My doctor prescribed these pills for me for 10 days twice a day but didn't explain if I had to avoid certain foods and I am also wondering why I have to take them for 10 days? ## No, there is no list of foods you should avoid, but you should make sure not to take it on an empty stomach, because the FDA warns that it is very harsh on the stomach. You should take it for the duration your doctor has directed, to bring your potassium levels back up to a safe zone. The reason is because potassium tends to be very harsh, it usually increases stomach acid production and, if you lay down within half an hour, you may experience reflux which could cause damage to your esophagus. What time of day is this med best ingested ## The dosing instructions for this medication do not list a specific time of day that one should take it, so I assume that you can use it at your own convenience. The adult dosing information for Potassium Chloride is posted below in regards to 'Prevention of Hypokalemia': "Oral: 10 to 20 mEq orally once a day given in equally divided doses using formulations which include normal-release tablets or capsules, extended-release tablets or capsules, dissolvable tablets, oral solution or powder for dissolution mixed with an appropriate volume of water or juice." I hope this helps! ## Can a SA form of potassium Cloride be dissolved and ingested mixed with pudding or applesause?

I was taking potassium cl er 20meq & im out of them so im trying to find something equivalent to that over the counter. How many 99 milligrams of potassium can I take to make one 20 meq dose? ## Juli's answer is correct: 20 mEq is approximately 1,485 mg. The conversion between mg and mEq is a bit tricky and requires some chemistry knowledge but I will note the calculations below. "A milligram, abbreviated mg, is a metric unit of mass or weight defined as one thousandth of a gram. A milliequivalent is a measure of the quantity of ions in an electrolyte fluid. One milliequivalent is one thousandth of one mole of charges and is represented by the symbol mEq. The ions of different elements vary in mass, so it is necessary to know the atomic or molecular weight of the ions and th...

Drug interaction Want to no if I can take these 4 potassium pills for 2 days with my other daily medications ## Hello, Mare! How are you? As long as your doctor has approved it, then yes, they can be taken together. The FDA classifies potassium as a supplement and it can cause stomach pain and nausea, so it should be taken with food. The more pressing question, I think, is if your potassium is low, why do they still have you on the Hydrochlorothiazide? It is a diuretic and well known to cause potassium loss. Stopping it and switching to a different one might easily solve the problem. You may want to ask your doctor about it. Typical side effects to it may also possibly include nausea, headache, dehydration and increased urination. ## in the morning I take Glimepiride 2 mg, Amlodipine-be...

Can the side effects include stiffness & cramps in both hands? ## Hello, Paul! How are you? That means that they contain 20 milliequivalents per tablet, that's the dosage and the ER denotes them as being time released. The main side effect of this supplement, as listed by the FDA, is stomach pain and nausea, so it's best to take it with food. As to the stiffness and cramping, that is most likely caused by your potassium being low, but you should have it checked out, just in case. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I am taking lots chloride 10meg er cap for potassium but I still get leg and arm cramps. So I stopped taking them for a week no cramps. So what gives.

How many milligrams is 20 meq? ## Hi Julee, According to nih.gov, 1500 mg is equivalent to 20 mEq (when referring to Potassium Chloride ER Tablets). I'm not sure which, if any, other medications are also measured in milliequivalents, so if you could please post back with a specific brand name or generic drug in mind, it may be easier to determine if the above information still applies to you or not. Is anyone else familiar with this type of measurement?

Can I use potassium gluconate instead of potassium chloride and if so how much to equal 20 meq ## Hi Donna, Can you get a little bit more specific on the abbreviation of Potassium "Chl". There are a few possibilities to choose from with that prefix, such as Chloride or Chlorate. To put it simply, Potassium "Chloride" as a supplement shouldn't be used when chloride-levels are normal, or when chloride should be avoided (ie: kidney diseases). Potassium gluconate is a type of potassium salt that people use as a supplement as well. It's more often used to treat hypokalemia, or low potassium. As far as comparing doses, I haven't found any specific details on this just yet. But in general, Potassium is very very easy to get in your diet, just by eating foods rich in...

What us the shelf life for potassium chloride 20 meq er? ## Hello, Beatrice! How are you? If it is in a pharmacy dispensed bottle, then it expires on year from the date it was dispensed. The reason for this is because that's when it becomes exposed to the elements that cause degradation. However, if it's in the original factor sealed container, most pills are good for about 4 years, until the seal is broken. The FDA warns that this medication can be very harsh on the stomach, so it should be taken with food.
