My wife was prescribed Cephalexin for a stye and I was wondering since it is an antibiotic, whether it is okay for her to be out in the sun? I could not find anything on the included drug label insert specifically mentioning sun exposure risks, but I thought I would check seeing as how other antibiotics are known to increase sensitivity to sunlight. Any feedback appreciated. The weather's been real nice and we've been wanting to spend time outdoors and at swimming pools. ## Cephalexin should not cause an increased sensitivity to sunlight (there is no mention of a concern or interaction from the NIH or Medline Plus). There are other antibiotics which are known to increase photosensitivity, and those are: doxycycline, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ofloxacin, trimethop...

Can I work in the sun for long periods taken doxycycl hyc 100 mg mutual twice a days ## Hi, Neal! Doxycycline can make you more sensitive to the effects of the sun and heat, so you may burn, dehydrate or develop heat stroke much faster than usual. While it would be preferable to stay out of the sun for the duration of treatment, I realize it's not always practical to do so, since some jobs leave you with no choice, so the next best thing to do would be to use a much stronger sunscreen than usual and apply it more often, plus make sure to take in extra fluids, if it's safe for you to do so, to prevent dehydration. I am very active and exposed to sunlight everyday. Do I need to keep inside and avoid the sun during the 7 days that keflex has been prescribed to me? ## Avoidance is probably not necessary, but you will want to use a sun block and make sure to keep hydrated and avoid overheating. ## I agree with Verwon, it is okay to be in the sun while taking Keflex (active ingredient Cephalexin). There are other antibiotics which will make you more sensitive to sunlight but this is not one of them. I checked with both Medline Plus and the NIH, and nowhere did it mention such an issue.

I have been prescribed duloxetine and on the box from pharmacist it says avoid excessive sunlight ## Hello, Kathy! How are you? Yes, that is common with many medications, they can make you more sensitive to the effects of the sun, so you may burn much faster than usual, or become overheated much sooner than normal. Other typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight gain. Is there anything else I can help with?

Can Nicorandil cause a rash and severe itching of skin that has been exposed to sunlight. I have symptoms that appear very similar to sunburn accompanied by an intense, unbearable itching after a very brief exposure to sunlight. ## Hi, Ray! I did some searching and it appears that it can do that in some people that take it. I found a study that lists that it occurred in several of the test subjects and was related to the Nicorandil. Learn more Nicorandil details here. I am not sure what other medications may be available for you. Have you consulted your doctor? Do you use sunblock? ## Hi Verwon Thanks for your reply. Yes, I do use sunblock now but at the time I got the rash I wasn't using any. I know I should always protect myself from the sun but I have never had a problem before. ...

I'm on the sulfameth/trimethop medication right now for the treatment of mild ancne. Why should I avoid sunlight? I went to a tenning bed and had no changes. ## this medicine can give you a headache because it makes you more sensitive to light. ## What may happen if combined with caffeine? ## It can make you heat/light sensitive, which could result in your burning, much sooner than usual, you could also develop sun poisoning, skin rashes, and etc. Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim can also cause elevated heart rate, and nervousness, as side effects, so combining it with caffeine could worsen those issues. Other side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, and headache. Is there anything I can help with?

This medicine that I just started taking for a spider bite says to avoid excessive exposure to direct and artificial sunlight. I'm on vacation and want to enjoy the pool. Can I lay out? ## Hi, Karenset! How are you? Doxycyline can make you more sensitive to the sun, so you may burn or get heat stroke much faster than normal. Thus, if you really want to enjoy the sunshine, it would be best to be very careful and use a heavier sunscreen than you normally would. You should also make sure to drink extra fluids, since this sensitivity could also cause dehydration. Learn more Doxycycline details here. Avoiding sun exposure would be best and you should never lay out in it, if your doctor has told you not to do so, but I do understand wanting to enjoy your vacation. Please be careful!

Could citalopram Hbr 20 mg tab cause itching of the skin on arms, head and face? Warning on bottle mentions "avoid prolonged sunlight". ## Hi Vickie, If it says to avoid prolonged sunlight, the medication probably causes some sort of Photosensitivity. Photosensitivity is a skin reaction (i.e. rash) that occurs after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or an artificial light source. This could explain the very symptoms you're describing. I do also want to note that itching, rashes, swelling, hives or blisters, are all listed as severe side effects of Citalopram; in which case it would probably be best to let your doctor know about this as soon as possible. Can I take a 500 mg Cipro tablet after I took my Vitamin D supplement? The antibiotic is for a small boil. ## Dear Deb, Vitamin D is naturally present in our bodies from sunlight. I don't mean for this to come off as sarcastic in any way, but to my understanding Ciprofloxacin does not interfere with what's otherwise naturally occurring in our bodies (with the exception of reducing beneficial gut flora - and that could be replenished with prebiotics/probiotics). However I believe most vitamins and minerals in their raw form should be fine to take alongside it. I am also speaking from personal experience. NOTE: According to a Walgreen's disclaimer, "sulfa antibiotics in particular can reportedly cause photosensitivity", in which case, taking a Vitamin D supplement inst...

I was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri and put on Diamox. I live up north and want to relax in the sun while we still have it, but the bottle says to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Why does it say that? ## Because many medications, such as Diamox, make you more sensitive to the effects of the sun, which means you could burn much sooner than you expect, or develop heat stroke much faster than your normally would. Learn more Diamox details here. Thus, sun exposure should be avoided. However, if you really want to spend time out in it and your doctor approves, then you should make sure to cover as much of your body as possible and use a high SPF sun protectant on any exposed skin. Are there any other questions I can help with?

Flat round white pill. Vitamin D3 1000 Unit. Pls describe what this will do and is the dose too much? ## Vitamin D supplementing can be essential for those who don't get enough sunlight. Vitamin D2 is a synthetic version of D3, so it is great that you have D3 instead of D2! Vitamin D insufficiency can result in thin, brittle, or misshapen bones, while sufficiency prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and, together with calcium, helps to protect older adults from osteoporosis. Personally I supplement with Vitamin D3 2000 Unit. I have read that as much as 5000 Unit isn't overdosing, especially if you aren't in the sunlight very often. Hope this information helps! can it lead to skin problems & if yes ,the extent ## Oxcarbazepine, the active ingredient in Trileptal, is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer. The only commonly reported skin issue is a sensitivity to sunlight, which could result in getting sunburn much faster than normal and much more severe. However, medications can affect everyone differently, so if you are experiencing some type of skin problem, you need to contact your doctor to see if it is being caused by the medication or by something else.
