Around 4 years ago our American Eskimo Spitz was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. We treated him for nearly a year for that problem through our family vet., but the medicine he was on didin't help. Finally he referred us to a specialist in Gathersburg, MD. At that appointment he was diagnosed with COPD, and the medicine he was treated with could have caused kidney failure. That vet put him on the tussigon and it does help some. The reason I am writing is because I see that several people have written in that they have the same breed of dog that we have. Just make sure that your diagnoses is correct and your dogs are being treated for the correct illness. I also see that people are having a hard time finding Tussigon. Why aren't your vets providing this for you? It is expensive, ...

VA was was giving me 4 5mg. percs per day, which just isnt enough. never mind the old fractures in lumbar 2-4 from service. in need of a doc.have the mri and all that. any help would be greatly appreciated. ## Thank you for your service and I am very sorry that you are suffering. I am not familiar with NYC, I haven't been there for a very, very long time, so I can't suggest a doctor, but what I can tell you is that to get the type of help you need, under the new laws, you'll have to see a pain management specialist. Our English Bulldog needs a pain medication for very severe tooth and gum infections. He is 10 years old & he cannot have the anesthetic needed for surgery to remove his teeth. We are just trying to keep him comfortable and were wondering if this would help with his pain? If you have a better solution, we would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you!!! ## Deramaxx contains the active ingredient Deracoxib, it is an anti-inflammatory that is often used to treat pain in dogs, such as that associated with osteoarthritis, and some types of surgery. The FDA lists the possible side effects for dogs as being similar to those in humans who taken anti-inflammatories, so they may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and increased risk of bleeding. Has the vet prescribed this for your pup? Wh...

I have a beige pill, is scored to be quartered, capital B in the upper left quarter and a 68 in the lower right corner. The pill is round. Nothing on the back. It is a bigger pill...almost 3/4 of an inch across. Does anyone know what it is? ## Merck Animal Health lists this tablet as containing Orbifloxacin, which is a canine antibiotic. They list its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

How many milligrams of Xanax is safe for a hundred pound dog to take to make it comfortable to give an enema? ## How many milligrams is SAFE? Well considering that xanax alone is nearly impossible to overdose on; a 100lb dog could "safely" take upwards of 500mg of xanax and not be harmed. That would be a good nap for sure! However that would be way too much. You did ask what was "safe" though. lol. In all reality it probably won't actually take any more than 2 mg or less.

Prescription # 548419 6/24/13. Small round yellow pill, scored ## Hello, Phillip! How are you? I'm sorry, but the prescription numbers are unique and relevant to only that pharmacy, so no one else can tell you what the medication is by referencing it. Have you tried calling them to ask? What was it prescribed to treat?

Im 100% disabled. I was forced to switch doctors at the VA and my new doc says that only a person who has cancer should get pain meds, how ignorant. I know of a dr. Cohen (he's out of buisness. The pain relief centers wont see me because I had a dwi 3 yrs ago. Does anyone know where else to look in Mn?? If not Mn how about a nearby state. I heard there were a couple of compassionate docs in Milwaulkee area but I lost tract of there names?? I heard Fl is a bust??? ## Why were you forced to switch and what type of medications are involved here? I saw your other posts and on further though, I'm thinking that maybe you should try contacting the social work department at your nearest local hospital. They can usually find help for you, they may know a pain management place that will s...

The scope of veterinary medicine is wide, covering all animal species, both domesticated and wild, with a wide range of conditions which can affect different species. I'm a vet and have been on opiates for 15yrs. The reg. meds I'm on have been working for 7 yrs with no changes (90 mg sr morphine + 8 of 5/325 oxys + 3 59mg tramadol + gabapentin). The Va took 90 mg, a whole midday dose and all my tramadol in 1 month. Oh ya, and my .05mg xanax too. Now they wanna use 7.5 mg ir morphine instead of all my percocet. Help me. We vets have to go through a pain clinic now at the Va. All it is, is a doctor taking everything from me. WHAT CAN I DO OR SAY? IM IN PAIN WITH NERVE PAIN. ## Hey, went through the same thing at the va. I went through the choice program and see a real pain management doctor in the civilian sector. Pain in the ass to get approved but it is possible. Write your congressman if you are not seeing progress! Trust me your congressman...

My Labrador is 3 years of age and he had a hotspot previously. The vet treated him and she prescribed medication. She told me that it will return and I must keep cleaning and applying medication on it. I have been doing this and it gets healed but this time it's not getting healed. Can I give him prednisone and purbac as I don't have the finances at the moment to take him to the vet? Thank you.

are there any bad drug interactions using these 2 medicines at the same time albuterol and vetprofen ## Hello, Merion! How are you? Who or what is taking them both? Vetprofen is a veterinary medication intended for use in animals, so the answer will depend on the type of animal. They are listed as containing the active ingredient Carprofen, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that's used to treat pain and swelling. Its typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and stomach upset. Albuterol is classified by the FDA as a bronchodilator that is used to increase air flow to the lungs. Its typical side effects may possibly include headache, dizziness, dry mouth and nervousness. Albuterol actually isn't approved for use in animals.

My dog has a 4 out of 6 murmur and easily inducible cough. His pulses are good, but a narrowing of the trachea is causing a constant cough and weird breathing. He is on this medication but I would like to know if the FDA approved it for use in veterinary medicine? Thanks. ## Yes, it is. I've had 2 poodles that have had tracheal stricture/collapse, congestive heart failure/pulmonary edema, and chronic cough related to these issues. Tussigon allowed us to finally get some sleep. Do remember that it contains a narcotic though, so monitor your pup closely til you're sure it can tolerate the drug. BTW, I'm an RN and have also worked as a vet assist. ## My dog has congestive heart failure and needs Tussigon. Where may I get a prescription filled for this med?

VA hospitals took hydrocodone/oxycodone off their prescription list. I have 4 degenerative discs in my neck. Also constant shoulder/arm pain due to rotator cuff tears on both arms. Is there really a pharmacy out there or doctor to give my a pain /depressant pill. I live in middle west Florida. Thank you ## You will need to be treated in the private sector. You may want to check and verify in writting that the VA has taken those meds off of their prescription list. There are others who are being prescribed them. ## Thank you BL

I have some Tresaderm ear drops for my dog that expired some time ago. Will they still be effective? ## How long has it been since they expired? When it comes to expired meds, my perspective is that in most cases, solution/liquid-based products don't last as long as medications in pill form and therefore I personally wouldn't trust expired ear drops if it's significantly past their due date. If you are going to attempt to use them, it may just be best to get a second opinion from a licensed veterinarian who can attest to their long term efficacy and safety. How well they were stored will also play a role in this decision.

I have a puppy weighing 2.5 pounds and was given a triwormer that they say is Drontal. It looks like a heart shape that was scored in half but has an "R" imprinted, pale yellow in color. ## Hello Cindy, I did just a bit of research on the pill you described and I found a Drontal pill that is a freeform bone shapped pill with a score in the middle. I can see how the bone shape looks like two hearts, is that what you're describing or is it a heart shape with a score down the middle of the heart? Here is some addition info I sourced from the NIH. NDC: 0859-2180 Active Ingredients: Praziquantel 22.7mg Pyrantel Pamoate 22.7mg Febantel 113.4mg Color:Brown Score: 2 Shape: Freeform (Bone) Size: 20mm Let me know if this is what you were describing. If not I can continue my search.

The smell of Homatropine is so bad my dog coughs from it. Why would it be included in a Hydrocodone syrup for my dog's collapsing heart condition and heart mural valve problem? ## There is a cough syrup, called “Hycodan” that is prescribed for bronchitis, pneumonia and the like for severe coughing.. it’s only two ingredients or hydrocodone and homatropine. One teaspoon is equivalent to one 5mg Vicodin, or more known now as Norco. The difference being is that there’s no acetaminophen in the liquid versus the pill.. I know allot about this because I have C.O.P.D. from childhood asthma.. There’s even a pill form of the “Hycodan Syrup” (Well there was a pill form 25 years ago so I’m assuming that it’s still on the market however I do...

I found a very small green round pill look like liquid in it. Could it possibly be a dilaudid? ## Hi Nett, Judging from your description, I get the sense that it may be an OTC pill or some sort of dietary supplement; possibly even an illicit or foreign drug. However, there's really no way it could be a legitimate Dilaudid pill, since all U.S. prescription drugs are required by law to have an imprint for verification of substance and dosage. Is there any marking or imprint on the pill that you may have overlooked?

Hi - I want to know if Fentanyl is only prescribed for veterinary use? ## No, it is also used in humans, most commonly as a micro dosed patch that is time released, and changed every 2 to 3 days. However, it is not the preferred first choice for pain treatment, and is usually only prescribed when other options have been exhausted. The FDA warns that it carries a high risk of being habit forming, and may cause other traditional opiate side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with?
