I had six teeth out last wk and was given 20 Tylenol for pain and they are gone..do you think i should ask for a few more as it is still hurts especially where the stitches are. I was one amoxicillin 500 4 time s a day before they were pulled but then still hurt Thanks ## Hello, Nanc! How are you? It is normal for the sockets to remain sore for awhile, after extractions. Whether or not you ask for more pain medications is up to you. How severe is it? The FDA classifies Tylenol 3 as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Had tooth pulled yesterday. Tooth had root canal, crown 20 yrs ago. Tooth got infected, had to be taken out. The doctor didn't say I needed an antibiotic to kill the infection. Would Amoxocillin do anything? It is very sore and throbbing. I don't want to take pain medication. I would think the infection is still in the gum. ## Hello, Susan! How are you? Sorry about the tooth problem. However, an antibiotic is not always necessary. In most cases of dental infection, the bacteria becomes trapped in the tooth, or under the tooth, so once it's extracted it will drain and usually clear up on its own. Thus, you shouldn't take an antibiotic, unless your doctor or dentist has specifically said you need to take one. Taking one when it isn't needed creates the risk of developi...

I have the following antibiotics that I can take to help me until I can get to my dental appointment, but my dental appointment isn't until February 10th. I always keep my appointments because it's hard to get in with them, they stay booked for the time frame I can get there. I have an infection in the front of my gum area, front tooth stays sore a lot. It comes and goes all the time. I can taste it too. Which one would help me best until my appointment? Macrobid, Levofloxacin, or Bactrim? ## Hi Kym, I see you posted this on January 30th...and it's now March 2nd (after your appointment date). I was wondering if this antibiodic was something that would treat this infection... ## Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim can in-fact be used to treat a tooth infection, but it is not usually the first choice for dental infections since many of them respond better to other alternatives, such as Penicillin and Amoxicillin. Learn More: Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethopriml Details I would also consider speaking with a dentist about the underlying cause of this infection, just to make sure it's not something that will be reoccurring. I was just wondering if i can use cephalexin or keflex for my tooth infection? ## Cephalexin is an antibiotic that is used to treat many types of infections. I do not take antibiotics because of severe reactions such as swollen eyelids and other issues.and also allergic to Flagyl. and possibly Levaquin. Also I believe antibiotics are over used and so far I have done without them for things everyone else takes them for such as Flu,colds and many other things. I use herbal products without most problems but now have a couple of painful tooth issues and perhaps some infections. I have no medical records to verify this due to many years of not having insurance or finances. I will see a dentist but having problems finding one that is more into natural products and low radiation x-rays. How can I ask for a Laboratory Culture in case I have to take some antibiotic: without causing a Dentist to become defensive and feel insulted.I am 70 yrs. old and...

I have been prescribed antibiotics for tooth infections before having dental work and pain went away. I'm allergic to penicillin can i take cefdinir? if I take cefdinir for this and I don't have an infection will it hurt me? ## It is a different antibiotic, but there is always a risk of discovering that you're also allergic to it. People allergic to one medication tend to find out there are others they are allergic to and if you don't have an infection, taking it could cause you to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria. Thus, you should only take it if your doctor or dentist confirms that you do have an infection. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can hel...

I used Bactrim; it takes more time to work than clindamycin. It has taken four days for the swelling to go down, but it has gone down and is almost normal now. I have double strength pills and will take them 2x a day for ten days. I also used the clove oil on my gums and that is working very well. They are going from red to pink again. You can buy this a CVS or Walgreens in the toothpaste isle. I also have been taking four advil 2x day for the swelling. ## Hello, KLF! How are you feeling? I'm glad the antibiotic worked for you. How fast it helps really depends on the nature of the bacteria and the severity of the infection. I have a abcess tooth which one is best cipro septra or keflex? ## Hi Brenda, From what I could gather, Ciprofloxacin is not commonly prescribed for dental infections. So it's probably not the best choice as a first line treatment option.. Septra and Keflex on the other hand, are more commonly prescribed by dentists for tooth and other mouth related infections, due to their broader spectrum. You may want to talk with your doctor about either one of those last two options to see what works best. Sometimes the right decision has to come from trial and error, depending on how your body reacts to each medication. Have you taken either of these medications in the past?

I have a infection in my gums from my tooth that broke off I took 3 so far and I'm still in pain ## Hello, Raven! How are you doing? Sorry about the dental infection. However, this medication is not a pain reliever, it is an antibiotic, so it can help with the infection, but will not relieve the pain. That will usually clear up in a few days, once the infection starts to clear up. Have you consulted your dentist? If the pain is severe, they should be able to prescribe something that can help.

Had a tooth pulled and was put on antibiotic, now I have a rash in the roof of my mouth. Should I go back to dentist? ## Hello, Lucy! How are you? Yes, you should see your dentist or PCP, as soon as possible. The antibiotic may have caused an oral yeast infection that will require treatment, if that's the case. The FDA lists the other typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you, I will go tomorrow.

And if so how much do I increase it by in order for it to work effectively? ## Hello, Michelle! How are you? I'm sorry about the infections. You should see your dentist, as while this is an antibiotic, it may not be the appropriate one to treat the infection causing your toothache. Additionally, you need to have the underlying cause repaired to prevent the infection from recurring. Can smz/tmp tab treat mouth sores ## Hi Linda, This question has an interesting response because Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim can actually cause sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips, as a rare but possible side effect. If these mouth sores that you're describing are related to an infection, I can confirm that this medication is also used for treatment of both tooth and gum infections; although it does not specify if mouth sores are included in this category of treatment. If I were in your shoes I would consider trying clove essential oil for any dental or mouth related infections or sores. There are also a good number of natural home remedies which you can find online, if these are identified as canker sores. Please post back with any additional information s...

my two back molar teeth are hurting. No dental coverage have almost thirty pills of amox tr-k clv 825-125 mg will this help my tootache. Also took ibprofen still hurts. ## Hello, Bebe! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain. This is an antibiotic, so it will only help if there is an infection present and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. And it will not negate the need to see a dentist, either. While it can remove an infection, it will not correct the underlying cause of an infection, so it will just keep recurring until the issue is corrected by your dentist. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have a painful toothache. The dentist office is closed on Sunday. I have 1 ciprofloxacin 500 mg and cephalexin 500 mg. I don't know if they are okay to take for my toothache. ## Those are both antibiotics, used to treat various types of infections, so they may help, but it will not be enough to completely get rid of the infection and they will not treat pain. It is very important that you see a dentist to get to the root of the problem and, if needed, get enough antibiotics to clear up an infection. Are there any other questions?

I have extreme wisdom tooth pain. Can a course of flucloxacillin help with this? ## It depends why you're having the pain. If it's due to an infection, then yes, the antibiotic can help. Its typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, if they are impacted, or otherwise growing in wrong the antibiotic will not help. Have you consulted your dentist? Regardless of what the problem is, it will still have to be corrected to prevent it from recurring in the future.

How many doses does it take to treat a yeast infection at 1 in morning and 1 at night. How long does it take to clear up the yeast infection I have gotten from being on penicillin? Sorry not sure if spelled correctly, I was on that for my tooth but my body always gets them when I take them. ## This medication is manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, and they list it as containing 100mgs of Doxycycline, which is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections (NDC 53489-119). Thus, it will not help with a yeast infection, as reported by the FDA, it could also cause one, or worsen an existing one, just like the Penicillin. Other side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. To treat a yeast infection, you...

I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...
