Pradaxa mostly used as a substitute for warfarin (Coumadin ) for atrial fibrillation but there are also response of tamoxifen side effects such as unusual bleeding, short breath etc. There are also some response of having dehydrated, dryness of mouth/eyes. The positive side is that It does not require regular blood tests and it actually works better in few cases. Pradaxa might be a good substitute of warfarin but need more attention in long term use and in some specific cases.

My mum has been on Pradaxa since they first came out a few years now.Her weight has increased dramatically around the abdomen it does not look like normal fat?? Her arms and legs are now the same, she is a vegan and does not eat a lot.Breathlessness is an issue which then causes her problems when walking.Any ideas ## Hi- I hope you have taken some steps to consider the alternatives, it sounds like she is encountering some adverse reactions but under the current FDA processes governing the release of new medicine, it will be impossible to determine if the reactions are related to the drug unless she gets off it for the 3-5 days it takes to clear out of her system. Having witnessed the process with an “insiders” view, I’ll share my concerns about how these well-marketed ...

My husband was on Pradaxa for approximately 3 months. He started waking up every morning with blood on his tongue. He went to the ENT who scoped his throat & that was not the problem. He went to the dentist & that was not his problem. While off the Pradaxa for his procedure, the bleeding stopped. He has now gone back to Cumadin and their is no longer any blood in the mornings. ## Based on the research I gathered about Pradaxa, it seems as though your husband was experiencing a severe allergic reaction/side effect to the drug. If you take a look at the paragraph below, there are a lot of "excessive bleeding/blood" related side effects: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongu...

I was on warfarin following a cerebellar infarct and i really struggled with trying to keep my diet consistent to maintain my INR level and the side effects of warfarin got so bad I was going to stop taking it! My consultant said the risk of another strok e was too high as I have AF and he prescribed Pradaxa. Within three weeks I felt so much better. I have been taking pradaxa for over a year now and no side effects at all. Some of the side effects from warfarin took a while to clear but they have now all gone. No alopecia, the pains in my toes, which were stopping me from walking too far, have completely gone, no nausea and no more feeling like death warmed up! I know the risks associated with pradaxa but to be honest I am happy to take them as I now have a good quality of life. If I h...

My 80 yr. old mother had a DVT and was put on Pradaxa 4 mo. ago. Her new Dr. states she's not very familiar with the drug but will "taper" her off it by going down to one pill a day over 3 days. I'm wondering if tapering is necessary or should she just completely stop? Thank you for any answers. ## Why does she wanted her to stop taking it? After having a DVT, it is very important to take steps to prevent a recurrence, and something that helps prevent clotting, such as Pradaxa is usually one of those steps. It may cause side effects, such as nausea, headache, dizziness, stomach irritation, and increased risk of bleeding. Is there a plan to replace it with something else?

If you or a loved one has ever taken the drug Pradaxa, please pay close attention to what I have to say because this may be the most important message you ever read. Recently the blood-thinning drug PRADAXA has been linked to life threatening and sometimes fatal internal bleeding and heart attacks. A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has found that Pradaxa was “significantly associated with a higher risk†of heart attacks and acute coronary syndrome compared to similar blood thinning drugs. Over 500 cases of hemorrhaging have been reported to the FDA in the first quarter of 2011 alone. Since this drug was prescribed primarily to the elderly, the number of deaths and serious side effects are much more common among those 65 years or old...

I have been on for Pradaxa for just under a month. I had gained about 12 pounds from not being able to walk due to new A Fib. Now with Pradaxa, i'm able to walk a mile plus per day. I have been walking again for over 2 weeks. I have lost the 12 pounds and a couple of more. Instead of a loss of appetite, I have a curbing of my appetite, I am approaching my 20 year old weight. ## That is awesome, many report the opposite when taking this class of medications, so the FDA lists the common side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, weight gain, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising. (NDC 0597-0149 for more details.) Has anyone else experienced weight loss while taking this medication? ## Still at the same weight loss/12 pounds I take the med with 8 ounces of ...

My husband took his Saturday and Sunday evening meds during dinner; pradaxa, metopropal tartrate, and flomax. Is this a huge problem? I'm more worried about the pradaxa. I looked up the metopropal tartrate but could not find pradaxa. ## Hi Patti, According to the University of Maryland Medical Center's drug interaction tool, there is a quote "medium interaction potential" between Flomax and Metoprolol. Their warning denotes the following concerns: *Treatment with both drugs may result in low blood pressure (too low I'm assuming) *Using both together may result in an increased risk of certain side effects *Call your doctor if you feel lightheaded, or have fainting spells They also go on to state that your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of ...

I have been on pradaxa for about 5 months now and have noticed a thinning of my hair in the front. I am 69 and maybe it is just getting older. I have had no side effects at this time. I also take pacerone and my afib is under control. I did notice that my diabeties meds seem to be working better now as I have had to cut way down on my insulin after starting these meds. ## Hello, Diane! How are you? Actually, it's usually the Pacerone that causes the Alopecia and it is reversible, if the medication is discontinued or replaced with another option. Is there anything else I can help with? ## What else is available?

Since I started with this drug, over a year ago, I have had diarrhea. Now I am having stomach pains. A stool sample showed hidden blood. I am being prepared for a colonoscopy. I feel this med is the culprit, even though cardio says he doesn't think so. I am going to ask for a different med. See if I can get this under control. ## Hello, Barb! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. According to the side effects listed by the FDA, Pradaxa has been known to cause blood in the stool of some people that take it, along with bleaching, indigestion, heart burn and burning throat. Thus, it very well could be due to this medication, it's actually listed as being a fairly common side effect. Is there anything else I can help with? ## THANKS FOR THE REPLY. I HA...

Pradaxa at first seems like a good substitute for warfarin ( coumadin ). It does not require regular blood tests and it actually works better. But there's a HUGE problem in the event you develop a bleeding problem whether it be medical such as a stomach ulcer or traumatic such as a traumatic brain injury. In either case it is important that your system be returned to normal clotting function as soon as possible. If you are taking coumadin this is virtually no problem. They merely need to infuse you with an effective antidote, PCC, which will rapidly return your clotting function back to normal. If you are taking Pradaxa, this can be a very big problem BECAUSE THERE IS NO ANTIDOTE FOR PRADAXA that an ER doctor can give you which will reverse the effects of Pradaxa. None. The only thi...

Now that I am taking pradaxa, I can no longer take arthrotec for arthritis. Is there any other arthritis medication I can take? ## Hello, Denis! How are you? You should be able to take medications that don't cause blood thinning, which the Diclofenac in the Arthrotec does. (Diclofenac NDC code for more information 0054-4223.) The FDA lists the typical side effects of Pradaxa as possibly including nausea, headache, increased risk of bleeding, and easy bruising. (Pradaxa 0597-0149). What other medications have you tried? ## I have taken no other medication for arthritis except hydrocodone, 1 a day. This does not do much except for a short time and does contain acetaminophen which can cause liver problems. Since the arthritis is long term (30+ yrs so far, I am 62) I am looking for opti...

I was on Warfarin for 8 months then all of a sudden I was getting wild readings when my INR was checked. Had to go on heparin bridge shots which I had a really bad reaction to. My Dr. then put me on Pradaxa and I felt so much better, but after about 3 months I started losing gobs of hair. I am freaking out. Also have bouts of diarrhea. I am to be treated for pulmonary blood clots. Anyone else have these issues? When I stop the Pradaxa, will my hair grow back? This is causing me great stress. ## Hello, Patricia! How are you? I'm very sorry about the issues you're experiencing. It isn't something that the FDA lists among its typical side effects, but many people have experienced it among real world use reports. In most cases, drug induced alopecia reverses, once someone stops ...

I hate that crap. I lost my hair and when I asked the nurse about it, she looked it up and yes that is a side effect. That is the worst thing I have ever had done to me. It should be taken off the market. You can hardly eat a meal without the lawyers on TV telling you to contact them if you have a problem with Pradaxa. ## Hello, Peg! How are you? I'm very sorry about what happened. However, all medications carry the risk of causing side effects, it's just what happens when you add a chemical to the body to try to correct a problem. Some are more hazardous and risky than others and there's no way to know ahead of time, if any given person will or will not experience them. The legal complaints involve bleeding issues, which carry the risk of being fatal. Hair loss is unfortuna...

I forgot to take my 8 am dosage of pradaxa and cardizen pills and took them at 5 pm. when I remembered, should I skip the 8 pm dosage and continue on schedue in morning? I missed my morning meds and took them late this afternoon . pradaza and cardizen. I am due a night dose at 8 so do I just skip night dose and start regular rigimen in the morning? ## Hello, Jackie! How are you? Unless your doctor instructs otherwise, the FDA directs that you take the missed dose of a medication as soon as you remember, unless it's close to the time for the next dose, then you should skip it and just return to your regular dosing schedule. The typical side effects of these medications are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. Is there...

I understand that there are many side effects of Eliquis. My 41 year old husband has been on Pradaxa in the past and had severe side effects. The dr. has pleaded with him to stick to this one for at least three months, as it is very difficult to get his INR right with Coumadin. What can we do to get some relief from the joint pain? My heart is breaking he is in so much pain. (We're trying heating pad and staying off his feet--right now pain is in his ankles, earlier in the week, it was his knees). ## Hello, Denise! How is your husband doing? That has been a very common complaint from people taking Eliquis and is a known side effect of it, as listed by the FDA. He may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache and easy bruising. Typical side effects tend to taper off, after about 4 ...

been thinking of taking pradaxa for stroke prevention...the say it can reduce the stroke problem by 35%...and advice ## Has your doctor advised you to take it? Like any medication, there are risks associated with its use, so it should only be used if the possible benefits to you outweigh the risks. It contains the active ingredient Dabigatran, which is an anticoagulant, so that's how it can help prevent a stroke. However, the side effects can include: nausea, dizziness, easier bruising and increase risk of bleeding. You can learn more about it here:

Folks who have problems are quick to get on a site like this one. I would like to hear from some folks who have not had any problems and are satisfied with the medicine. The only folks who get on sites like this are those who have a complaint. Isn't their anyone out there who had a terrible free or close to trouble free experience? ## Eliquis now in second month no issues. 8/17/17 I've been taking 25mg of Atenolol 3xday for Afib, I have it often, have a pacemaker and on pradaxa (blood thinner). Apparently Atenolol is back-ordered all over the country. My cardiologist prescribed Metoprolol, only 25mg 1xday. I'm switching tomorrow and I'm concerned with enough dosage from Metoprolol. I have googled, can't locate equivalent dosage, can you help? ## It is generally better to follow your doctor's instructions as to what dosage you should take. Since these are in the same medication class, the doses are also sometimes the same. The FDA warns that the side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Have you started taking it, yet? If so, how are you doing?

Been on Pradaxa fro three months, experiencing severe itching all over. If I stop taking Pradaxa how long will it take for itching to stop? ## Hello, Alexandra! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Many medications in this class can cause itching, due to the effect they have on your circulation and, if you switch medications, it may take a few weeks for the side effects to go away. But please do not stop taking it, without consulting your doctor. Other side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache and easy bruising. Is there anything else I can help with?
