Is there a non-script replacement for Prednisone. This may sound really dumb, but we have a dog with big time allergies and the only thing that will help him is Prednisone. Problem is that the Vet wants to run $200 - $300 worth of blood test every month before they will renew the script. Needless to say, we really can't afford this. The dog is 14 years old and nothing else helps with the allergies. ## Prednisone is a corticosteroid and as such is available by prescription only, as are all the alternatives.

86 year old woman been prescribed 8 x 5mg tablets a day for a week can they be evened out over the day or do they have to be taken in one go ## Hi, Lyn! If her doctor didn't specify otherwise, she should be able to split them up throughout the day. Many times people are just told to take them all at once to make sure they don't forget to take the next dose later. It's been proven through medication compliance testing that people will usually remember to take one dose, but subsequent ones are typically forgotten. It may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings and fluid retention. Learn more Prednisone details here. Is there anything else I can help with?

pills expired in 2008- are they still good to treat poison oak in August 2011 ## Certain drugs are actually okay to take after expiration, whereas others such as antibiotics can become toxic. My personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 3-4 years old. I would also check with your doctor or pharmacy to make sure that you're using the most effective treatment option for poison oak. It may still be effective, but not nearly as potent. It's also impossible to give a direct answer to this question, since each medication can effect people differently. We all know that it's better to avoid the expired drugs and stay on the safe side, but unfortunately, the only way to find out is to actually try it. I wouldn't suggest taking that r...

I have a twelve year old son with cystic fibrosis recently prescribed Prednisone 20mg. The prescription is to take 2 tablets twice a day. Does this mean take 2 tablets in the morning and two in the evening? ## You should check with his doctor or pharmacist to be certain, but going by the usual pharmaceutical directions, yes, it that normally means you should give him 2 tablets at each dosing. Otherwise, it should say take one tablet, twice daily, or something similar. Prednisone is a steroid class medication, so it may cause side effects, such as: nausea, dizziness, weight gain and fluid retention. A 90 year old woman was diagnosed with penumonia about 4 weeks ago which required hospitalization. She was placed on an antibiotics was not getting any better. Was rushed by ambulance to the hospital for choking and was placed on prednisone of 50 mg/day for a week with a plan to have the prednisone decreased by 10mg/day every week there after, until weaned. She starts today with 20 mg(s)/day for the next week, but has not regained any of her energy. I am praying for a miracle that she will regain her strength, but it does not look very promising. Was the initial dose of 50mg/day too much for her system. Her pneumonia appears to have cleared up, but she is so short winded, fatigued, always wants to sleep and has lost interest in her usual activities. Prior to the pneumonia, was washing p...

i have prednisone 5052 watons they are ten years old are the pills still good? will they still work? ## No, they have likely lost most of their effectiveness by now and you should just dispose of them. Even when pills are left in the factory sealed container, the longest shelf life is usually only 3 years. Once they are opened and dispensed in a pharmacy bottle that exposes them to the elements that cause degradation, the expiration shortens to just one year. Learn more Prednisone details here. I'm a 74 yr old male and have gained 20lbs on prednisone for PMR and my face and stomach are bloated. Dr started me on 25mg, then after 6 wks and blood wk, reduced me down to 12 1/2 mg and then symptoms returned. I went to 12mg and now 10mg. and I'm ok so far. What is the outlook for people like me on prednisone with poly myalgia rheumatica? ## Hello, Rip! How are you? The side effects you've described are common with long-term use of steroids and won't likely go away, as long as you are taking it. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea, dizziness, fluid retention, acne, nervousness and insomnia. Unfortunately, there aren't many other treatment options for this condition and the Prednisone is usually taken for a year or more. Have you had any im...

I have to start this in the morning, is this a lot at once I have to do this 2x a day for a bad cough. ( I have had it for 3 weeks) Also should I take a lower mg closer to time to get off it or what. I'm scarf to take this I took it before and it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest and had night sweats. Any one take this much a day? ## Hi Angie, I don't know if your cough is related to Asthma in any way, but for someone who is 12 years old and up, the dose for asthma is 40 mg orally every 12 hours. That being said, I don't think it is unsafe to be taking this much, however if it has made you feel ill in the past you may want to find an alternative. Have been taking Prednisone 20mg pills split into 4 pieces for a bronchial infection. The pills are expired from 2010. I'm taking the taper off 6 to 1 portions per day. It doesn't seem to be taking effect, although it has worked in the past. Could it have lost it's effectiveness? ## As far as expired meds go, according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. Source: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml It's possible that it may still be effective, but my personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 3 years old. When was the last time you tried taking it? ##...

I know that everybody has different reactions to drugs, but I have to ask if what my daughter is going through is similar to anyone else's experience. My daughter is 4 years old and has been diagnosed with minimal change nephrotic syndrome. She is currently halfway through a 12 week cycle of prednisone. Of course her face is swollen. We expected that. Her appetite has increased. We expected that. The thing that is concerning to me is that she has seemed kind of down and "mopey" for the past couple of days. She made the comment that she is having trouble putting her shoes on because her belly gets in the way. Could it be that her weight gain is causing her to be depressed? Does a 4 year old even think like that? This medicine seems to have changed her a lot, and I cannot wait...

Im an 18 year old Male, supposed to be a fun time being 18 and all….but boy has prednisolone stuffed up my last year or so. Maybe i just react worse to this drug than some people, but the way its hit me has to be lived to be believed. The irritable uncomfortable feeling (even when your trying to relax on the couch), the anger and mood swings that are constant, the weight gain and wanting to eat all the time, the insomnia which makes you feel even worse for lack of sleep, the gigantic swelling in the face to make a once normal face a horror show, the fever which is so often there, the acne all over my body, the lack of confidence I now have, the depressing way you now interact with the ones you love, and one of the worst things to go through, the looking back and remembering how go...

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, acne and nervousness. Is there anything else I can help with? ## just an FYI, prednisone can also be used for certain types of anemia. when i was 2 years old, i was hospitalized with coombs positive hemolytic anemia. i was literally bleeding to death. the thing that saved my life was prednisone. this would have been around 1971, and steroids werent really being used for anemia yet. my pediatrician and a specialist ...

Greetings. I am a 67 year old woman destroyed by auto immune disorders that required prednisone that destroyed me further. I had 8 surgeries in 1.5 years which left me very handicapped and I have RA and osteoporosis. Constant pain and limited abilities. Worst of all is pain in my hands, limiting the crafts that would keep me happy. Constant intense pain which I have been on Tramadol for. Now a pain management center has started me on Butrans 5. And I am afraid. Because of my auto immune conditions there’s not a side effect my body doesn’t love to grasp. I never read the inserts that come with a med, because I don’t want to know. Talk me up or down please. I need to live free of this pain. I can’t bear it another day. I had my hips, knees and one shoulder replaced...

Ok so I pulled a shoulder muscle that gives me muscle spasms stiffing my neck and shoulders. My doctor prescribed me prednisone 20mg for 7 days and Voltaren gel. The prednisone 20mg bottle says "take one tablet by mouth twice a day" , so how do I take it like how many hours apart , will I get side effects and withdrawal when I'm done , also can I take it with ibeprofin or cyclobenzaprine music relaxers. I am 29 year old male 5'6 weight 170 if that helps thank you ## Hello, Alan! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain. I have copd and take maintenance dose of ten. When I get serious attack I take s tapered dose of 20mg. I live on a boat in guatemala during the winter months. Its both hot and humid. They are a year old and don't seem to be working. I'm half way through this batch. I.have a new batch now. Should I start the new batch now? Thanks ## Yes, they can lose efficacy if exposed to such conditions, so it would likely be best to take the new supply. The typical side effects of Prednisone may include nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness, anxiety, acne, and insomnia. My mother-in-law has to take it, once in awhile, for her severe asthma, and I always told her not to even keep it in our bathroom, so she now keeps all her medications in a cabinet in her bedroom. I am a 30 year old female and in the beginning of March 2013 I got terribly sick with some sort of cold paired with a severe sinus infection. I was prescribed Methylprednisolone 4mg dose pack. I completed that with only minor side effects however it didn't really work and I was back at the doctor a mere week later feeling just as bad. I was then prescribed Prednisone 20mg tablets, taking 3 daily for 5 days. It helped my symptoms and I felt better. However, my last dose was Sunday 3/17/2013 and today is Wednesday 3/20/2013 and I am feeling incredibly strange. I feel weak, tired, irritable, depressed, dizzy and light-headed at times, off balance and I am getting mild headaches. I'm also moody and have a short temper. From looking online it looks like these are some of the devastat...
