I want to long-term store sulfamethoxazole for potential emergency use. What is the PRACTICAL shelf-life of this antibiotic? Forget about the manufacturer's statements. I have suspicions that I am pregnant and have even taking this medicine twice a day orally for acne for a couple weeks. I tested myself last night and it said I was not pregnant. I was wondering if this medicine can give false negative results? And how likely it is? ## I'm not aware of anything showing that this antibiotic is known to cause false results on a pregnancy test. How long is this medicine good for. ## Hi rae, According to Roche Pharmaceuticals, the tablets as well as the oral suspensions of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim both have a shelf life of 5 years. However I'm assuming this is based on their recommended storage temperature being below 30 degrees celsius (86*F). On the contrary, a news article by the LA Times suggests from prior studies that many medications are actually good for up to 40 years beyond the listed expiration date. They also go on to state that expiration dates are often set solely based upon one's own discretion without a specific reason or evidence indicating that it truly has expired.
