I was recently prescribed 25mg 1x daily to aid in weight loss. After 4 weeks of taking the medication with no side effects, this past weekend I noticed blurriness in the eyes and trails when I turned my head from left to right. I've also been having a tough time just focusing on objects. I've now been off of the medication for 4 days.Since then I've been to my eye doctor, had a full dilation, exam, etc. My eyes, optic nerves, etc. are all 100% healthy. Has anyone else suffered this particular side effect? If so, how long does it take for normal vision to return? ## Yes, this medication has been known to cause various ocular side effects, including blurred vision, visual disturbance, and reduce acuity, according to NIH reports. How are you doing, now? Has there been any chang...

I was on topiramate for the last 2 1/2 years for migraines. I am a therapist and was getting pretty fed up with the cognitive side effects, as well as hope to try and have a baby in the next year so I stopped taking it. Cognitive side effects went away immediately for me, however I have gained 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks. I read about this and was worried, but given the fact that I never really lost much weight on the drug, I didn't think it would effect me in that way. Just be warned, you may love the weight loss now, but it comes back on when you stop it even if you are eating right and exercising! ## Although weight loss is listed as a general side effect of Topiramate, for some reason I get the sense that this medication plays with your hormones as well; which would explain why t...

I've been prescribed the generic version of Topamax... The mfg. is zydus, but I'm afraid to take them after reading a lot of bad reviews... Has anyone been successful with this pill and mfg.? ## While there can be differences from one generic to another, it can vary from person to person, so the only way to find out how it works for you is by actually trying it. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and weight changes. Have you tried taking it, yet? Are you on any other medications?

I haven't been taking topiramate for very long and finally decided to read the side effects today. It says it causes problems with cognition and can cause drowsiness, but I feel a ton more alert and clear headed than I have in a while. I have suffered from depression for years, and even the usual daily blues have gone away. I find my self having more energy and needing less sleep. The only thing I have noticed so far that goes along with side effects that others experience is that soda tastes HORRIBLE. Are the things I'm experiencing temporary and has anyone else had these side effects? (Prescribed for migraines, at 25 mg, stepping up to 50 at the end of the week, then 100 by the end of the next week) ## Not everyone experiences all of the side effects of any given medication. T...

Has anyone had any benefits from using Topamax for Trigeminal Neuralgia? Are there any serious side effects? ## Topamax contains the active ingredient Topiramate. Like any medication, there are those that have had good results from it and those that do not and have to try something else. Nothing works for everyone, the only way to see if it will help you is to try it. Common side effects can include: nausea, drowsiness, anorexia and memory problems. I was recently prescribed Topiramate 25mg tablet to aid in post-concussion. After taking 1 pill last night, I am experiencing sharp chest pains, feeling like a bad case of heartburn. Is this a common reaction? I hesitate to take another pill again as I don't feel this is tolerable. ## Hi Teddy, Based on my research, chest pain and heartburn are both listed as side effects of Topiramate. Of the two side effects, chest pain is actually regarded as something serious that should be reported to your doctor immediately. Referenced from: nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a697012.html#side-effects In my opinion, it probably wouldn't be wise to take any more than you have to until you're able to get ahold of your doctor. Hopefully he or she can then suggest a safer alternative in...

Sir, My son is 9 years old now. He got sudden epileptic attack when he was 4 years old. Nothing has been diagnosed in 5 MRIs and doctors say there is no structural diffect and having functional problem in EEG. He last all the activities slowly, including vision and hearing. He was in infusion of Midazolam 10ml/hr for 20 day to control seizures. Was in hospital for 105 days. He was an many anti-convulsions like Topiramate, Gaurdinal, piracetem and more. We found no much different in the condition and in consultation with Doctor slowly tappered the most of medications that had no much impact. I recently had to change pain drs b/c mine closed his practice. I have been fighting w/my WC company to detox from the pain meds I take for the last 5 years b/c I'm having a lot of detrimental secondary side effects. The new doc's PA is having me come off of the Topiramate (1200 mg daily) to 400mg daily in one month. This seems a little crazy fast to me. When I requested to go slower, she accused me of being argumentative =/ Has anyone else had this kind of experience? I also am on Methadone 40 mg, down from 60 & Fentanyl patch, 50 mpg, down from 100. Any feedback would be welcome! ## Hello, Syd! How are you doing? There is a risk of seizures, if you cut down on the Topiramate too fast, so you are right to want to be cautious. Have you tried speaking to the doctor, rather th...

I started topiramate (topamax) 6 weeks ago for migraines and went from 25 to 50mg after 2 weeks because I was doing fine on it but the last 4 weeks I’ve stayed at 50mg because I was feeling tired/foggy, but now suddenly over the last 9 days I’ve had cold-like symptoms, sore breasts, twitchy upper left back, awful backache (U/A checked out as clear), tummy ache/pains, pain under my ribs and nausea...I am feeling very anxious about it all. I went back to the gp today who suggested I come off of it and let everything settle down and then try again later if I want to (I don’t!). Is this normal? Anyone else get these side effects after a few weeks on the tablets? Thank you. ## Yes, those can be side effects, according to NIH reports, you may also experience headache, dry mo...

Hello, I've been taking Topiramate/Topamax for about 14 years. When is 'too long' as far as stopping the medication? I feel as though I have so much of the drug in my body already that it may need a break. ## Hello, Vicki! How are you? That's not actually how it works, your body doesn't keep storing more and more of the medication, that's why you have to take regular doses. Our bodies process stuff out, after a certain period of time. As to how long is too long, that is entirely up to your and your doctor. Only the two of you can decide how long you should continue taking it. Have you discussed your concerns with them? The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, clumsiness, drowsiness, red eyes and memory problems. ## T...

I have observed several side effects while taking Topiramate as prescribed by my doctor. I know I need to be careful when consuming alcohol and taking this medication. With that being said, I am an adult and fully aware of my actions, and although I am not increasing my consumption, but furthermore more mindful and drinking what I would consider less. I am noticing nights where I am forgetting a lot the next day or black outs... has anyone else had this occur as well while taking this mediation? I am only on 50mg. ## There are warnings stating that you should not mix alcohol with Topirimate, due to the side effects that it may cause, which could include psychological issues, severe dizziness, drowsiness, and memory issues.
