Sulfamethoxazole Can U Drink Alcohol

I have not taken sulfamethoxazole since Wednesday. Can I safely go out and have beers Saturday night? ## According to The University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), taking Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim with alcohol may cause serious side effects, including but not limited to a racing or pounding heart beat, sweating, severe flushing and rapid breathing. Since everyone is different there's virtually no way of knowing if you'll still be safe (even with a few days gap), but I would speculate that if you exercise caution and drink responsibly that you'd probably have nothing to worry about. Have you discussed this with your prescribing doctor?

Almost everybody here talks about drinking much. My question is if I take a simple cup of red wine after my dinner at 8 and then take my sulfa at 12. I really do not think that a cup of good red table wine would be so disastrous as some readers have commented. Thank you. ## I think your intuition is correct - moderation is the key. One cup of red wine should not result in a bad reaction, although it may increase certain effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, or upset stomach. Be sure to learn about the possible side effects from the drug itself so that you can monitor how you feel and report any adverse effects to your doctor if need be. You can see a more comprehensive list on the page for Sulfamethoxazole Details. Hope this helps! ## Thank you very much! ## If I skip my medicine for o...

Hi, I finished taking Sulfamethoxazole on Wednesday and three days later, I drank alcohol. I woke up the next morning with a bad itchy skin rash. Was this caused by the alcohol? The rash came and went that day. Now on day 2, it's pretty much gone, with just a little area under my chin on my neck. Will the rash go away on it's own, and how soon? Thank you. ## Hello, Gugs! How are you? Has there been any change? Since you finished it a few days before, I am rather doubtful that the medication played a role, however, I am not a doctor so I can't say for sure. It would be best to have it checked out to be sure. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic (non-itchy) skin rash and diarrhea. And while alcohol can make them...

I have been on this medication since tuesday (and have not experienced any side effects) when I thought my wound was infected, but it was not. My doctor gave me about 25 pills to take as a precaution to avoid it getting infected in the future. If I do not take the pills for 36 hours, will I be able to drink alcohol without having side effects? Also, what is the likelihood of my wound getting infected if I do not take the antibiotic for over 48 hours? ## Hello, Colleen! How are you? It is really best to abstain from alcohol, while taking any prescription medication. When you imbibe while on an antibiotic, it can cause worsening of the side effects, so you may experience nausea, dizziness and drowsiness. It can cause one drink to affect you as if you'd had 2 and so on. And taking a br...

Do you think its okay to drink tonight? ## Hello, Ali! How are you? That close to having taken it, you will likely still experience more nausea and dizziness than usual, so it would be best to avoid drinking. If you feel you can't, then just try not to overdo it. I have been taking sulfamethoxazole 2 times per day for 10 days. Today is the 10th day (my last dose). Can I drink alcohol tomorrow after 24 hours has passed? ## Hello, Michelle! How are you? That should be fine, as long as your doctor approves. However, you should be aware that it could still worsen some of the side effects, so you may feel more drowsy, dizzy and nauseous than usual, as listed by the FDA. One drink may affect you as if you'd had 2 and etc. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Finished the med (sulfamethoxazole) but still feel sick, weak, no energy, dry eyes, dizziness even laying down, & sweats. It's my buddy's 17th birthday tonight so I was gonna have a couple shots are there any dangerous side affects to worry about? ## Hi, Sean! I'm not sure what you decided to do last night, but I'll still add the details for anyone else seeking the same information… Drinking alcohol while taking this antibiotic can cause an enhancement of the side effects, so one may experience more dizziness, nausea and drowsiness than usual. It's almost like making one drink the same as having 2 and so on. Learn more Bactrim details here. Thus, if one must imbibe, please be aware of this and make sure that you will not be driving or operating any dangerous machinery. are there any other questions or concerns?

My boyfriend drank while on sulfamethoxazole. Now he feels like poop. He is suffering. So my question is, what now? Should he go to the drs again? Wait it out? Obviously he isn't drinking tonight, lol but i also think he should wait to continue the prescription, once the alcohol is out of his system.... These are being taken for more of a "preventive" infection from a spider bite he got at work. So, once he's free of these nasty enhanced side effects he can then continue the prescription (he only took 2 pills, before consuming beer). Thanks in advance. Oh and if you are thinking of drinking while on this, i would think twice. Its equivalent to the flu. ## Hello, Crystal! How are you? Unless his doctor instructs otherwise, it really should just be a matter of waiting it o...

Having party, is it ok to drink beer ehile taking this med ## Hello, Mac! How are you? No, it is best not to imbibe, while taking this medication. It tends to cause some pretty severe side effects in a fairly large percentage of people that take it and those will increase with the consumption of alcohol. Regular side effects may include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhea and non-allergic skin rash. Is there anything else I can help with? ## can you put the life on the risk if you drink like 12 beers and take the medication or is it just the side effect

I have been taking Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim twice a day for 30 days. Today is my last day. How long should I wait to drink alcohol!? ## With most medications, alcohol can intensify the side effects, so you may experience more nausea, dizziness, and drowsiness than usual. It could take about a week for things to return to normal, after finishing this antibiotic, so it would be best to proceed with caution, according to FDA reports. How are you feeling? Have you experienced any side effects? ## I feel pretty fine. It's been a couple days since I last took it and ended up drinkin at the Cubs game last night and I was alright. I'll probably chill for a couple more days before I do again to make sure it's out of my system. Thanks for the reply! ## Can Bactrim (using for ...

I took my antibiotic sulfamethoxazole 20 minutes ago. Will it hurt me to take one of my prescription xanax as well? And are u supposed to drink water with it to avoid sickness? ## They can usually be taken together, as long as your doctor approves, but you may experience more side effects, which the FDA lists as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and dizziness. Water will not help avoid nausea, so it can be taken with most any liquids, other than alcohol. How are you doing, now? ## When taking sulfamethoxazole and tamsulosin can we take Xanax for anxiety

I was told I had a Kidney infection and was prescribed sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim 800/160MG to take one pill in the morning and one pill at night. This Saturday night will be my last pill. I also was prescribed Metronidazole, to take two pills in the morning and two at night. I just took my last 2 pills for that. Now, I know I have to wait at least 48 hours after taking Metronidazole to drink alcohol. But my question here is how long after I take my last pill Saturday night can I sit down and get drunk? I was thinking 24 hours after I take my last pill? Since it is a "normal" antibiotic. Should I wait longer? ## You may actually want to give it a couple of days, because it does linger in your body and continue to work for several days after you finish taking it. That is why so...

can you have a few cocktails while taking this med? ## Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim is an antibiotic used to treat various types of infections. For this class of medications, you are warned against the use of alcohol, because it can aggravate the side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness and dizziness. This could cause you to become impaired much faster than usual, for instance, you may act as if you are completely drunk, after just 2 drinks, where as it may normally take you 4 or 5 to even feel tipsy. can i work out or drink alcohol while on this sulfameth medication? i have a rash, so what is the improvement supposed to look like. does the rash just start to disapear? ## I wouldn't suggest drinking alcohol while on this antibiotic. The consumption of alcohol decreases the effectiveness of antibiotics and even a single drink or several drinks of alcohol can inhibit a drug's metabolism by competing with the drug for the same set of metabolizing enzymes. Alcohol reduces production of white blood cells, those that fight against infection, so you are working against the antibiotic by drinking while on it. Furthermore Sulfamethoxazole has contraindications against alcohol, that may potentially cause more serious side effects: "Drinking alcohol while taking sulfamethoxazole may...
