that occurs where the ribs connect to the ster...

Is this normal to feel like death ## Hi J, Sorry to hear about your experience with Fentanyl. While I don't think it's common to feel this way, Fentanyl is regarded as a very powerful medication. So it could be that your body just isn't used to having something so potent in its system. Also, from what I've read in other discussion threads, the side effects of this medication can and often do take their toll on the body, in a way that may make some people feel "lifeless", weak, or very ill. My suggestion is, if you don't like how your body is responding to it, then you should probably consider other forms of pain management. Perhaps something natural that can be used as an adjunctive therapy, alongside something weaker than Fentanyl (that you can more easily t...

Iwas put on Methodone 5-6 years ago for chronic back pain and fibromyalgia. My ankles starting swelling so my Dr. put me on a fentanyl patch. with Norco for breakthrough. I have ben doing pretty well. A few months ago I decided to get off the drugs. I have been on 25mcg patch for a couple of months, and the other day deciced it was time to quit.My Dr. knows what my plan is. Anyway it's been a pretty miserable couple of days. The second night I put on a patch for a few hours to sleep. So sincde yesterday I have been a real TWEEKER-restless body, flipping all over the place, can't eat, can't sleep, achy. Right or wrong I am rationing the Norco I have left atlernating with tylenol, and taking klonipin. It sucks. I am so glad that I am not alone, while at least I can read what o...

Please let me know the gel brands for fent 25 patches. I always used PAR and now I guess they are obsolete. I'm in northern virginia and I hate the foil backed ones as they are like gum when they get wet and then a ball of gook. I could handle the little tiny ones that are non gel but I they too aren't very sticky once they get wet. The gel ones, I can take off when I shower and stick them back on their plastic and re-stick. I wear them on my hip wear my underwear elastic is and worse case scenerio, I put a bandaid over it if the sticky isn't very sticky. Thank you for any names of gel 25's that I can ask my pharmacy to order without sounding like I'm desperate lol ## Two pharmacies near Woodbridge VA, attempted to order the PAR brand and came back to say they couldn...

I take 50mcg/h patches I was amazed out how well they worked (Cancer) I have been on Fentanyl for 5 months the first patches hardly worked from a generic company Sadoz. It felt like I was just putting a piece of scotch tape on myself I told my Dr and he explained some story about the drug companies are removing the gel and made this new format (so i have to suffer because he said people were able to get the gel out of the patches?. I filled my last 2 prescriptions at walgreens and they had your brand I was out of pain within a half hour -Are you switching to these flat patches? and if so PLEASE help me find a company that will still carry them !!! ## this site does not manufacture, nor sell any medications, this is an information only website, therefore this site is not switching anythin...

hi i have been on these patches for 4 months now but i still have pain ## Have you consulted your doctor? Do you have any medications for breakthrough pain? Usually, for proper pain management, something long acting like the Fentanyl is used and then some that works immediately, or a regular release medication, is also given for those times the pain is too much for the long acting medication to completely control. ## I am on 25mcgs of fentynal patches every 72 hours, plus 10/325 pecocet 1 every 4-6 hours for BT pain. The Percocet doesn't do much, and is very similar to my previous prescription of Norco and the patch isn't strong enough and runs out after 48 hours. I have been on Fentanyl for pain of cancer treatment side effects & have been reducing from 400mc & down to 25 mc without any side effects. After 48 hours of last dose I have been having involuntary leg movements, first on left for 12 hours. Had a little relief and upon eating and taking normal medication, I began vomiting and got involuntary leg movements on right side. Are these withdrawal symptoms? Do I need to go in to a doctor? I have no small dose of Fentanyl left to take. Only 100 mcg doses. ## Have you consulted your doctor, yet? Those can be withdrawal symptoms, but it is always best to check with your doctor to be sure. In addition, they may be able to advise you on how to alleviate them, until the medication has fully processed out of your body. ## these are almost de...

Hi all, I was on 50mg patch and lots of tablets. I have Behçet's disease so the patch helps a lot. But I'm fed up being like I'm on another planet some days so I spoke to my doctor and he said to lower it to a 25mg patch. This is my 3rd day. The first couple days I was very sleepy but now my whole body is aching and I can't relax. My body keeps shaking, I can't sit still and it's now 2.30 am and I'm wide awake. Is there anything else I can do to help? Many thanks. ## Hello, Chris! How are you? That was a pretty big dosage change, so such withdrawal effects are normal, as listed by the U.S. FDA, you may also experience rebound pain, fever, chills and diarrhea. Has there been any change? A slower taper would likely be better. ## What other medications are ...

All I need to know is how many norco 5's equal one 25mg fentanyl patch? I usually use fentanyl patches for my severe sciatica pain but I ran out and missed my regularly scheduled appt due to my husband having surgery. I do have a new appt but not for a week and I have norco 5's of mine I can take til then but I need to know how many will be close to the pain control I get from the patch. ## The Fentanyl is much, much stronger, so you aren't actually going to be able to take an equivalent dose of the Norco, especially since it also contains Acetaminophen. Taking too much of it in a day can be fatally toxic. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Ha...

Hi. I'm hoping someone with experience dealing with pharmacies can help me understand something. Last month I was in the process of waiting on a Prior Authorization for my insurance for Fentanyl patches, and since I was due to fill my prescription I was dispensed 1 box of patches to pay cash for while waiting for coverage approval. Normally I get 4 boxes to last the month, and when I asked about what would happen when the PA was approved I was informed that the pharmacy couldn't dispense more than 4 boxes per month. Fair enough, I didn't want anything extra or early, I just wanted to know if we would be able to get the insurance coverage aligned with the next dispensing so I wouldn't have to continue paying for 1 box into the future. I paid for the 1 box on July 23rd, an...

Being weaned off of fentanyl. Just need to talk to others about it. I've dropped down from 100 to 75 it's been a month. Sometimes I have no appetite for days at a time. Now my whole body is aching really bad. I was put on this after I had sugery on my cervical spine and after I found out later that my back was just as bad and I couldn't stand the pain. They started me on a low dose and increased until I was doing ok. I just want to mentally feel good again. ## I am so sorry about what you're going through. Everything you've described are normal withdrawal effects, though. You will likely experience them for awhile each time you lower the dose. How fast are you tapering? ## My Dr says it will be a long process :(. I've been on the 75mcg for a month and a half. The...

I take the mallinckordt 100mch fentanyl patch and I was wondering if there is enough fentanyl left over after I have worn the patch for 3 days to still use it? ## Hi clay, According to the prescribing information, Fentanyl patches are only intended to last 72 hours (3 days) before they should be replaced. Nih.gov also recommends changing it at about the "same time of day", every time you do change it. Given the above information, it's probably safe to assume that there's very little, if any left after 72 hours of use. And if there is any left, I would doubt that the remaining dosage would be enough to provide sufficient relief. That part is just an opinion though, as I personally have not taken Fentanyl in order to know for certain, nor do I know what your level of toler...
