I am allergic to sulphonamides in antibotic - when I took trimethoprim I got Stevens Johnson Syndrome. I went in hospitla yesterday. Was given morphine for pain and then co-codamol. Last night I felt very sick and dizzy and was kept in hospital this morning an hour an a half after taking more co-codamol i sat up in bed and had all the symptoms of passing out but didn't go fully. My heart was pounding etc. Could there be a link to my allergy as my skin has been itching and my arm burning but not rash as yet. I stopped taking them - doctor withdrew them. ## Hello, Vaness! How are you? I'm not a doctor, but I'm more inclined to think that what you experienced were just side effects from the narcotics. Everything you've listed, including the itching, are known possible side ...

I have just had the same reaction to Lisinopril-HCTZ as I've had to sulfa. What else is related? ## There's really too many different types of drugs and manufacturers to pin point every pill that contains sulfa. For future reference I would just clarify with your doctor and/or local pharmacy that you have an allergy to sulfa; this way your current and future prescriptions won't contain any. The link below lists a few medications that notably contain sulfa: Additionally, I think there are other "partial" lists floating around google, if you type in the right search words. I hope this helps!

Is it alright to take Bactrim when you are also taking synthroid? ## Hello, Judy! How are you? I didn't find any problems or interactions listed between taking these medications, but it's always best to double check such information to be sure. Bactrim is an antibiotic, so it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Bactrim is Sulfameth. If you are allergic to "Sulfa" drugs, also known as"Sulfonamides", DO NOT take the Antibiotics; BACTRIM, or SEPTRA. Also, the diuretic (fluid) pill LASIX. The blood pressure pill LISINOPRIL has also caused a reaction in some people with Sulfa allergies.

I am allergic to sulfa drugs. Having a hard time finding the right blood pressure medicine. Can you please help me find blood pressure meds that don't contain sulfa ## Hello, Sherrie! How are you? What specific sulfa drug or drugs have you had a reaction to? While many blood pressure medications are related, not everyone that is allergic to a sulfa drug, such as Bactrim, is also allergic to all the rest. I am a good example of that. I had a very bad reaction to Bactrim several years ago, but I am fine with blood pressure and cardiac medications. What blood pressure medications have you tried? The FDA lists the symptoms of an allergic reaction as possibly including swelling, trouble breathing, hives, itchy rash and angioedema. ## Diovan hct, zebeta, hyzaar, bystolic, cardizem, I can ...

The doctor wants to change me to Diovan and Hydrochlorothiazide. I am currently on Lisinopril 40mg. I am afraid to change. I am allergic to sulfa drugs. I have had a cold/flu for about 2 months and he thinks Lisinopril may be causing the cough. (this is a new doctor to me). I have been on Lisinopril for 10 years and have had no problems. Not sure what to do. Also Diovan is a tier 4 drug. Lisinopril is a tier 1. ## Hydrochlorothiazide is a sulfonamide, but they don't always cause problems in people with sulfa allergies. Learn more Hydrochlorothiazide details here. I've taken it without a problem, but had a very bad allergic reaction to the antibiotic Bactrim and am listed as being sulfa allergic. However, it is best to proceed with caution. Have you discussed the issue with your ...

can I take an over the counter sleep aid while taking sulfameth? ## It would really depend on the specific sleep aid and what it contains. Can you post back with more details, such as the one you usually use? Just as an example, there are no interactions listed between the antibiotic Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim) and Diphenhydramine, which is what some of them use. However, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist to be certain. ## we are using spasmo proxyvon and avil, digepamn ,norphin now a days we are leaving this but we have taken this 4yr but not regularly and we have taken nitrosun 10 mg,and marijuna also now 1 week happened that we havent take this drugs. and we are not getting sleep this week.what to do?or we have to use again i dont no what to do and we are not...

Does allopurinol contain any sulfa? ## Based on my research, Allopurinol is not listed as a sulfa-containing drug. NOTE: Allopurinol, however, is regarded as one of the leading causes of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) - a condition that is also linked to many sulfa drugs. Just something I feel more patients should be aware of before taking this medication. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Allopurinol Details I hope this helps to answer your question!

If I am allergic to sulfur can I take oxycodone roxy Percocet hydrocodone ## Hello, Cardinal girl! How are you? No, none of what you've listed as sulfa drugs. However, you should be made aware that there is a chance you may be allergic to more medications, even if they aren't sulfa based. That's just how it tends to work, someone allergic to one is prone to eventually finding others that they are also allergic to. The FDA classifies these medications as narcotic analgesics. They carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with?

What pain meds can I use for joint pain? ## I'm allergic to codine and sulfa drugs. What can I take for lower back pain as well as all other joints. ## Hello, Binky! How are you? Only your doctor can prescribe an appropriate medication. However, there are quite a few options ranging from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, like Meloxicam, to other opiates, such as Oxycodone or Dilaudid. As listed by the FDA, the NSAID are approved to treat pain, fever and swelling, so some people with joint pain do well with them. Their typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and stomach irritation. Opiates are used to treat pain, they carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mou...

Hi, I'm 17 years old and I'm taking 1 tablet of Ferrous Sulfate once a day. But I'm also taking 1 1/2 tablets of Predisone twice a day and along with multiple other dosages of other medicines. Could this be the reason for the churning sick feeling in my stomach? ## I think it largely depends on what all the other medications are that you might be taking with it. Just about all prescription drugs can cause these types of side effects. Based on my research, Ferrous Sulfate does list "constipation" and "stomach upset" as side effects. It also mentions that you should tell your doctor if either of these symptoms are severe or do not go away. The only problem I see with pinpointing the culprit, is that Prednisone also lists this as side effect as well. And I can o...

I was prescribed this antibiotic & Docycycline Hyclate 100mg cap 3days ago for my eczema which got infected (because I was scratching). On the 2nd day I have been taking both meds (BID every 12 hrs for both), I noticed that I developed rash & what looks like hives on my neck. Today, my upper chest has some kind of prickly heat rash like a baby's bum. Do I discontinue these 2 antibiotics? ## Hi Lorna, It's difficult to say which of these medications might be causing the side effects your experiencing. I have blisters on my tongue. I know that I am allergic to the atom sulfur as well as sulfa drugs. Do synthroid or trazodone contain sulfur? ## There are far too many to possibly list them all here. Synthroid, however, contains Levothyroxine and neither it, nor the Trazodone are sulfur based, to my knowledge, but you should check with your pharmacist to be sure, since I don't know what all the inactive ingredients may be. Are your doctor and pharmacist aware of your allergy? Can you post back with more information, such as the company that makes the Trazodone that you take, so I can check it for you? ## Does anyone know if I can use hydrocodone7.5 for break through pain. This is not a listed side effect, however, medications can affect some people differently, so it is possible. Have you spoken to your doctor about this? You should contact them immediately so they can figure out if it is the medication or something else. I have been having knee problems and my doctor says I have slight cartilage damage which is probably due to osteo arthritis. I am not a big fan of meds, but heard that glucosamine sulphate can be helpful in these cases. My main concern is that I have a severe allergy to Sulpha drugs ( the antibiotics ) and was wondering if the two are related in any way. I would hate to have a reaction from it. As well are there any side effects from Glucosamine sulphate. Someone said it can be hard on your stomach. Is this true? Thank you ## Hello, Elle! How are you? It is a different compound and not a sulfa drug like those that usually spark allergies, so it should be fine, but double checking with your doctor would be a great idea. As listed by the FDA, it isn't known to cause many side effects,...

What is the oval shaped pill ME 63 used for? I have a friend that found this pill by her 91 year old Mother's bedside and she is worried that it will harm her Mother. ## To answer your question, Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim is a sulfonamide antibacterial combination that is used in the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections. Although its list of potential side effects makes this drug arguably one of the least desirable antibiotics on the market (in my opinion), all prescription drugs carry certain risk factors. It has poison listed on the label of my bottle of liquid morphine sulfate for intravenous use. It is an outdated bottle, but is it safe to use? ## First never use expired drugs! Secondly liquid morphine is deadly if taken or used improperly so why wouldn't it be considered a poison. ## Jeff is correct. Most medications are considered poisons, if used improperly, in excessive amounts, of by those who shouldn't be taking them. What precise markings are on the label are you talking about, though? Most pharmacies don't use one that just says poison. Morphine is an opiate, so it carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, and dry mouth.
