I had a sleep study done. The doctor said I had sleep apnea but not the kind where the tounge blocks the airway. He said my brain actually cuts off at times during sleep. Has anyone else ever heard of this. If so can this be treated or can it be fatal ## This is not a post, it was suggested that I give more information since there has been no response to my original question. When I was still a fetus, the doctors told my mother that she would have to remian in bed for the last 6 months of her pregnancy. They told her if she did this that they still could not guarantee a live birth or a baby born without birth defects. She smoked througout her pregnancy against the advice of the doctors. When I was born, I was 21 inches long, but less than 5lbs. There were no apparant physical defects ex...

I was placed on 150 MG of Nuvigil 6 days ago as major sleep apnea causes me to fall asleep at my desk or while driving. The second day I felt wide awake all day. The last 4 days I feel no benefits from the dosage. Does it take time to build the drug up in your system or do I need a higher dose right up front. ## Yes, it can take time to reach its full level of effectiveness in your body, so it's best to give it about 4 weeks, before deciding whether or not this dosage works for you, unless your doctor advises otherwise. The FDA classifies this medication as a stimulant, so it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, anorexia, appetite loss, nervousness and insomnia. Is there anything else I can help with?

Does Gabapentin enhance sleep apnea? ## Hi Mare - By "enhance", are you asking whether Gabapentin increases sleep apnea, or whether it helps to treat it? ## I meant increases. Thanks ## I found a research study on PubMed titled "Gabapentin acutely increases the apnea-hypopnea index in older men: data from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study." You can read through what they say, but they ultimately concluded "gabapentin worsened sleep breathing acutely compared with placebo". Note that it was not a longer term clinical trial so more research is warranted. A longer version of the study is also published at: Hope this helps! ## Thanks Roy. I will check it out.

Greetings to all, My brother has sleep apnea for years. He suffered a heart attack two years ago. He was prescribed Vasotec which he is currently taking. His sleep apnea has worsened and he sleeps for 14 hours per day. He recently started using the cpap machine for his obstructive sleep apnea. Does Vasotec cause sleep apnea or make it worse if it is a pre-existing condition? I hope that someone can answer this question. Many thanks Jazzy ## Vasotec contains the active ingredient Enalapril and yes, it is known that ACE inhibitors can cause coughing and airway inflammation that can cause, or worsen apnea. Has he consulted his doctor? He may need to try a different medication.

Will this product enhance or hinder sleep for a person with Sleep Alnea? ## Have you consulted your doctor? Since RemTyme is an over the counter supplement, not a prescription medication, its side effects and possible interactions with medications and medical conditions have not been studied. ## I am looking for a reliable source from which to buy Remtyme

I have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, but since my stroke in 2009 I am also having attacks of central apnea - I just stop breathing when asleep or resting flat on my back. I might add that CPAP has not helped me at all for obstructive apnea - to such an extent that the insurance co. took it away when they looked at the data stored therein. Acetazolamide is used off label to treat central sleep apnea and altitude sickness, since it seems to enhance the body's ability to maintain it's usual absorption of oxygen. So my question is this: Is there some kind of law that prevents average doctors from prescribing drugs for non FDA approved uses? Or is it insurance companies? What kind of doctor would I need to go to be treated with this drug or some other respiratory stimu...

Hi, Do anyone know the accommodation for college student with sleep apnea? Thank you, ## I really think that in such a case you are going to need to consult with someone at the college in question, because it may depend on the severity of the apnea and how much it disables you. They may have a coordinator that can help you schedule classes and tests during the times of day that you are at your best times of awareness. Do to the possibility of the waking/snoring cycles disturbing a roommate, there may also have to be special considerations made for that. Have you checked into the disability policies of the colleges you are checking into?

I have for a month now experienced pain in my left side around and under my lower rib cage to the point my husgand cant lay his arm around me at night. Cat scan did not pick up anything in that area but did pick up ovarian cysts. I do however have sleep apnea but am allergic to the machine and latex. What is the benefit of my taking lyrica and is there a generic equivalent. I do not have good insurance as I explained to my Dr. and even w/ins this is $75.oo for the low dose and he wanted me to gradually increase it. Is there another option? ## Elizabeth - your symptoms sound exactly like mine but for me it's on the right side. I've been taking Lyrica for 2 years along with pretty high doses of narcodics. I'm not sure if it's helping or not. But since I've left the Bay...

My mother is 51 years old Well over 100 pounds over weight She takes about 2mg a day of Clonazepam for her anxiety and panic attacks.. she has a high stress job She also is a heavy drinker: drinks 2 bottles of white wine every night She snores very loud and heavy, makes random gargle and choking noises, and stops breathing for 10 seconds or more How high risk of death is this? I read taking Clonazepam and have sleep apnea untreated can cause her to stop breathing completely because less h20 gets to her brain. I also read that alcohol and Clonazepam mixed together when sleeping can cause her to stop breathing because they work on the same brain receptor (GABA) which again, causes less h20 to her brain. Thanks for your help.. I really need it for her... ## O2 is actually what you want to ...

What causes someone to awake in a frightened and confused state from a nap or from sleeping? ## Hello, Missy! How are you? A nightmare can do that, some medications, stress, alcohol, illegal drugs, illness… there are many reasons that this may happen, according to the NIH. How often has it been happening? Were there nightmares involved? Does the person have sleep apnea? Are they on any medications? Do they drink frequently?

I was wondering if any one has had surgey for sleep apnea and what was the sucess of surgey.1B74 ## You can find a doctor to do any operation, according to the well known maxim that to the man with a hammer, every problem begins to look like a nail !:-} Seriously though, if you can swallow your tongue while reclining, and you also have a serious overbite then surgery may help - or not! Ask the surgeon hard questions, and if he seems at all evasive, or contradicts himself, then run - don't walk - away. Since CPAP doesn't work for me I am looking into the use of removable dental appliances and drugs for apnea rather than surgery. My first problem is to find a dentist specializing in treating apnea. This is not easy since the town I live in has a fulltime population of about five t...

I have A-fib, sleep apnea, on 40 mg Furosemide and 25 mg Toprol lX and cannot take coumadin because I am a bleeder and I feel terrible. What should I do. ## How long have you been taking them? There are quite a few reasons here that you may feel so horrible. One possibility is that it's due to the Furosemide, since it is a diuretic that removes fluid from the body. If you aren't making sure to take in enough fluid each day, you may be dehydrated. Learn more Furosemide details here. The Toprol contains the active ingredient Metoprolol, which is a beta blocker and they are very well known to cause some annoying side effects in some people that take them. anything new for persistent insomnia? I've tried sleep apnea clinics, various over the counter drugs..I have RLS so that complicates things. I can sleep with Ambien but would prefer something not addicting. ## Hello, Cynthia! How are you? Have you ever tried Trazodone? It's a type of antidepressant and many doctors have been prescribing it to help people with sleep issues, since drowsiness is one of its predominant side effects. The FDA lists the others as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and dry mouth. It's an idea to ask your doctor about, since only they can help you decide what is safe for you to try. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I have fibromyalgia, as well as sleep apnea, so maybe this is more complicated. I am 43. I was on testosterone shots, but felt like my chest was getting congested on them and I was gaining weight too much. The doctor also said that he thought injections causes heart attacks and switched me to Androgel. Since starting Androgen, my libido has went from about 30% of what it should be to about 1%, barely anything. I also am dizzy, have headaches, and extremely fatigued. Can Androgel cause that in some people? It's almost like a sinus infection but I'm not sure that it really is. My doctor suggested switching to axiron. It is possible for Androgel to cause bad fatigue and dizziness or lightheadedness? ## Hello, Brett! How are you? I'm not a doctor, but what I can tell you is that...

I take an older antipsychotic and in addition have sleep apnea. Nuvigil 250 mg 2 times a day makes me feel like a new person, yet most doctors are too timid to prescribe anything beyond what it says on the box. I feel it's actually way more dangerous to be sleepy and driving around saying and doing dumb things, but I can't seem to get any MD's to think even a little bit 'outside the box'. Off-label they can write for whatever strength they want. ## Hello, Based on my research, Nuvigil is a federally controlled substance because it has the potential to be abused or lead to dependence. (250 mg) is the highest dose of Nuvigil and is usually prescribed for oral administration once a day. Since the dose you're comfortable with is 2 (250 mg) pills a day that probably m...

I just was prescribed 150 MG to help with my daily sleepiness resulting from my battle with sleep apnea. I have been on the med about 6 days and see no reaction good or bad. I have read so much about how much different the side effects are on folks and the benefit / no benefit from a variety of patients using it. Is this drug just a roll of the dice and when should I feel any effect from the med? I read it deters hunger but I have seen no decrease in my appetite thus far. I need to lose weight as a side benefit. Any hope for that? Am I to expect in effect on libido? ## Hello, Alex! How are you? I suffer of apnea during sleep and cronically to face the syntoms of excessive daytime sleeping i must to take modafinil, but this drug unfortumately give tolerance for neuro adaption , there is a way to reduce Tolerance In Order Not Increase The Dosage Of Modafinil?. I believe that the key is in CYP3A4, but i am not a neuroscientist. Some suggestions? THANKS ## I am also not a doctor or neuroscientist. However, from what I know, some doctors help their patients achieve this by having them take time off of taking such medications, or by occasionally switching to a different medication for a period of time. Doing this helps prevent your body from building up a tolerance to it. Learn more Modafanil details here. Have you tried any of the other stimulant medications? If so, did you have an...
