My husband's INR is at 1.5 should we be concerned...He has congestive heart failure and has a pace/devib also ## It really depends on what his doctor is aiming for, because in many cases, when they are using anticoagulants, such as Warfarin, they do try to aim for around 2.5. What has his doctor advised? Have they made any adjustments to his dosage?

I have had chronic severe back pain for approximately 30 years. I have bouts where I can hardly walk, currently I am in that state right now. A friend of mine says she takes this herbal dietary supplement for her severe back and neck pain. I am wondering if I can take the same even though I am on a regimen of warfin due to having had blood clots approximately seven years ago? I also see a chiropractor approximately every two weeks faithfully. ## Hello, Cindy! How are you? No, it is not safe for you take this supplement with Warfarin. It contains plum flower and ginseng, the latter of which also causes blood thinning. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Warfarin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. Is there anything else I...

My mother is 85 years old and her family doctor is suggesting she switch to this drug from Warfin. Are hers chances of a stroke higher or recovering from a stroke with this drug. She no longer drives so getting her INR checked once a month sometimes can be a challenge. Can anyone tell me how this drug is working for them. ## I haven't used the medication, but I can provide you with some more information on it. Pradaxa contains the active ingredient Dabigatran and, when studied were done that compared its efficacy and safety risks to that of Warfarin, it was found to be very comparable and was not shown to increase the risk of bleeding or other problems. You can learn more about it here: It's also been shown to just as effective at preventing clotting, but also to keep the INR mu...

I have been on Xarelto for about a month and my weight went up 25 to 30 lbs. Before I was on Xarelto I was taking Warfin and I was gaining any extra weight. I haven't been prescripted nor taken any other medications then the medications that has prescripted to me. I would like to know is there anyone else having this problem. ## Hi Tammy, Even though weight gain is not actually listed as being a possible side effect, I've actually been seeing quite a few posts from other individuals tracing it back to Xarelto as well. Unfortunately I find that in these types of cases, it seems like the only other options are to make more drastic changes to your diet; exercise harder/longer; or just stop taking what's triggering it to begin with. If you don't want to go that route, you ca...

Is there a generic or alternative to methadone 5 mg? What options do I have for motin 800 as I had heart surgery and am now on Lasix and warfin and can no longer take motrin? I need something for inflammation! Thanks in advance. ## Hello, Ellie! How are you doing? Methadone is the generic, but there are other opiate narcotics available. The FDA does warn that they carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. As to a replacement for the Motrin, you may be able to take a steroid, but only your doctor can decide what's safe for you. How long ago did you have the surgery? What other medications are you taking?

One Dr said warfin but cardiologist says xarelto? I take many meds due to abuse. They say that's not a problem. I also suffer a lot of pain and occasional migraines. They've reduced over the past few years. Any advice on the preferences? Warfin or Xarelta? I also live in a small town with a hospital not very well equipped. Almost 2 hours to nearest full hospital. i'm on coumadin for blood clots and recently had surgery they put me on oxycodone 10 mg.tabs for pain and know switched me to percocet which contains acetaminophen should i be concerned? i guess what i'm asking is which is better to take with warfin? ## John, I take Warfarin and haven't been able to add or subtract anything without doing a series of the INR so that the Warfarin could be adjusted if needed. Is the doctor who prescribed the pain medication, the same doctor who put you on Warfarin? If not, I would call the doctor who is treating the blood clots to see if you need to check (INR) or what. Even Alka Selzer can effect how thin your blood is.

I have been taking Eliquis for 1 1/2 Months and I think I am allergic to it. Everything was okay until this week. My stomach looks like I have been sunburned and is swollen I also have gained weight, and losing more memory. My urine is also real dark. this is just not normal. Do I need to go back to Warfin? Do you think Eliquis is working for me? ## Hi Lucille, Sorry to hear about your situation. If you've developed a rash and inflammation, I agree with you that those are probable signs of an allergic reaction. However, according to medlineplus.gov, "red, brown, or pink urine" listed as a potentially serious side effect as well as a possible overdose symptom that should be brought to your doctor's attention immediately. On the other hand, dark urine could also be attribu...
