Sulfame Side Effects

I have been taking this drug for 3 weeks because of continual UTI infections. My Dr. prescribed this and it is working so far except I am having difficulty falling asleep each night until 3 am. I live in the central time zone and this is very late for me. I generally go to sleep around 10-11PM. My Dr. asked me to take this at night before going to bed. Could this procedure and medicine cause sleeping problems? ## Yes, antibiotics can sometimes cause that in some people that take them, as reported by the FDA. I've been taking sulfameth for 5 days for a sinus infection and the side effects are worse than the infection. I keep running a fever and feel listless. ## Have you contacted your doctor? The fever may be related to the infection itself and the other side effects should wear off, once you are done with your course of the medication. It may also cause nausea, dizziness and diarrhea.

Can this pill have a reverse effect on drowsiness. I took two pills in 12 hours and was up agitated all night. ## SMX-TMP is an antibiotic used to treat various types of infections. And yes, not everyone experiences the same side effects and, thought it is rare, some people do experience the opposite effects. If it is creating a major problem, you should speak to your doctor. I have recurrent UTI every 10 weeks and take Sulfameth Trim, two per day for 7 days. Due to the side effects I experience can I stop them after 5 days or is that too soon? ## If the UTI is recurring that frequently, it sounds like this isn't the right antibiotic for you, to begin with. Has your doctor had you try any others? Every medication carries the risk of side effects, so that is something you will probably have to face with any antibiotic. They can include: nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and skin rash. What other steps do you take to try to prevent the infection from recurring?

Any time you feel chest tightness and are experiencing fluid retention, you should contact your doctor immediately, those can be symptoms of congestive heart failure, which I found out the hard way. My son is 12 months old and was prescribed Sulfameth Trimeth 5ml twice daily. Can this keep him awake? He's been having stomach cramps which I have been treating with greek yogurt to add back the good bacteria. However, he seems wide awake when he should be exhausted and ready for sleep. I'm having constritures of my tendons in ankles is this normal. Felt like tendon was as tight as rubberband and going to break for like ten mins. First the left outside ankle then the rt. outside ankle began. ## No, that is not normal and could be the sign of a potentially dangerous reaction to this medication. Learn more Bactrim details here. I think that is where the sleeplessness side effect proved true for us. She's also been up 2 of six nights vomiting. The DR said we can try finishing up the round to see if it took care of teh UTI, so I hope it's worth it!

No, it generally isn't used that long, but they may have decided it was necessary if the infection was very severe. And, if he's having breathing problems, you should definitely consult the doctor to see what's causing them.

My 9month old was given sulfamethoxazloe 1 teaspoon twice a day. He is not eating a lot at all and his stool is a gray kind of clay color with a very bad smell. My daughter is 5 years old and has urinary reflux stage 3. She has been taking sulfameth-trimeth since she was 2 years old. She always has breakthrough infections. My question is what are the long term side effects of her taking the medication for so long and is it necessary? I woke up this morning with a skin rash on my arms, stomach, and thighs. So far I have taken 5 sulfamethoxazole tmp ds tablets. One pill twice a day. I know rash is a side effect. I have one pill remaining, is it ok to take the last pill ## Not being your doctor, I cannot tell you if it is ok to take the pill(s) or not. However my opinion is if this is your last pill, you should finish taking it as prescribed by your doctor; unless the side effects become more severe or if your complication has been taken care of already by the medication. Based on your description of the rash it sounds like it is severe, but it is really up to you if you feel the need to contact your doctor for advice. My 87 father was prescribed Sulfamethoxazole after being diagnosed with urinary/prostate infection. He has taken it for only one day but he experienced weakness, muscle aches in legs and today he woke with fever. I have a 4 year old grandson that has been on this for 10 days. No problems till tenth day. Broke out in a rash all over his body. Face (Cheeks) puffy. We gave him Benadryl. Started taking this med yesterday due to possible uti, woke up this morning with watery diarrhea is this normal ## Hi Marianne, From what I've researched, watery diarrhea is listed as a side effect that should be reported to your doctor immediately. I realize today is Christmas and many doctors are on vacation during the holidays, so hopefully your symptoms aren't very severe? I had a pillar cyst removed from the back of my head and the wound got infected, so the doctor prescribed this med to clear it up. Wow! I have never had an allergic reaction to anything in my life, but this drug knocked me for a loop.
