My son has a horrible cough for days now following an up and down temp. I have a few 500mg of Amoxicillin capsules from my recent dental root canal fun times. Is it alright for me to break the capsule and put a small dosage into his juice/food? Hi my son is 6 years old and has pink eye. I took him to urgent care because I couldn't get into his normal pediatrician before they closed for the day. He has also been having pain behind one of his ears/kind of on his jaw line. I told the doctor this and he checked his ears saying he did not have an ear infection but that he believes it could be mastoiditis. This concerns me but the doc acted like it isn't a big deal. I just wanted to add that my doctor also said you can not take all medicines out of their capsules as it can be very dangerous to do this with certain drugs but I was fine doing this with amoxicillin. My dentist proscribed me amoxicillin for my gums. He proscribed 250g three times a day. I have been taking it twice a day for several days. How much amoxicillin is safe for a 5 year old at 38 lbs? ## Hi indi, According to the MayoClinic, (if you're intending on using amoxicillin for a typical bacterial infection), the dose for children older than 3 months of age, weighing less than 88lbs is based on body weight and "must be determined by your doctor". However, they go on to note that the "usual" dose is anywhere from 20 to 45mg per 2.2lbs of body weight (per day); to be divided and administered every 8 to 12 hours. You could try to do the math on that in order to get a rough estimate - But ideally, like they said, you should discuss these details with your doctor just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps!

My 6mo old has been getting pneumonia almost since birth. I give him his dose religiously and as soon as the tenth day is up, HE HAS IT AGAIN WITHIN A FEW DAYS. Every time I bring him to the Dr they do X-rays and I'm really tired of doing the same thing over every other week and it's only effective when he's actually taking the meds. My question is if the antibiotic says to discard after ten days and it's three days after the discard date is it still ok to give it to him. I just need to know do you have to take the Amoxicillin before getting your tooth pulled ## Hello, Synethia! How are you? Why are you afraid of it, it's just an antibiotic? And it depends on your health, there are some medical conditions that require you to take it, before dental work, to prevent possible infection. And if the tooth is already infected and hurting, you my need to take it for a few days, because if you don't, then they will not be able to properly numb the area to extract the tooth. I've had that happen and I can assure you that it is pain you don't want to feel.

What antibiotic has a shelf life of 10 years? ## I don't know of any that have that long of a shelf life and I can't find one listed. It generally varies by drug, so there may be one, however. As to Amoxicillin, it has a shelf life of 2 years, from the date of production and your pharmacist has to give it to you with a minimum of one year left on the expiration date, until it starts to lose potency, except when it is a liquid preparation, which have a 7 to 10 day lifespan.
