Sulfa Methadone

I am currently on 20mg of Methadone and went to the dr yesterday and was prescribed Sulfameth/Trimethoprim. My dr. knows that I am on Methadone from my last appt with her a couple months ago. My morphine sulfate 60mg were stolen, and I hve some methadone 10mg. I was supposed to take the Morphine sulfate 60mg X3 a day. How should I take these methadone 10mg to help me get through until I see My Dr. next week? ## I'd suggest actually calling your doctor to see what you should do. If you're under a treatment contract, taking something else, regardless of the circumstances, without doctor's permission could violate it and result in your getting dismissed as a patient. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Can u take sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160 while on methadone? I once took cipro and went into immediate horrible withdrawal! ## Hello, Sandy! How are you? Yes, as long as your doctor is aware that you're taking both. There is a chance that it may prolong the QT interval of the heart, but it isn't considered to be a dangerous reaction. I go to a methadone program and have for about 4 years. I've recently had the flu which caused me to vomit up my methadone (I get 5 take home bottles per week). Tried taking another bottle and threw up again. I'm feeling sick from not taking it so I took a 60 mg morphine sulfate pill. I took 30mg on Tuesday and 30mg yesterday (Wednesday) Today I missed my 30mg dose and I was wondering is it safe if I take a 10mg Perocet today and will I feel anything? I am in a confusing debate with my ex husband: Which is stronger, 30 mg of morphine sulfate E.R or 10 mg of methadone? ## Methadone is stronger than Morphine, just as an example, if you were taking the 30mgs of Morphine, the equivalent dosage of Methadone would only be 3mgs, so it's a roughly 1mg to 10mg ratio. I take suboxone 12/3 mg once a day. Can I take one 100 mg morphine sulphate with it once a day? ## Hi Rob, According to umm.edu, suboxone shouldn't be taken with any opioids (i.e. morphine), since it can block its effects and potentially send you into immediate withdrawals - accompanied by a number of undesirable side effects such as increased anxiety, insomnia, nausea, difficulty breathing, sweating, cramps, etc. Having read that, it sounds to me like the wisest thing to do would probably be to contact your doctor about alternative ways to manage your pain in the event that suboxone 'or' morphine doesn't get the job done on their own. i have been taking 60mg.morphine sulfate with little relief i just started on methadone hcl 10mg. & found them to be stronger & more effective my wife just believes that it is the change but i am convinced the methadone is stronger who is right? ## It would take 15mgs of Methadone to equal each 60mgs dose of the Morphine, so I'd have to give the win to your wife. My rheumatologist gave me prednesone 10 mg Q.D My Primary (PCP) gave me morphine sulfate 15 mg S.R. T.I.D I recently was on methadone and prednesone, but I believe one cancelled out the other, or so it seemed to me. I am currently taking oxycontin 40 mg and I going from a private insurance plan to a Humana PPO Medicare advantage plan and they don't cover it. Some of the other option they recommend from humana was Methadone, Hydromorphone, Codeine Sulfate, Fentanyal Patch, Morphine, and oxycodone IR. I know Oxycodone is the same active ingredient oxycontin but I also take Oxycodone 15mg for breakthrough pain. It helps somewhat but it does help enough. My good day after taking the medicine and having my spinal cord stimulation implant device on is a 5 but an avg. day is 7.5. To give you a idea what a five to me is I broke both of my arms with one bone poking through was a 5.5 and that is a good day for me. My doctor is very hard to get him to increase my dose. For the last 18 months I have seen a Pain Management Dr. in Pittsburgh Pa. I really like him. When I first started seeing him, I was on Methadone 30mg 3x a day. But had been on it for the last 6 yrs, so it really wasn't working all that great. In Sept. he put me on Opana 40mg 2 x a day. And it kind of helped. It isn't advisable to take them closer together, than the 12 hour dosing, unless your doctor specifically advises you to do so. It could result in your getting too much of the Morphine at once and may result in an overdose. Even though you have been switched to another narcotic, if you stopped the Methadone abruptly, without tapering, then you are likely to experience some withdrawal and rebound effects, which could result in pain that's much worse for a few weeks.
