I stopped taking it because I could not get to the pharmacy. I gained 5 pounds in one day!! ## Hello, Abernathy! How are you? Yes, that can happen, if you stop taking it suddenly, due to rebound fluid retention, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience edema, elevated blood pressure and elevated heart rate. In the future, it would be best to pick up your refill early, to avoid running out. Have you had this checked out by your doctor? Fluid retention can lead to congestive heart failure, which is a very dangerous condition.

I've been taking it for about three months. My hair started falling out and now I have to stop taking it. I take other blood pressure meds that don't have that effect. ## Yes, that is a known side effect of this medication, according to FDA reports. It can also cause other side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and dehydration. There are other medications in this class that you can try to see if they may not cause you to experience the same issue. I know I'd be freaking out if I lost my hair. What other medications do you take?

My AC1 level went from 5.8 to 6.0 to 6.4 every six months and my Doctor stated i was pre diabetic. I researched my medication and found that HCTZ causes AC! levels to rise. I told my doctor and she disagreed. I asked that I be taken off HCTZ for 3 months and see what my AC1 level was. She agreed and yesterday my test results was ONE full point lower 5.4 versus 6.4. I am awaitng a response from my Doctor. Not everyone is the same but if you are on HCTZ and your AC1 level begins to increase I suggest to stop it for 3 months and see if your results are the same. ## Hello, Jim! How are you? Very smart of you to do the research on your own. Your doctor should do some more checking, because the research is out there showing that the Thiazide diuretics, such as this one, can cause that in some...

I am going to be in a clinical trial for my CRPS, my testing turned out good, blood, urine, etc. Then I was told to check with my doctor about getting off the hydrochlorothiazide. The medical board said there was torsaden in the med and it can cause heart problems. Is this the case, my nephrologist wasn't aware of this, but she said I could stop taking it right away. ## Are you sure they said Torsaden? I can't find anything listed in the FDA, or NIH databases under that name. Hydrochlorothiazide is the active ingredient in this medication, it is most commonly used to help remove excess fluid from the body to treat conditions, such as congestive heart failure, edema, and high blood pressure. Did they possible mention Thiazide? Since that is the class this medication is classified...

Drug interaction Want to no if I can take these 4 potassium pills for 2 days with my other daily medications ## Hello, Mare! How are you? As long as your doctor has approved it, then yes, they can be taken together. The FDA classifies potassium as a supplement and it can cause stomach pain and nausea, so it should be taken with food. The more pressing question, I think, is if your potassium is low, why do they still have you on the Hydrochlorothiazide? It is a diuretic and well known to cause potassium loss. Stopping it and switching to a different one might easily solve the problem. You may want to ask your doctor about it. Typical side effects to it may also possibly include nausea, headache, dehydration and increased urination. ## in the morning I take Glimepiride 2 mg, Amlodipine-be...

I am 55 year old woman. I have been taking Cardace 2.5 mg for the past 1 year. I get severe coughing bouts 4 to 5 times a day and then it stops. Has anyone observed such a side effect of Cardace? ## Which one are you taking, Cardace or Cardace-H? They both contain Ramipril, but the Cardace-H also includes Hydrochlorothiazide and, if this is the one you're taking, then the coughing might be due to some dehydration occurring from the Hydrochlorothiazide. After 1 dose of 25 mg hydrochlorothiazide I began experiencing an elevated heart rate (97-121 resting). After my 2nd dose I developed hives. I called the doctor's office on a Friday afternoon, spoke with a nurse, but no one called back. I stopped taking it 2 days ago. My heart rate continues to be in the 100-120 range. How long before this side effect wears off? ## Hello, Sandie! I am sorry about the issues you've experienced. Has there been any change? Do you still have hives? It could take awhile for such symptoms to go away, according to FDA reports. Those can be symptoms of an allergic reaction, which means you may need to try a different medication. Is this the only one you are currently taking?

My doctor told me to stop taking hctz after being on it for 7+ years on 2-2-17 because I was feeling dizzy and I had a seizure. My neurologist put me on Vimpat for seizures on 2-3. Hctz worked very well for my joints and especially my knees after 3 knee surgeries. What can I take to help my burning knees while taking vimpat? I have tried 6 ibuprofen per day but they do not work that well. No problem with peeing without hctz the diuretic I was taking. Do I need a diuretic for edema or a joint pain med which don't work. Help! I am 60 and female. ## If the Hydrochlorothiazide helped with joint pain, then it stands to reason that you may be experiencing fluid retention in your joints. No, it is not a good idea to just stop taking them, that could actually be very dangerous. If you abruptly stop them, it could cause a rebound effect that may cause your blood pressure and heart rate to go very high, which could put you in life threatening danger. Additionally, if it is the only thing keeping your blood pressure at more normal levels, it will start to go up again, if you're no longer taking the medication. Learn more Losartan details here. I was taking Losartan / HCT tab 100-12.5 for high blood pressure. I asked for a refill and was sent Losartan tab 100mg. What is the difference? No HCT AND 12.5? Is it OK that I take this? Thank you for your help. Tom ## You still need to take it, unless your doctor instructs you not to, because stopping these types of medications abruptly can result in a dangerous rebound effect that can include severely elevated blood pressure and heart rate. However, you do need to contact your doctor and the pharmacy, because if they provided you one with the 12.5mgs of Hydrochlorothiazide, then they gave you the wrong medication. Have you contacted the pharmacy, yet?

Now that my blood pressure is well under control, is there any harm in continuing these medications? ## While there are always risks associated with using any medication long-term, the risks to you are far greater if you stop taking them and let your blood pressure get out of control. Has your doctor been running occasional blood tests to check your liver and kidney function? If those tests show no abnormalities and the medications are still working for you, then there is no need to switch or change your regimen, unless your doctor advises you to do otherwise.
