I've been taking Simvastatin 40 mg for a year and my cholesterol in below normal for my age and weight (130). Can I quit taking it cold turkey or do I need to ease off of it gradually? The only side effect I've had is the joint pain and not much energy. ## Hi pete, Although Simvastatin can be cold-turkeyed, I would still urge you to let your doctor know before you stop taking it, since I have read a few reports of terrible leg cramping and cardiac problems a couple weeks after stopping it. Everyone reacts differently, so there's no telling whether or not you'd even be likely to experience such symptoms. But if you want to play it safe you can always taper down by taking a fraction of the dose over a period of a couple weeks or so. Has anyone else here had success in stop...

odor ## I'm sorry, are you referring to the tablets as having an odor or do they cause you to smell something funny when you take them? Some medications, since they are basically just chemicals, do have a funny odor to them, this is not unusual.

My husband was taking generic 40mg Simvastatin made by Accord Healthca. They are oval brick red with S 6 on side 1. Can we cut them in half to get 20mg dose. His Dr wrote a new prescription for 20mg and I hate to waste a half full bottle of the 40mg . ## This can safely be done with any medication that isn't time released, as long as there aren't specific instructions on the label that tell you not to do so. Prescribing a new dosage is just a definite way to make sure the person is getting the correct dose, because when you cut a pill in half, there can be some irregularities, but they are usually miniscule. You may want to try cutting one or two and see how it works. Some pills tend to very crumbly, so cutting results in their falling apart and can make it harder to get the cor...

Is it ok to break 80 mg tablets in half to acheive 40mg dose? ## Of course it is! You would be far better and cheaper if you were to buy a good generic atorvastatin though, as Lipitor is exceedingly overpriced. 80mg is a HUGE dosage of atorvastatin, and is equivalent in potency to almost 160mg Simvastatin, which many consider the superior statin. Have you recently suffered a stroke or myocardial infarction? ## It is okay to do so, as long as the medication is not time released, and your doctor approves. My cardiologist often prescribes some of my medications in a higher dosage, so I can cut them in half, since it is often cheaper that way. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Atorvastatin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle aches. Are you on any othe...

My sister is taking Nitroglycerin 2.5MG Caps. Simvastatin Tab 40 MG and Isinopril Tab 5MG. Can she drink the teas mention below, without any contraindications with these medications? Slippery Elm, Howthorn Berries, and Phenugreek Tea. ## Has she tried asking her doctor, or pharmacist? Unfortunately, this information may be hard to find, because herbal substances aren't usually checked for interactions, as is done with actual prescription medications.
