I have copd and have developed bronchitis over the last week or so. I am allergic to penicillin. My doctor believes the bronchitis is bacterial and has prescribed a medication that the prescription insert says "May cause serious lung problems. Tell your doctor if you develop a cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain" all of which I have with copd and bronchitis. He also prescribed 5 days of prednisone and a pro air inhaler. What would be the best antibiotic given this information. (The medication is sulfameth/trimethoprim 800160mg TB.) ## There are risks associated with all medications and that warning is usually included with most antibiotics, due to the possibility of hypersensitivity reactions, thus, I really don't know what I could suggest that might be safer for you. ...

I want to know if this has ever been linked to dementia or Alzheimer's? ## Hello, Rindy! How are you? Yes, it has, as reported by the FDA and many research studies. As a matter of fact, I'm just getting over a bad bout of bronchitis and at my doctor's appointment this past Wednesday, my doctor told me about a recent article she read that said they can actually shrink the brain and she's advising patients to avoid them, if possible. I'm not sure if there would be any way to actually prove the medication cause such an issue, because the people that usually experience it have other factors that have made them prone to developing it, anyway. My husband has been taking Cheratussin AC 10-100MG/5ML. He has not slept since he started taking it. (over 46 hours). He has bronchitis and is coughing a lot. Should he not take this. He is 73 and no sleep concerns me. ## I'm not sure what might be causing his insomnia, it could be due to the coughing itself, that can make it very hard to sleep. The medication shouldn't cause it, since one of the ingredients is Codeine, which usually causes drowsiness. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is he taking anything else? Has he gotten any sleep, yet?
