The reason for this is that when medications are available for generic production, there is no standardized shape, size, color or imprint. The US FDA only requires they have a unique imprint so the manufacturer, type of drug and dosage can be identified in case of emergency, but they are, quite literally, made by thousands of different companies, so there are thousands of pills on the market that contain narcotics and they all look different and have different markings.
