My husband has strep throat and has no insurance. He has some sulfa.... Here but we are not sure if he can use it... ## Hello, Kathy! How is your husband doing? This is an antibiotic, so it can be used to treat various types of bacterial infections. However, the concern is that if he doesn't have enough to complete a full course of it, it could create the risk of his developing antibiotic resistant bacteria, the same is true if he doesn't actually have an infection. Typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. It would really be best for him to see a doctor to have them confirm the presence of an infection, if there is one and to have the proper antibiotic prescribed. What dosage is this one?

As my mom is trying to make me take it. ## According to an abstract from nih.gov, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim is no longer commonly recommended by doctors for treating respiratory tract infections (such as strep throat) - as streptococcus pyogenes is believed to be resistant to this drug. This is not to say it won't work or that it never gets prescribed. However it does suggest that perhaps there are better/safer options out there of which I'd encourage you to ask your doctor about after an in person evaluation. Besides that, if your mom doesn't have a full prescription you could end up creating an even stronger antibiotic resistant bacteria that only makes things worse. Friend needs help. Treated with this medication for infected skin strep. Has fever to the point of chattering teeth, major body aches, extreme fatigue, splitting headache, diarrhea. Unfortunately, those can be side effects of this medication and, once it is discontinued, the only thing that will help is time. I had a bad allergic reaction to it several years ago and it took about 2 weeks for all of the symptoms to go away. If his doctor approves, some Benadryl may help with some of the symptoms, as well as Imodium for the diarrhea. Beyond that, it's just a waiting game.
