my son has had hepitus c for 15 years before being diagnosed. he has severs liver damaganeuropht and other problems--of this drug --also benefits-his medical doctor is trying to take him off it -cold turkey- the pain doctors prescribed it for him. help me understand. he is terminal. i wish to know more about this medication. ## I'm sorry to hear about your son. If he has been taking it for awhile he might go through a brief but very intense withdrawal period lasting up to several days. He will definitely need you to be there for him during that time. Having surgery in near future, but liver enzymes are high, should this medication be ruled out? what are my options? Should i postpone this surgery? I found this problem out after surgery was scheduled. ## Dilaudid (hydromorphone) is metabolized (broken down) by the liver, but I haven't come across any clear congruent information stating whether or not it causes liver damage or potentiates an existing condition like that which you mentioned. In general though, Dilaudid has a pretty short half-life of 2-3 hours. Half-life here means that, say, 2 hours after ingesting Dilaudid, half of the active amount will be gone. This doesn't mean that 2 hours later, though, the other half will be gone. At that point half of the remainder will be gone, then another half after the same time interval, and so on, until the drug is eliminated from the body.
