I have been taking 10 mg/day of Lisinopril for 3 months and have developed a tightening in the chest and flu like symptoms. Within the past 3 weeks I have felt progressively worse and would like to stop. Is it ok to just quit or must I wean myself off? ## Lisinopril is used to help control high blood pressure. That said, most of these medications can cause dangerous rebound effects if you have been on them for a period of time and abruptly stop taking them, this can include increased blood pressure and heart rate, with the risk of heart attack and stroke. The side effects that you are experiencing are normal for this class of medications, you may also experience headache and dizziness. If it is getting worse, however, and not tapering off, you should speak to your doctor immediately abo...

I've been taking lisinopril 20mg for more than 20 years. I have had side effects that come and go, such as coughing, lightheadedness, and dizziness. But now I have lightheadedness and dizziness all the time. Frequent urination, legs are weak, sometimes when I am walking I feel like I am going to pass out; and ED problems. I spoke with my doctor and he told me to stop taking it. I stopped taking it one week ago. My bp is 135/75. My question is how long will these side effects last before they go away? Thanks. ## Hello, Luis! How are you feeling? After being on it for so long, it may take a month, or so, before these effects go away and for you to start feeling better. As reported by the FDA, you may also start experiencing some rebounds effects, such as elevated blood pressure and he...

Hi, my mom was placed on Lisinopril 10mg to lower her HBP. Unfortunately we noticed the dry cough. With the approval of the Doc., she was placed on Nifedipine 20mg to be taken two times daily. Sadly, its been two weeks since she stopped using Lisinopril but the cough is still there(it just subsided a little). She is also managing diabetes. Is it alright for her to use cough meds? ## Hi, Nikky! How are you? Sorry about your mothers cough. The Nifedipine usually doesn't cause it as often, but it can cause a cough, as well, in some people that take it. Has she consulted her doctor, again? Learn more Nifedipine details here. On a cough medication, I can't answer you, without knowing the specific ingredients in it, since some of them can elevate blood pressure and heart rate. She shou...

Can some one tell me what to expect when weaning off of 20 mg Lisinopril...am down to 15 mg now no effects but now trying to go to 12.5 and today is first day and seem to be having some effects of being hot and feeling like i want to panic. I have been on it for 14 months for blood pressure . can any one advise how to wean off I just plan on 2.5 mg cuts every 10 days or so unless I get better advice ? ## Why are you stopping it? Has your doctor approved your doing so? If you were taking it for high blood pressure, you shouldn't stop without a physician's approval, because if it's the only thing controlling your blood pressure, it will become elevated, again, even if you taper off of it slowly. Are you monitoring your blood pressure and heart rate?

I have just been diagnosied with neuropathy side effects of the blood pressure pill do effect blood flow to hands and feet mainly my feet are number a.lot the time do I need to stop these meds ## Hello, Andy! How are you? You should not stop these medications, unless your doctor approves of your doing so. Stopping abruptly creates the risk of your developing dangerous elevated blood pressure and heart rate, which could result in heart attack, stroke, or congestive heart failure, as reported by the NIH. Who told you that the neuropathy was caused by these medications?

I've been on 5mg Lisinopril for almost 3 months and have lost 6-8 lbs. without trying. I was only about 180lbs. to begin with. Will the weight loss eventually stop or should I stop the medication? Thanks....Tony ## Lisinopril is most commonly used to help lower blood pressure. Have you spoken to your doctor about this, yet? The weight loss is not considered a normal side effect, but a rare and unusual one. Normally, most side effects start to wear off in 4 to 6 weeks of use. It's very important to involve your doctor in the decision you make about the drug, since the weight loss could also be caused by something else. ## Thank you for your reply. Rest assured I am not stopping or changing any meds without consulting my doc. Tony

I've been on metoprolol for about 2 months now went to er for anxiety and of coarse my bp was high they put me on metoprolol but im on lisinopril 10 mgs a day since taking metoprolol I've felt awful just sluggish and weak tired aanxiety up can't eat ot sleep just so tired I quit taking it yesterday none today the doctor said I could any more info this please reply ## Hello, Tammie! How are you doing? A sudden withdrawal from the Metoprolol may cause some elevation to your heart rate and blood pressure, as listed by the FDA, but the Lisinopril should help keep it from hitting dangerous levels. Thus, you should be able to stop, as your doctor instructed. But make sure to seek medical attention, if your blood pressure and heart rate do start to go too high. Is there anything el...

I have come to think the extreme anxiety depression heart palpitations and tingling in my left fingers are related to the 20 mg lisinopril I started just over a year ago. I also take amlodpine and warfarin ...I cant believe it took me so long to suspect this. I will speak to my doctor but also want to see what those who quit lisinopril have to say about the weaning period and side affects while cutting down and quitting . Please advise. This is horrible beyond anything I have ever experienced. Please help if you can ! ## Sorry, I just saw this post with more details. In this case, since you are on several medications, it is hard to say which one might be causing your symptoms, if they are due to a combination of them, or if they may be unrelated. As to stopping Lisinopril, sometimes if ...

I've been on Lisimopril for 4 months and all my hair is falling out I'm so sad by this. Im stopping the meds and seeing my doc. I'm searching for a natural way to control your BP. Will my hair grow back and what alternatives can the doctors give me. I'm very scared and worry about my hair loss and side affects from stopping the meds. ## Hello, Joanna! How are you doing? I strongly urge you not to stop it cold turkey, because doing so creates the risk of dangerously elevated blood pressure and heart rate, which could lead to health problems, such as heart attack or stroke, as reported by the FDA. And yes, there are other options available that your doctor can prescribe, over 100 of them, actually, so I can't possibly list them all. It's really just a matter of tri...

I just started on 5mg of Lisinopril. I feel a little tired while exercising but nothign else so far - how long does it take side effects to start if you're going to have them? ## You should start experiencing them within a few days after you start the medication and they will usually last anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks, which is about the same amount of time that it takes your body to get used to the medication. Learn more Lisinopril details here. From personal experience, the side effect I can tell you to keep any eye out for is the dry cough. When I was taking it, it took about 2 months for that to start and nothing relieves it, other than stopping the medication and switching to something else. The problem with it though, is that the cough is similar to the one you may get at the sta...

I had been taking 2 tablets of Lisinopril 20 + 12.5 mg HCTZ for almost 20 years. I'm now 60 years old and since my BP is under control, I asked my doctor to take me off the HCTZ. It's been only a week now and I have noticed swelling in my feet and ankles along with a reddish rash. I previously had no side effects from the HCTZ other than dry mouth and skin and frequent urination. Does anyone know if gradually decreasing the amount of HCTZ rather than just stopping abruptly would be a better alternative or if I'm just destined to take HCTZ for the rest of my life? ## Your doctor just had you stop this medication abruptly? If so, then yes, that's likely what's causing the problem, because it has been known to cause rebound effects, especially if you were taking it for ...

I have been out of lisinopril for a couple of weeks, and have noticed my feet are swelling up, and was wondering if not taking it could cause the swelling. ## Hello, Donna! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having. Suddenly stopping such a medication can cause rebound effects, which may include dangerously elevated blood pressure, heart rate, and peripheral edema as you're experiencing, all of which could lead to heart attack, stroke or congestive heart failure. You need to see your doctor to have this checked out, as soon as possible, and in the future, be careful not to run out of your medication. You should always keep a supply on hand and make sure to pick up a refill, before running out. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was taking 10MG of LISINopril one time per day. I ended up with a cough. My doctor changed it to 25 MG of Losartan and now my blood pressure has gone back up. Are my new dozes equal to or less than my previous dosage. I do not understand the conversion of MG from drug to drug. ## Hello, Mike! How are you? How long ago did you make the switch? There may be a slight rebound effect from stopping the Lisinopril and starting the new one waiting for it to reach its full level of efficacy. Or it could be that the Losartan doesn't work for you and you may need to switch to something else. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Losartan as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension. How high are your current readings? ## Hi, thanks for asking, I ...

I recently had a bad reaction to Lisinoprill, Angioedema Edema. I just started taking 5 mg of Bystolic, I monitor my bp and it went from an average of 142/76, to 170/86, also my pulse rate went from 66 to 45 on average. Only been on this for 3 days now. Thinking of stopping. Anyone have similar reaction? ## Hello, Patrick! How are you doing? I'm sorry about the problems that you're having. You might be experiencing a bit of a rebound effect from going off of the Lisinopril and switching to the Bystolic, it could take a few weeks for things to balance out and for you to see if it's going to work for you. Typical side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain and dry cough. Have you consulted your doctor? They may want to prescribe a high...

Just started on Losartan , previously was on lisinopril that didnt do anything to lower BP. After 3 days on Losartan I noticed my resting heart rate in now 100+… previously was 65 to 70 on any given day.. I was told it could take 2 to 3 weeks for Losartan to fully be in my system to see a change. Will my heart rate get lower once the med takes effect or is something wrong? ## Hello, Dom! How are you? The higher heart rate could be due to stopping the Lisinopril, if you stopped abruptly and switched to the Losartan, it may have caused a rebound effect that can include elevated heart rate and elevated blood pressure. However, it is always best to check with your doctor to be sure. If the Losartan works for you, you should eventually see an improvement in your heart rate. My heart ra...

I am currently taking 6different medications for my high blood pressure. I feeel like this is a bit much and would like to cut back. Is there anyway that I can stop taking some of these medications? I have to take medications a day and I would like to eliminate some of these medications. ## Hello, I would speak with your healthcare provider before stopping any of your current medications. Take linsopril 5mg1a day bupropion sr 150mg 2a day zonisamide 100mg 4a day birth control 1a day. Lost close to 20 lbs befor linsopril, but haven't been on it a month yet. Seem to have stalled out. Weight is VERY important issue (please don't ask why :) any thoughts? Body need to adjust? Pain/ can't workout like used to ## How long have you been taking the birth control? The reason I'm asking is because if you've been on it for awhile and just recently started the Lisinopril for blood pressure elevation, there's a chance that the contraceptives are what's causing the elevation and you may not need to take another medication. There's a chance it could be resolved by just stopping the hormonal contraceptives. Depending on how high it is, you may need a blood...
