This is due to the fact that the containers they use expose it to the elements that contribute to degradation. If it is in a bottle as dispensed by your pharmacy, then the expiration date is one year from when it was filled for you, because that bottle can leave it exposed to the elements that cause degradation, so it begins to lose efficacy after that year. If it is in the original factory sealed container, then they are usually good for 4 to 5 years, until the seal is broken. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
