I am taking 70 mg daily methadone, have been going to clinic for 2 mths now. I have a severe sinus cold/infection and was wondering what OTC medication I can take without the risk of an adverse reaction? Ugh, just want to be able to breathe again!!! ## I had a chance to look at the UCLA Health drug interactions list between Methadone and Nyquil. Unfortunately it lists a number of interactions which would likely deem the combination unsafe. This is because of the ingredients contained inside Nyquil (Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine Succinate, Alcohol, and more). 1. Methadone w/ Doxylamine, MODERATE interaction: "Concomitant use of opioid agonists with doxylamine may cause excessive sedation and somnolence. What cold meds can you take if you're on Methadone? Are there any potential drug interactions? ## I have been on methadone for over 25 years now (213 mg) for a chronic pain condition stemming from a motorcycle accident that nearly killed me. The Above mentioned motorcycle accident accident I would take far too long to describe every single injury but I can give you the “cliff notes” that incident truly drastically changed my entire future plans/what my career aspirations were planned, however because I was in the hospital for over 4 months and (I was in the burn unit with 3rd degree burns on my entire right leg from my waist too my lower calf. Methadone is the worst drug. There are alternative ways to detox from opiates. I experienced cold turkey withdrawals after being on methadone for 12 years (90 mg. daily). Living hell. Severe withdrawals lasted two weeks, but less severe withdrawals lasted two months. Further withdrawals lasted for months. I couldn't think, walk, write... I was so miserable. If you are on Vicodin, Norco, etc., don't switch to Methadone. You have no idea what you're playing with. Trust someone who's been there (clean date: 2/1/2005) ## Hello, Caowens! How are you? I've been on methadone for 7 years now, I was at 160 mg and I am now at 60 mg and going down still. I only wish I knew the horrid side effects and other issues that came with this medication before I ever took the first dose! Detoxing is not bothering me thus far thank God but I'm going down real slow bc I want to not bc I have to or I've done anything wrong. I just wanna be clean n sober and lose the 30 pounds I gained and feel like me again. Reading everyone's posts I am terrified! I had bad RLS before I got on a MMT so I know that's gonna be horrid. I'm thankful for it in a way bc it got me out of the life I was barely living but I traded one demon for another and wish I had more knowledge before I started on this stuff! It's truly not something I would of...

Is your doctor aware that you're stopping this medication? I've been taking a high dose of Methadone for the last 5 years around 100 mg. My last dose was Sunday of Methadone, and I went to the hospital last night and they gave me 8 mg of Morphine. I was on methadone for 2 years at 60 mg. Stopped cold turkey, was in hell for 5 weeks. Please stay away from this devil. My opinion is it's the worst drug on the planet. Hi there, this is for the people who are on methadone / or Suboxone. I've been on methadone for an opiate addiction, for a year now. My clean date is feb 2, 2015. At first, methadone was the best thing that had ever happened to me. I finally felt normal, and thought I was ready to get my life back on track. Well.. What a lie that was. I was at 75 mlgs of methadone from February 2015-August 2015, then started tapering off at 5 mlgs a week. I have a rapid metabolizer, so methadone never lasted longer than 10 hours in my system. Now I'm at 30 mlgs and I'm living in hell! I'm in constant withdrawal, body aches, sweating, hot /cold, emotional, aggressive... Etc. All I want is to feel normal again, but don't want to be tied on a leash to the methadone anymore! People say t...

There are far too many for me to research them all, but if you can post back with your usual choices, I will glad check for you. I'm trying to figure out how to quit methadone cold turkey...I was laid off and now can't afford the medication......what are my options....I live in mount airy nc ## Yes, it is "Safe" to take Xanax while attempting to quit Methadone which I'm not sure is safe to do without a doctors supervision. However the withdrawal from Xanax (and remember you would need money to pay for this new Xanax as well) rivals any drug you have ever abused. I wouldn't hesitate to say the withdrawal from Xanax is even stronger than your Methadone? ## Usually for drugs like Methadone the safest way to stop taking them is to tapper off them, if possible. Do you have any Methadone left to taper with? Some medications can be taken in fractions (actually cut into pieces) and these smaller p...

Ive been battling the monster methadone for about 3 years now and I'm sick of it. I tapered down to 20mg a day and ran out. After trying elimodrol and withdrawal ease supplements and feeling OK for the first 2 days, I thought cool I will be OK. Hell no, day three my body told me that stuff ain't doing anything. I had a bottle of tramadol so I took about 250 mg and after 30 min I noticed I was sitting still and not wanting to jump out of my skin. WOW. So now I've been doing the same for 4 days and still alright. Is it too good to be true? Am I just trading one for the other or can it really help? I am sole provider of my wife and two young kids, so missing alot of work to go detox is out of the question. And cold turkey I can't handle right now. Anyone been here before?, ...

Hi, I was on Methadone for 15 years. For the past 2 years they slowly tapered me because I did not want to feel any withdrawals. They got me all the way down to 3 mg, and I stopped going. Well that was 30 days ago and I'm still going through withdrawals. They are not severe, insomnia, anxiety, diarrhea, cold chills. My question is how 2 stop it? I just want to feel normal again. ## Hi, Tamara! Sorry about the problems you're having. However, that is one very big issue with Methadone, it tends to cause withdrawals and cravings for a very long period of time, that's why most people never completely get off of it and end up requiring a lifetime maintenance dose. Thus, I'm afraid there's no way to know for sure when the symptoms you're having will stop, or if they wi...

I was on methadone for six years, it has been 19 days sent I have stopped taking my 95 mg a day. I have never felt so sick. I can not walk without it feeling so bad. I hope to be better someday. I want to know how long. ## That is a rather high dosage to stop cold turkey. Methadone is usually tapered, to try to minimize the withdrawal effects. They can be very bad, which is why many people end up on a lifetime maintenance dose and never entirely get off the drug. Some things you may experience can include: nausea, dizziness, chills and diarrhea. The withdrawals can usually last about a month, they should slowly improve as the drug is processed out of your system and your body gets used to not having it. Now I've quit H twice in my life but methadone, nothing can compare to the agony and despair that is methadone withdrawal. Let's start with acute withdrawal symptoms which lasted approximately 20 days bedridden, complete lack of sleep for 14 days, leg pain (worst part "kicking the habit") vomiting ,chills, sweats, basically every way you can suffer.Once you start to feel physically better then comes paws(po...

My husband and I were addicted to opiates for several years. We started on Methadone maintenance about a year ago and it has worked wonderfully. We are now ready to move on with our lives. We knew from the beginning that we were not going to be on Methadone for the rest of our lives. We are ready for traveling, babies, and life without methadone. My husband turned down an awesome job out of state to taper down correctly instead of quitting cold turkey, as the state the job was in had no methadone clinics. We both spoke to our counselors to discuss tapering off methadone. My counselor was very supportive, but, my husbands counselor is horrible and said that "he needs to come to the realization that some people stay on methadone for the rest of their lives". My husband explained t...

I just discovered from the dosing nurse at my methadone clinic that they reuse the take-home bottles. Is this acceptable practice? Since starting treatment at this clinic (moved from a nearby state), i have had continuing colds and other maladies, maybe from contaminated bottles. What should i do? This clinic is extremely small and appears to suffer from lack of funds. ## It really depends how they are doing it. As long as the bottles are cleaned and sterilized and/or they are reusing your same bottles, then they can legally do so. The only way it would be considered unacceptable is if they are not properly cleaning the bottles in between uses and are giving you dirty bottles that someone else has just brought back and used. This would be against sterile medical practices. However, if t...
