I have been prescribed to take 20 mg prednisone a day but haven't started taking it yet because of the scary side effects. I was given Amox/K Clav 875-125MG, 1 Tab 2X day for 10 days. Also Prednisone 20mg (Deltasone) for a very bad cold that has chronically recurred for a couple weeks each time, with just about a week being clear after each recurrence. I have severe coughing, headache, an enormous amount of nasal/throat mucus (like burnt vanilla pudding, and bloody) with facial, neck and lower abdomen, lower chest and lower back pain. All that is unusual for me. The astonishing number of disclaimers and side effects is shocking and frightening; so I have the prescription sitting on my nightstand, unused after filling it today. I had a allergic reaction to some makeup or cream and had very swollen and red eyelids/skin. Was prescribed 8 pills of 20 mg prednisone to take 2x/day for 4 days. I look so much better after taking the 3 pills, can I just stop now or is it like an anibotic and I need to finish the course of the pills? I started predizone 20 mg yesterday. Took 3 tabs in the early a m . Directions say 3 tabs for 3 days, then 2 tabs for 4 days ,then 1 tab for 4 days. It's coming to the end of my 3rd day without prednisone.I was only suppose to take 40mg for 5 days. However I don't metabolize medicines well & the side effects were way too rough on me. About every 6 to 8 weeks I go on a 16 day decreasing round of Prednisone starting w 40mg x 4 days, 30mg x 4 days, 20mg x 4 days, and 10mg x4 days. I have been doing this for 2 years. The results of the medicine are wonderful. I am 72, and actually have flashes of my youth from the drug. Near the end of the 6 to 8 weeks without the Prednisone I am quite miserable. I am interested in knowing the risks of decreasing to the 20mg level and just staying on long term for 6 months. ## The NIH lists the long-term risks of steroid usage as possibly including weight gain, moon face, fluid retention, congestive heart failure and immune suppression.
