My medication has been changed from Zimvastatin to Atorvastatin since which time I have experienced severe pain in joints throughout my body and especially in the joints in my spine. Actully last year my total cholestrol was 8.5 then I started ad my dictor prescribed to take for 1 year or more. I am on 80 mg of Atorvastatin. Can I safely start cutting my doses to 40 for a week or two, then half the 40 for a week or two, then half the 20, then get off without the extreme side effects? ## Hi Terry, Generally, it's best to discuss tapering protocols with your prescribing doctor in order to mitigate possible risk factors (e.g. rebound effects or withdrawal symptoms). I am using atolip80 for 3months now due to high cholesterollevel of 12.8. Now my neck is swollen and my tongue. Little feve and chest pain. Can the atolip be the problem. l started taking atorvastatincalcium ( 10mg) almost 2 months ago when my doctor discovered that l have a plaque in my neck muscle and l was told it will reduce or dissolve this pllaque but ever since l started talking it ,l have experience alot of issues like my leg muscles just cotracting with me doing anything and this night the muscle in my forehead won't stop contracting and tbis gives me a sort of worry. ## Those can be typical side effects of this medication, additionally, some modern research has shown that taking them to lower cholesterol is not necessary, though as with most other findings, more studies need to be done. The Statin drug class all carry the risks of the same side effects and the only thing you can really do is try them and see how they affect you.
