Stop Taking Simvastatin

I've been taking Simvastatin 40 mg for a year and my cholesterol in below normal for my age and weight (130). Can I quit taking it cold turkey or do I need to ease off of it gradually? The only side effect I've had is the joint pain and not much energy. ## Hi pete, Although Simvastatin can be cold-turkeyed, I would still urge you to let your doctor know before you stop taking it, since I have read a few reports of terrible leg cramping and cardiac problems a couple weeks after stopping it. Everyone reacts differently, so there's no telling whether or not you'd even be likely to experience such symptoms. But if you want to play it safe you can always taper down by taking a fraction of the dose over a period of a couple weeks or so. Has anyone else here had success in stop...

Has anyone experienced withdrawal symptoms after going off Simvatatin? ## Hello, Sylvia! How are you? You may experience withdrawal symptoms from stopping any medication that you've taken for a long period of time, because your body got used to having that chemical added regularly. They just aren't the same as the severe and dangerous withdrawals that one my experience from narcotics, or drug abuse. The FDA classifies this medication as a statin that is used to help lower cholesterol and the withdrawal effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, fever, chills and aches. Is there anything else I can help with?

I am on Simvastatin 20 and continually worry about side effects to liver and other organs. I am getting severe leg pains and feel tired all the time with no energy along with a few other things that I am not sure about. I have only been on them for 3 months. Had a chol level of 6.4. I am 63 years old. Other meds I take are Oroxine for thyroid and Coversyl for High BP. I have been halving the tablets some times and other times not taking them at all. My heart has been checked and is fine. This medication REALLY worries me. My hubby has also just been put onthem.Any ideas or suggestions would help. Has anyone heard of Arginine supplement instead of taking chol medication ???????? ## Hi Shannon, According to WebMD, arginine is good for lowering cholesterol. However, there currently is no d...

What exactly is the harm or danger if I were to reduce my daily Simvastatin dosage from 10 to 5 mg? I have been taking it for several years. I am 80. My total cholesterol is 156; LDL 64 and HDL 39 at last reading a year ago. I have recently lost 17 pounds -184 to 167- through eating less and healthily, and daily exercise. I feel fine. ## Hello, Billy! How are you? Way to go on taking care of your health!!! You should double check with your doctor, before reducing the dosage, but there shouldn't really be any harm in it. The problem usually arises if someone just stops taking it abruptly, because that can cause a rebound effect that may elevate their cholesterol levels too much. Learn more Simvastatin details here. Do you see your doctor regularly?

does coQ10 help with the itching? ## Because itching is listed as a "serious" side effect of Simvastatin on government webpages, it is recommend that you contact your doctor immediately as opposed to using other means of controlling the itching. Ref: nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a692030.html#side-effects It could be due to a serious allergic reaction; in which case you'd essentially have to stop taking what's causing the reaction in the first place before noticing any results. NOTE: The MayoClinic also states that Coenzyme Q10 may cause rashes and itching of the skin in some people taking the supplement. That said, it's possible that this may not even be a good option after all. I hope this info helps to answer your question!

For at least a year or more I've been taking pristiq (generic) and simvastatin at the same time. I felt that the pristiq was no longer working because I was so very tired all of the time. It dawned on me that maybe there was an interaction between taking simvastatin and pristiq at the same time. I took them separately at least 3 hours apart and today have more energy and as the day wore on kept felling better. I know there isn't supposed to be an interaction if you take them together, but I can't help but think there is. Has anyone else taken them at the same time and then stopped taking them together and had better results with not feeling so tired all of the time and listless? ## Hi Karen, I just wanted to add another perspective or insight into your understanding that the...

For about three years there was a "hell" for me to walk because of the side effects from Simvastatin. Got from my doctor in 2008 prescription on Simvastatin, one 10 mg pill / day. My cholesterol at the time measured over 4. After about half a year, the dose was increased to 20 mg since my cholesterol level only increased. At the same time my feet started to hurt but neither the doctor or myself realized that this was Simvastatin connected. At the same time I also got problem with a"spur" under one heal. (How I got rid of the "spur" without surgery, is another story) From the first Simvastatin pill I swallowed, the lips tickled for a minute or two, then it stopped. Now I marvel why did I not respond to this clear signal at the time, but I did not. I had not the ha...

I've been taking simvastatin for about 4 months and have had a really bad itchy skin reaction, but nothing is relieving it. I do not see this posted as a side effect. Not using grapefruit juice, what else might it be interacting with to cause this great discomfort? ## I've been on simvastatin for over a year. Several months I contracted an itch. My PCP doesn't think it is the medicine, but I do. I feel like bugs are crawling under my skin. I have stopped taking it for a few days and the itch has subsided. I'm going to stay of the pills for a week then try them again and see if the itch comes back. If so, I'm telling my doctor he has to prescribe something else. BTW, I don't drink grapefruit juice. ## Many people just have problems and suffer these types of side e...

Hi. My mum is a very fit 78 yr old. She has been on a very low dose of simvastatins for 17 years. She had minor aches and pains but still fit enough to walk 5 or 6 miles a day, mow her garden and dig vegetable patch. She has stopped taking the stations and is now in extreme pain... Cannot raise her arms, walks only one mile a day and feels tired. She is going to as for a blood test but has anyone heard of side effects of coming off stations? Will this pass? Any suggestions re help? This could be PMR ..... Any advice really appreciated. ## Hello, Clare! How is you mother doing? It's difficult to say what may be causing the problem, it could be PMR, or something else. Has she consulted her doctor, yet? At her age, you really shouldn't just let this go, it needs to be checked out.

My mother is a cancer survivor and currently taking Femara. She also takes Meprobamate, Simvastatin, Fluticasone Propionate, Plavix, Omeprazole, Coreg, Digoxin, Zestril, Zyrtec and Aleve. I am shocked at how many drugs being prescribed by several different doctors. How can I makes sense of all of this with so many doctors involved. Are there any reactions I should be concerned with. Thank you. ## I am also a cancer survivor. Your mother needs to get clean of all these meds unless she has high blood presure. She is doing more harm then good. She needs to detox, eat well and step aside from all these advertised drugs. ## No one should stop any prescribed medication, without their doctor's approval. I had a mild heart atack and I was prescribed a cocktail of drugs, which made me feel like a zombie, I was extremely tired, feeling sick, couldn't barely walk: ticagrelor 90 mg., simvastatin 40 mg., amlodipine, ramipril 2.5 mg., eleprenone(Inspra) 25 mg. I discarded the amplodipine- why the dictors prescribed it together with the ramipril, if both do the same job and both have bad side effects? I also stopped the simvastatin- so far for a week and I feel better, but another doctor now replaced with with atorvastatin 20 mg. which I will have to start taking, but this one is also known for bad side effects and I was also prescribed a beta blocker- Egiloke 25 mg (Metrprolol tartrate) as replacement of the amplodimine. I am worried about the side effects: my colesterols levels and blood...

Brown, round ## what is the namr of med ## Simvastatin (Generic for Zocor) 20mg A colesterol lowering medication made by Dr Reddy's Lab ## I was concerned that the pharmacist made an error filling my prescription, since my zocor (simvastatin) looked completely different from before. Why is it that taking pepto bismo causes me to have frequent urination just about every hour at night time? I also take Lipitor, Avapro, Metformin, Januvia and Actos. ## Lipitor interacts with antacids. My father has the same problem, plus nausea and stomach problems. Going to doctor to try and get him off it. Liptor from what I've been studying is not a very good, or useful, drug for most people. From what I've read, it only helps 1-3% of people. Very bad side effects too!!!! ## I started taking metformin 500 about 1 mth ago and I'm stating to pee a lot more often and it burns most of the time .. I'm also taking simvastatin20 andlevothyroxine88 but ive been taking the 2 for 2 yrs and never bothered me.. it hurts bad sometimes when I urinate ... should I stop cut them in...

I eat very clean, rarely at restaurants. I have been on Linzess (Lazy bowels) for years, been on synthroid (subclinical hypothyroidism) for several months now along with simvastatin for high cholesterol (hereditary). All blood work shows perfect numbers. I have done several variations with my macros monitored by a trainer. I have not been able to drop any weight in 3 years. No one understands, not even the doctors. I am a personal trainer my self and work out 5-6 days a week. I’m about to stop all prescribed meds because I don’t know if they may be causing the issue. I feel like I’ve been beating my head against a brick wall! Any suggestions? ## Synthroid has been known to cause increased appetite, but both the Linzess, and the Simvastatin are known to cause weight los...

My Mother is 96 y.o. diagnosed of Chronic Stable Angina, of AODM at age 80 with essential hypertension. She has a recent episode of lung infection treated with decongestant and antibiotic. She is on multiple meds. such as Vastarel MR, Pritor Plus, Simvastatin, Neurobion, Minidiab. At such age could these meds. be cut down gradually to substitute with alternative therapy? Or which drug should be cut out of her med. arsenal? ## At her age and with such health conditions, it is best to consult her doctor and let him make any adjustments that may be necessary. The Vastarel, which contains Trimetazidine and the Pritor Plus, which contains Telmisartan and Hydrochlorothiazide, can both cause severe rebound effects, if they are stopped abruptly, which could put her life in danger.
