I have what I think were some type spider or some other type of insect bites 5 of them, they sort of look like a Brown Recluse bite, but not as bad. They turned into ugly open sores within a few hours, just like a Brown Recluse Spider bite would do. The doctor says the it now looks like cellulitis, that's a skin infection below the outer skin layers. So the bites went deep into the hypodermis skin layers .My doctor gave me some other type of antibiotic for 10 days 2000 mg a day. They cleared up some, but are still ugly pits, Yesterday, the doctor gave me the SMT 800/160 drugs. Take 2 per day, for 10 days. As of tonight, I have not had any side effects, but with only 4 pills in my system, it may be to early for side effects to show up. I will try to come back later in the week and po...

I have been subscribed sulfameth trimethoprim 800 160 for a skin rash. Sulfar content scares me since I had a friend died taking sulfa with Steven Johnson Syndrome. I need more advice on this med. It was prescribed by a Nurse Practioner ## Please see Jo Ann's question below, have not received an answer. ## Hello, Jo Ann! How are you? This is an antibiotic that's used to treat infections and its normal side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. That syndrome is a possible risk associated with any antibiotic, but it is a very slight risk. If it's just a skin rash and not an actual infection, then this medicat...

I have cold for last one week, and it's getting worth. I have mussle ach, throat pain, and a little fever. Does Sulfameth Trimethoprim work for such symptons? ## Hi AJ, Sorry to say, but Antibiotics in general will not work for colds, flu, and other viral infections. For such symptoms I would suggest looking into more natural alternatives, such as: Raw Honey + Tea - for throat pain/inflammation Lavender Essential Oil - for any muscle aches Plenty of water + Fruits & Veggies - for the fever Many fruits and Vegetables have natural healing properties that can help get your body's temp back to normal in very little time at all (if this is all you're eating for the most part). I also believe the therapeutic properties of honey, tea, and lavender will be of great benefit. I ho...

Can you take a sleep aid like Zzzquil or Unisom with sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160? ## Hello, DeeDee! How are you? I didn't find any interactions or problems listed, but it's always best to double check such information to be sure. The antibiotic may cause some drowsiness, so taking it with a sleep aid could intensify that and really knock you out. Thus, you should make sure that you only take it, when you're going straight to bed and won't be driving or anything. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, for the antibiotic may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Should i go to the ER..what will stop the itching..please help! ## Hello, Bertha! How are you? When I had an allergic reaction to this medication, my doctor put me on Benadryl and a steroid skin cream, which requires a prescription. If you're not having trouble breathing, the ER is likely not necessary, but you should consult your regular doctor to see what is appropriate for you to use. As reported by the FDA a skin rash can be a normal side effect of most antibiotics, but when the itching is added, the is likely due to an allergic reaction, so it was smart to stop taking it, because such reactions only tend...

I want to know do what medication does because I never took it before. I start today. ## Hi Tena, The combination of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim is an antibiotic, prescribed to treat a variety of infections (including bacterial, fungal, and protozoal). One thing I also want to mention so you can be aware of it, is that many people here have reported serious side effects/allergic reactions such as skin rashes, joint pain, nausea, migraines, etc, while taking it. So god forbid, if you do experience similar symptoms (which don't happen to everyone) I'd just encourage you to contact your doctor immediately for further advice on what to do from there. My 21 year old daughter has been on this medication for 6 days. She developed a rash and in one day seems to cover her arms legs chest and face. She has quit taking medication and we are treated the rash. Any advice for relief. ## Hello, Anna! How are you and your daughter? Does the rash include hives and itching, or is it just a visible skin rash? A non-allergic rash can be a normal side effect of antibiotics and, if that's what it is, she should continue her course of treatment as it is nothing to worry about and will eventually go away on its own. However, if she has hives and itching, then she is possibly having an allergic reaction and should seek medical attention. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea, dizziness, headache and diarrhea.
