As to long-term problems, it is actually only meant for the short-term treatment of insomnia, it is not intended to be used for lengthy periods of time. It is usually only prescribed for 2 to 6 weeks. I've had insomnia for 13 years. Very sleep depraved and extreme fatigue/depression. I sometimes take 5mg of generic ambien BUT I experience HORRID NIGHTMARES! Very realistic and life threatening situations of myself and/or one of my pets! It is a terrible feeling but I do get 6+hours of sleep. I have been taking this medication for 6 years. If it just supposed to used short terms why do the doctor keep giving it to you. ## Did you try any others? Is this the only one that worked for you? Doctors don't have to follow the dosing and usage recommendations, they can prescribe according to their ow experience. However, it would be best not to stop it abruptly after taking it for such a long period of time, it would be best to taper it. Are there any other questions or concerns?

Since I have been taking Ambien 10 mg. every night for sleep. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, sleep actions, hallucinations, and next day hangover-like effects. Ambien is not a Benzo, it's a Barbiturate I believe ## To clear this up for everyone that might need to, the FDA actually classifies Ambien/Zolpidem as a sedative/hypnotic. Duane Reade filled ambien and xanax with my insuranse then called two days later to tell me to pick up my ambien script. They filled same rx# twice and went through insurance. How could this happen?
