Modafinil, sold under the brand name Provigil among others, is a medication to treat sleepiness due to narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and obstructive sleep apnea.[3][7] While it has seen off-label use as a purported cognitive enhancer to improve wakefulness in animal and human studies, the research on its effectiveness for this use is not conclusive.[8][9][10][11] Modafinil is taken by mout...

Hi. I have narcolepsy, chronic pain, and several disabilities from a severe accident a few years ago. I've taken Adderall (30 MG 2x day) for the past 3 years. Prior to that I took 200 MG of Provigil daily, but it's cost was over $800/month, and neither insurance nor medicare would cover it. My former sleep specialist switched me to Adderall with good results. I had to change doctors last December, and the new Dr. at the University of Iowa took me off all of my meds pending new sleep studies (I've had 3 in the past 5 years), pain clinic (also had that 3X in 5 years), seeing a neurologist, etc. We're talking 3 months for these tests and I'm currently sleeping 18 hours a day, and I'm in so much pain from lack of my other meds that I wouldn't care to be on my fee...

drug to help fatigue ## I have Lupus and rhuematoid arthritis and suffer from chronic fatigue and pain. I am going to my pain management doctor tomorrow morning and I want to see if he will perscribe me something for fatigue, what do you recommend? I take Adderall but that's for my ADHD and I have been on it for 30 year's and it does nothing for fatigue. Should I ask for generic provigil? And can he perscribe this medicine? Thank you so much. ## Hello, Sarah! How are you? It isn't likely that your doctor will prescribe both, most likely it will be one or the other, the Adderall, or Provigil, since they are both in the same medication class. The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, weight ...

Looking for the cost of this drug and is covered under your drug card plan. ## My insurance is ignoring my doctors prescribing pro vigil then modafinil (generic) for 1 in am and 1 at afternoon if needed! I had 2 refills for 2 months, and only refilled for 30 pills, instead of 60 as prescribed! I asked pharmacy how much the 30 pills they denied me would cost if I would pay since I had a month before I had an appointment with my psychiatrist. I was told it would be $875.00 for those would cost me out of pocket! I was shocked, because these helped me for the last 2 years! I am 80 yrs. old! My thinking is so much sharper with pill, and other antidepressants always made me sleep especially during the day! I would appreciate an answer or response! Thank you for your help! ## Kimberly, I am so...

what is the difference between the 2 medicines besides the doaseage and the Nuvigil is cheaper ## Provigil contains the active ingredient Modafanil and Nuvigil contains the active ingredient Armodafanil. They are in the same drug class and treat the same things. The only difference is the needed dosage of each and the fact that sometimes one medication works better than another for different people. For instance, I have a severe problem using Metoprolol to treat my high blood pressure, I get a ton of bad side effects from it, however, I have no problems at all using Carvedilol, even though they are in the same medication class and do the same thing. It's just how it works. Which one has your doctor recommended?

Having a hard time getting my insurance company to pay for my Provigil; United Healthcare, Medco. They say I can pay for it but that is full price ast several hundred dollars per month. Any suggestions? I had not success with Nuvigil. ## Hi David, Insurance companies can sure be a pain! Have you considered looking for various prescription coupons for this drug? It may be worth while to give it a try in the meantime. One webpage I came across has a coupon that you can print out and give to your pharmacy for a generous discount on any prescription that is over $4.00. There seems to be a number of sites that offer these types of coupons and many users on the forums here have declared their valid legitimacy. Here is one which this site offers: RX Discount Card Please post back if it does or...

I'm on medicare, and my last prescription of Provigil cost $816 for a 30 day supply. I am a recovering liver transplant patient and had suffered from daytime sleepiness from Obstructive sleep apnea and Primary Biliary Cirrhosis. Provigil is prescribed specifically FOR these conditions, but I encounter resistance each time I request a refill. Without this medication, I am literally unable to arise in the morning and participate in a normal day, such as operating a vehicle. In prescribing the medication, my sleep medicine doctor states specifically what conditions I have that require its use. I am currently seeking organizations to which I can apply for help with the cost, and have had no success. The only site I've found for assistance is restricted to patients with no insurance....

I have a lot of Provigil left from 9 years ago... It was prescribed for the fatigue & sleepiness of fibromyalgia. Is it likely to be still effective after 9 yrs? Is it too old to take? ## You can learn a lot of medication expiration dates on this FDA page. Generally, medications start to lose efficacy once expired, due to exposure to the substances that cause degradation, such as heat, light, and moisture. Thus, after 9 years, they are most likely no longer effective and it would be best to dispose of them properly. Is there anything else I can help with?

Has anyone had any side effects by taking provigil that are disturbing and do you have to take daily or can you take it occassionally as needed. ## Please take this as directed by your doctor. If you do not take it regularly, then you will experience side effects whenever you take it, because your body will not adjust to the drug. Some of the most common side effects include: nausea, headache, nervousness and insomnia. ## I only tried Provigil once (a full vial) due to the cost at the time. I had really bad headaches in the beginning. As the other responder suggested, they got better as my body adjusted. I didn't stay on it after I finished that bottle (again, due to cost and better alternatives for my condition).

I'm wondering if anyone else out there took this drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding and what their experience was. I know anecdotal evidence is not scientific proof of anything, but studying pregnant women is not ethical. I noticed they just started a provigil pregnancy registry to track women who choose to stay on it while pregnant but I'm guessing it will be some time until we hear any results from that. I chose to stay on it during my pregnancy because I had to work and drive safely. I lowered my dose to the lowest amount I can function on. My son was born completely healthy, very social, happy, no health issues. However, in order to breastfeed, I was switched to ritalin since there is more information available about it and breastfeeding. I hate it... it barely works (I ...

I have noticed that taking 100mg of Provigil raises my blood pressure. Anyone else have these same issues? Will it go away over time? ## That is normal, when you take a stimulant, such as this. The FDA does lists it as a common side effect and no, it most likely won't go away, it may actually worsen with time, which is why these medications are not usually prescribed for people with existing high blood pressure. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, insomnia, and anorexia. How high has your blood pressure been? You might need to switch to a different medication.

Is this used for treating a cough from leukemia? ## You can see the page on Provigil for more information about this medicine... ## I personally tried this drug and I feel no doping effect after taking it. On the contrary, I felt energized and more focused. This is in contradiction with the World Anti-Doping Agency which prohibits the use of Modafinil. Actually, FDA approved the use and intake of Modafinil as a drug that enhances wakefulness, mental energy and focus. ## I have recently been given a generic brand of provigil that is football shaped and has 200 MG on one side and APO on the other. The label has APTX2 as the manufacturer. I have been taking modafinil for quite a few years for chronic fatigue and hyposomnia. This brand is not even close to being worth taking. I'm curiou...
