I am allergic to sulphonamides in antibotic - when I took trimethoprim I got Stevens Johnson Syndrome. I went in hospitla yesterday. Was given morphine for pain and then co-codamol. Last night I felt very sick and dizzy and was kept in hospital this morning an hour an a half after taking more co-codamol i sat up in bed and had all the symptoms of passing out but didn't go fully. My heart was pounding etc. Could there be a link to my allergy as my skin has been itching and my arm burning but not rash as yet. I stopped taking them - doctor withdrew them. ## Hello, Vaness! How are you? I'm not a doctor, but I'm more inclined to think that what you experienced were just side effects from the narcotics. Everything you've listed, including the itching, are known possible side ...

Is citalopram a sulfa drug? I just started this, and I'm starting to feel the tingling and burning in my hands. I'm allergic to sulfa. ## Hello, Bob! How are you? No, this is not a sulfonamide. Citalopram is classified by the FDA as an SSRI antidepressant. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, headache and weight gain. However, it is known that if you're allergic to one medication, there is a definite risk that you will also be allergic to others. Did you experience any other adverse effects?

I was put in the hospital for 7 days come to find out I was allergic to sulfa now im on subuoxon and I cant hardy breathe ## Hello, Juju! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Suboxone is an opiate, so it can cause respiratory depression as a side effect. What dosage are you on? The U.S. FDA classifies it as opiate that is most commonly used to treat drug addiction, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. However, there is a chance you may be allergic to it, as well. Typically, when one is allergic to one medication, they find others that they are also allergic to.

Is it alright to take Bactrim when you are also taking synthroid? ## Hello, Judy! How are you? I didn't find any problems or interactions listed between taking these medications, but it's always best to double check such information to be sure. Bactrim is an antibiotic, so it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Bactrim is Sulfameth. If you are allergic to "Sulfa" drugs, also known as"Sulfonamides", DO NOT take the Antibiotics; BACTRIM, or SEPTRA. Also, the diuretic (fluid) pill LASIX. The blood pressure pill LISINOPRIL has also caused a reaction in some people with Sulfa allergies.

Are you taking or planning on taking all of these, at once? No, that isn't necessary. The doctor wants to change me to Diovan and Hydrochlorothiazide. I am currently on Lisinopril 40mg. I am afraid to change. I am allergic to sulfa drugs. I have had a cold/flu for about 2 months and he thinks Lisinopril may be causing the cough. (this is a new doctor to me). I have been on Lisinopril for 10 years and have had no problems. Not sure what to do. Also Diovan is a tier 4 drug. Lisinopril is a tier 1. ## Hydrochlorothiazide is a sulfonamide, but they don't always cause problems in people with sulfa allergies. Learn more Hydrochlorothiazide details here. I've taken it without a problem, but had a very bad allergic reaction to the antibiotic Bactrim and am listed as being sulfa allergic. I have just had the same reaction to Lisinopril-HCTZ as I've had to sulfa. What else is related? ## There's really too many different types of drugs and manufacturers to pin point every pill that contains sulfa. For future reference I would just clarify with your doctor and/or local pharmacy that you have an allergy to sulfa; this way your current and future prescriptions won't contain any. The link below lists a few medications that notably contain sulfa: Additionally, I think there are other "partial" lists floating around google, if you type in the right search words. I hope this helps!

can I take an over the counter sleep aid while taking sulfameth? ## It would really depend on the specific sleep aid and what it contains. Can you post back with more details, such as the one you usually use? can i take cleocin if am allergic to biaxin pencillin and sulfa drugs? ## Hello, T! How are you? The Cleocin is in a different class, it's a lincosamide antibiotic, so in theory it should be okay. However, there is no way of knowing if you will or will not be allergic to it, too. You should also double check with your doctor and pharmacist, before taking it, to be extra cautious. Is there anything else I can help with?

I'm allergic to Sulpha based drugs, but I am into cooking and wondered if it would be safe for me to try black sea salt? in the descriptions it keeps mentioning it has a sulphur like taste, smell, etc, in it's description, but I can't seem to find out if it's actually sulphur based. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. ## There is a difference between sulfa drugs and actual sulfur. Can you eat egg yolks without a problem? If so, then you are not allergic to sulfur, because they are very high in it. I am also allergic to sulfa drugs, but have no problem with actual sulfur. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thanks for the info, no, I have no problem with eggs, so will be able to actually try the black salt, appreciate the help.

I am allergic to sulfa drugs . Will I be okay with the Glucossmine Sulfate? ## Hi, Zoey! What sulfa drugs are you allergic to? Is it sulfonamides, or general sulfa drugs like Sulfamethoxazole? If that's the case, they aren't the same as a sulfate, but you should double check with your doctor or pharmacist to be careful. ## Thank you very much . I will find out and ask my doctor. ## You can take Sulfate free glucosamnine (glucosmanine Hydrochloride) better than the sulfate one.

Does allopurinol contain any sulfa? ## Based on my research, Allopurinol is not listed as a sulfa-containing drug. NOTE: Allopurinol, however, is regarded as one of the leading causes of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) - a condition that is also linked to many sulfa drugs. Just something I feel more patients should be aware of before taking this medication. I am allergic to sulfa drugs and currently have bronchitis. One of the things prescribed to me is ventolin hfa it says it has albuterol sulfate should I be concerned? ( I did tell the Dr that I was allergic to sulfa drugs.) Two more questions, I used to get really itchy tiny bumps on my back. The doctor never could figure out why, but I started looking at the ingredients of shampoos and saw that most of them had sodium lauryl sulfate. This was before I was ever diagnosed with an allergy to sulfa drugs. Is there a connection with sulfa drugs and sodium lauryl sulfate? If I am allergic to sulfur can I take oxycodone roxy Percocet hydrocodone ## Hello, Cardinal girl! How are you? No, none of what you've listed as sulfa drugs. However, you should be made aware that there is a chance you may be allergic to more medications, even if they aren't sulfa based. That's just how it tends to work, someone allergic to one is prone to eventually finding others that they are also allergic to. The FDA classifies these medications as narcotic analgesics. They carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with?
