I was prescribed this antibiotic & Docycycline Hyclate 100mg cap 3days ago for my eczema which got infected (because I was scratching). On the 2nd day I have been taking both meds (BID every 12 hrs for both), I noticed that I developed rash & what looks like hives on my neck. Today, my upper chest has some kind of prickly heat rash like a baby's bum. Do I discontinue these 2 antibiotics? ## Hi Lorna, It's difficult to say which of these medications might be causing the side effects your experiencing. TRIMETHO/SULFA 161-899 mg tab (QLT) expired 4 years ago. Is it safe to use? ## Hello, Marmol! How are you? This antibiotic doesn't become toxic, once it expires, but it does start to lose efficacy, so it may not work as well as it did, when new, which creates the danger of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Thus, it would be best to dispose of it and see your doctor, if you feel you have an infection and need an antibiotic. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

im break out if I take penicillin and I was wondering if sulfa trimeth ds 800-160 have any penicillin bc the doctor give me some and I was just wondering if it have any before I take any ## Hi ash, Sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim does not contain any penicillin; nor is it derived from penicillin. It's actually a sulfonamide. So as long as you aren't also allergic to sulfa drugs, there shouldn't be any problems in my opinion. Additionally, my thoughts are that if the doctor was already aware of your allergy to penicillin, he/she probably wouldn't make the mistake of prescribing something that was related to it. Although it is good that you took the time to check because mistakes do happen. I hope this helps!

on 5/27/14 i was prescribed Expired Sulfamethoxazole 800mg-trimethorprim 160 mg. The pharmacist wrote an illegible expiration date. How long is this med usually good for? and would it be safe to take almost 1 year later? ## Hello, Joey! How are you? If they are in a pharmacy bottle, the expiration would be one year from when they were dispensed to you. So, the expiration date wouldn't be until 05/26/2015. At that point, they start to degrade and may lose effectiveness. This is an antibiotic and the FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Should I be taking Sulfameth Trimethoprim 800/160 while I am taking 4 mg of Warfarin daily? ## Were these prescribed by the same doctor, so they are aware that you are taking both? The Sulfamethoxazole in this antibiotic can cause increased plasma concentrations of the Warfarin, which can increase your risk of bleeding, so someone that is using both must be carefully monitored by their doctor, because their INR should be checked frequently.

What is the usual dosage for this med? Dr. gave a sample for the earache, but failed to tell the amount. ## Based on my research, dosage requirements for this medication can depend largely on what you are taking it for. However the "average" oral dose of Sulfamethoxazole (800 mg) + Trimethoprim (160 mg) DS (double strength) for an adult would be to take a pill every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. Even if this is the average dosage for most conditions, it would probably still be best to confirm what your doctor recommends for YOU. This oral medication should be taken by mouth with a full glass of water or as directed by your doctor. You can view a detailed description of the drug by clicking on the link below...
