My son has a horrible cough for days now following an up and down temp. I have a few 500mg of Amoxicillin capsules from my recent dental root canal fun times. Is it alright for me to break the capsule and put a small dosage into his juice/food? He gets bad anxiety at the doctors office I'd like to spare him the upset if it's something I can take care of at home. ## Hello, Ally! How is your son doing? No, that's never a good idea. He may not have an infection, if he does this may not be the appropriate antibiotic to treat it, you could end up giving him too much or too little.. there are just too many risks involved. It would be best to see his doctor for a proper diagnosis and prescription, if necessary. The FDA classifies this medication as being an antibiotic and it's ...

Hi my son is 6 years old and has pink eye. I took him to urgent care because I couldn't get into his normal pediatrician before they closed for the day. He has also been having pain behind one of his ears/kind of on his jaw line. I told the doctor this and he checked his ears saying he did not have an ear infection but that he believes it could be mastoiditis. This concerns me but the doc acted like it isn't a big deal. He prescribed eye drops for pink eye and amoxicillin 250mg/5ml suspect 100ml and told me to give him 17.5ml 2x a day. He only weighs 46 pounds. I feel like this is way too much for his age and weight. Is this amount too much or is it normal for his diagnosis? Please help! ## You should give him the dosage the doctor has prescribed. Antibiotics are usually dosed a...

What is the recommend Amoxicillin dosage for a 6 yr old who is 46 lbs? My son is 6 yrs old and has a bad ear infection in one ear. Doctor gave him 500 mg of Amoxicillin 2 times/day, 2 teaspoon (10mg). He weighs 46 lbs. I just think it seems like a lot for his age. Please let me know if it's ok? Thank you! ## Hi Inna, According to an article I found on the site for Livestrong, kids between the ages of 2 months and 6 years old are usually given 80 to 90 mgs of amoxicillin per kilogram of body weight per day. This is supposed to be divided up into two or three doses and is generally prescribed for about 10 days. Every child may react differently though...so unfortunately I can't say for sure whether this dosing schedule is right for your son. That question seems like it'll be b...

I have a two year old prescription of amoxicillin from the dentist that I barely even touched. Now I'm showing syptoms of an UTI because I never drink any water. Would it be safe to take now? ## Hello Mike! How are you feeling? The first step to take would be to start drinking some water regularly. It is actually a misconception that you need to drink 8 8ounce glasses a day. That is the total amount of fluid your body needs for the day, but you do get a lot of it from your food and other beverages, so even adding just a glass or two of water can help. It is especially important for flushing out your kidneys, if you continue to avoid water, you may find yourself in kidney failure eventually. As to the Amoxicillin, medications lose effectiveness over time, so it will most likely not b...

I just wanted to add that my doctor also said you can not take all medicines out of their capsules as it can be very dangerous to do this with certain drugs but I was fine doing this with amoxicillin. Always check with your doctor or pharmacy beforehand. I would imagine you could transfer into a veggie capsule. ## Hello, Sharon! How are you? Yes, you are correct and so were your doctors, but to clarify for anyone curious, the difference lies between whether or not a medication is time released. If it is, then opening the capsules, or crushing the tablets could defeat the time release and may result in your getting too much medication at once, which could result in an overdose. And some medications, such as high potency potassium supplements can be very, very harsh on the stomach, so the...

Thanks ## I have cephalexin 500mg it was filled 2-2014 are they still good ## This is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat various types of bacterial infections. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. In general, the U.S. FDA lists most medications being good for one year, from the time they are removed from the original packaging, and are dispensed to you. Past a year, they may begin to lose efficacy. Thus, it would be best to dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription, if you need an antibiotic. Are there any ot...

I had a sinus infection a few months ago and my doctor prescribed amoxicillin. Today I noticed the signs of a cold sore coming. Could I take the rest of my amoxicillin to get rid of it? ## Unfortunately, cold sores are caused by a virus, so an antibiotic will not help treat or prevent them. However, you could ask your doctor about taking Acyclovir, which is approved by the FDA to help prevent them. Its typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and stomach pain. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hi, I'm getting lipliner tattoo and would like to know if I take Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium 875mg will prevent me from getting cold sores? My dentist proscribed me amoxicillin for my gums. He proscribed 250g three times a day. I have been taking it twice a day for several days. Any serious complications from this? ## Under dosing an already low dose may not be the best idea, unless you're using other natural alternatives as an adjunct therapy. Reason being is that if you don't kill the infection, it can become more resistant and harder to kill the next time around. So you may want to continue taking it as prescribed if this is a concern to you. How long has your doctor prescribed it to you for? Most antibiotics like this are generally prescribed for up to 7-10 days, depending on the type & severity of the infection. A 250mg dose indicates that your infection may not be very serious, otherwise they probably woul...

My almost 10 month old was on amoxicillin for 6 days and began to develop an allergic reaction - bad diarrhea and a red rash on her cheeks; I stopped giving it to her-her last dose was 2 days ago and she still has the diarrhea and rash-how long before it goes away? My doctor prescribed her a different antibiotic but we have not started it yet, I'm almost afraid to. ## talk to your doctor about it and really talk about, make him explain the new drug to you before you use it. ## Yes, definitely speak to your doctor, he should make sure from now on to prescribe a totally different class of antibiotic to prevent that from happening to your daughter again. If you aren't sure, ask the pharmacist when you go in to get the scrip filled. Tell then she is allergic to it, then if your doc ...

My daughter was given amoxicillin 250mg/5ml by her doctor for little ear and throat infection. On the second day after taking this medicine, my daughter started losing her voice. Now her voice barely comes out when she tries to talk or when she cries. Also she started getting cough specially while sleeping. I want to know is this another side effect of tis medicine and I stop giving her this medicine? If not, what is the correct dose i Should give her? She is 13 months old and 19 lbs. ## Actually, if she had a throat infection, then those symptoms are most likely from that and not from the antibiotic. The side effects from the antibiotic can include things like diarrhea, nausea and non-allergic skin rash. Learn more Amoxicillin details here. And the dose is based on her weight, so that...

How much amoxicillin is safe for a 5 year old at 38 lbs? ## Hi indi, According to the MayoClinic, (if you're intending on using amoxicillin for a typical bacterial infection), the dose for children older than 3 months of age, weighing less than 88lbs is based on body weight and "must be determined by your doctor". However, they go on to note that the "usual" dose is anywhere from 20 to 45mg per 2.2lbs of body weight (per day); to be divided and administered every 8 to 12 hours. You could try to do the math on that in order to get a rough estimate - But ideally, like they said, you should discuss these details with your doctor just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps!

My 6mo old has been getting pneumonia almost since birth. I give him his dose religiously and as soon as the tenth day is up, HE HAS IT AGAIN WITHIN A FEW DAYS. Every time I bring him to the Dr they do X-rays and I'm really tired of doing the same thing over every other week and it's only effective when he's actually taking the meds. My question is if the antibiotic says to discard after ten days and it's three days after the discard date is it still ok to give it to him. I have four children so please don't respond with a common sense answer like dress him better, if I put anymore clothes and hats and gloves and socks he would sweat a twin no lie. I really don't understand why he keeps getting it but he too has chronic asthma, born via c-section, and he sweats w...

I just need to know do you have to take the Amoxicillin before getting your tooth pulled ## Hello, Synethia! How are you? Why are you afraid of it, it's just an antibiotic? And it depends on your health, there are some medical conditions that require you to take it, before dental work, to prevent possible infection. And if the tooth is already infected and hurting, you my need to take it for a few days, because if you don't, then they will not be able to properly numb the area to extract the tooth. I've had that happen and I can assure you that it is pain you don't want to feel.
