I read that Ebastel could be useful to Cold Urticaria sufferers. I would like to hear from anyone using this drug, as to whether it really works and is it available in Canada? ## I have had cold urticaria since I was 16 - about 30 years now. I use a very effective drug - Cyproheptadine - used to be sold under the brand name Periactin - but is now off patent so sold under the generic name. You have to ask a pharmacist to order it for you as they do not usually stock it. You do not need a prescription. Not much money in it for the drug companies so it is not promoted. It works.

I had severe hives (urticaria) and monsteresque face swelling (angiodema). Nothing helped. I tried 6 doctors. The seventh put me on 10 mg of Doxepin. Cured! I work hard on keeping the weight off. Have gained some on this drug but what is the alternative? ## Hello, Darla! How are you? That can be a side effect of this medication, as reported by the FDA, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings, and dry mouth. As to your other options, that depends on what else you've tried? Can you please post back with more details? ## Basically I have only tried Zyrtec. Every doctor prescribed it. The bottle says one every 24 hours if I remember correctly. But docs told me up to 7 per day and some said unlimited. Yet it didn't touch my hives/angeodema. Have gained 20 pound. Essential...

I am suffering from chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) since 2005 and taking Levocetirizine 5mg every alternate day. Is there any possibility of serious side effect as i am taking it for long time? Levocetirizine or Ebastine which one will be the better choice for long-term use in CIU? ## What has your doctor advised? There are always risks associated with the long-term use of any medication, including the possibility of organ damage, such as that which may occur to the liver, since most medications are processed through it. As to which one may be better, it is hard to say, because they all carry the possibility of risks. Only you and your doctor can decide what is right and carries the least risk for you. You can learn more about both of them here: ## Thanks Verwon for your reply. none...

Why was my 9yr. old child prescibed hydroxyz for his first bout with urticaria instead of benydryll? ## Dear MOM - " Hydroxyzine is used primarily as an antihistamine for the treatment of itching, allergies, hyperalgesia, motion sickness-induced nausea, and insomnia, as well as notably for the treatment of mild anxiety. Even though it is an effective sedative, hypnotic, analgesic, and tranquilizer, it shares almost none of the abuse, dependence, addiction, and toxicity potential of other drugs used for the same range of therapeutic reasons. " It sounds like your child's physician felt it would be best to administer this treatment instead of an over the counter product. You can read more about this medication at: Hope this helps! after taking Robitussin, my wife had a reaction with systemic urticaria. Her only known allergy or sensitivity is to sulfa medications. I can't find any sulfa in Robitussin. Any ideas ## Hello, Vance! How is your wife doing? There's a chance that she's allergic to an ingredient in the Robitussin. If you were to research this in the articles provided by the NIH, you would see that they warn about it being a possibility. When someone is allergic to one medication, or class of medications, it is common to find more that they also cause them to suffer allergic reactions. Such reactions tend to get worse, with repeated exposure, so she needs to stop taking it and have it checked out by her doctor. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I know this was written a while ago but ...

My daughter Catherine (age 17), had an extreme case of Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (lasted over a year). We saw specialist at Nemours Children's hospital (Orlando, FL) and they recommend Xolair inj's. as a course of treatment. She has had 6 months of infusions. Although her hives are under control with the help of this medication, the side effects are a bit alarming. Each time she has the shots done, she becomes very confused, dizzy and lethargic. She has trouble remembering things and seems as though she's intoxicated (stumbling around). To the point where she is vomiting and unable to function normally.
