Sorbitol (/s(r)btl/), less commonly known as glucitol (/lustl/), is a sugar alcohol with a sweet taste which the human body metabolizes slowly. It can be obtained by reduction of glucose, which changes the converted aldehyde group (−CHO) to a primary alcohol group (−CH2OH). Most sorbitol is made from potato starch, but it is also found in nature, for example in apples, pears, peaches, and prunes.[3] It is converted to fructose by sorbitol-6-phosphate 2-dehydrogenas...

My husband has been taking niquitin gum, about twelve daily and has been suffering frequent loose bowel movements. I think this may be due to Surbiton but he doesn't believe me, any advice or confirmation that this could be the cause of the symptoms ## Hello, Lesley! How is your husband doing? And yes, sorbitol can do that, it has actually even been used as a laxative in higher amounts. But in people that chew a lot of sugar free gum that contains it, sorbitol has been known to cause severe diarrhea with rapid weight loss. He should double check with his doctor to ascertain if it is the cause, but there's a very good chance that it is. Are there any other questions or concerns? ## Thanks for your reply. My husband has been chewing a lot of gum lately to combat nicotine withdrawa...

I am so frustrated with drug companies adding sugar alcohols like sorbitol and mannitol in medicines. I have been taking Prilosec for gastritis for about 10 months. My doctor asked that the pharmacist give me an rx (for gastritis) that does not contain sorbitol. I have been taking the Prilosec for over 1 month and I am still having my symptoms. I just check the ingredients and it contains mannitol which is just like sorbitol. WHY is this allowed in medicine. There are a huge number of people (especially those with irritable bowel syndrome) who are becoming sicker because sorbitol and mannitol causes gastritis issues with them and others like me who get extremely sick (and dehydrated) with just a little bit of this! It is extremely dangerous for young children and the elderly. How can I ...

I live in Indonesia and unfortunately, the labels here are not as complete as it would be in other countries. I am currently taking - 1. Sangobion (Ferrous Gluconate, Manganese, Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Vit C, Folic Acid, Vit B, Sorbitol), 2. Enervon-C Multivitamins, 3. Evening Primrose Oil and 4. Levothyroxine. I think the EPO is gluten-free, but I am not sure of the rest. I would appreciate your feedback as I am new at this and I would hate to have gluten hidden in my vitamins / medicine while I avoid all the foods that I used to love. :( Thank you in advance!

Does Cheratussin AC contain any gluten ingredients, among other drugs? ## According to DailyMed, Cheratussin AC contains the following INACTIVE ingredients: - alcohol - caramel - citric acid - FD&C red #40 - flavor - glycerin - menthol racemic - purified water - saccharin sodium - sodium benzoate - sorbitol solution The manufacturer is Par (now owned by Endo), NDC 0603-1075. I don't believe any of those ingredients would contain gluten, although I don't know what is contained in their "flavor". As to other vitamins and medications, one would need to list specifics in order to look up the inactive ingredients and help determine whether there are any gluten-containing compounds. Update June 13, 2019: I called Par at (800) 828-9393, option 2 - and asked whether Cheratus...
