Empirin was a product of Burroughs Wellcome & Co. An effective over-the-counter pain reliever. It was a mixture (compound) of equal amounts of phenacetin and aspirin plus some caffeine. The inclusion of caffeine acts as an anti-depression agent. In the 1960s, this protected formula was sold to Bristol Meyers who marketed it (famously) as Excedrin. In 1983, the FDA banned phenacetin after studies revealed that was harmful to the kidneys and linked to cancer. Following the FDA's ruling, the 'Excedrin' formula was modified by replacing phenacetin with acetaminophen. In 2005, Bristol Meyers sold the formula and name to Novartis who continues to produce and market it as Excedrin. The same "Excedrin" formula is also available from equivalent labels - usually at lower c...

Is a pain pill ## Hi Alex, Based on my research, Nordinet Adulto contains the following active ingredients: Acetanilide 100 mg + Aspirin 400 mg + Caffeine 50 mg + Phenacetin 150 mg I haven't found much information on the drug as a whole, but I figured that looking into the indications of each active ingredient could help us better determine what it may be used for. Acetanilide - has analgesic as well as antipyretic properties (NOTE: this drug is considered to have a high toxicity) Aspirin - has analgesic, fever reducing, and anti-inflammatory properties Caffeine - we know what this does in general as far as stimulation goes, but studies show that it may also help alleviate acute headaches in the right amount. Phenacetin - this medication was formerly used as a pain killer, but was r...

Used to take for cramps. What was it? ## Is this still on the market? I used to take it for cramps ## Hello, Mel and Sandy! How are you both? Edrisal contained the active ingredient Phenacetin, however, it was banned by the FDA in 1983 due to the increased risk it caused of kidney failure and certain types of cancer. It is actually metabolized into Acetaminophen(Tylenol) so that is what it was replaced with in over the counter medications. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I wish they would research this some more and make any necessary changes. It really worked great for cramps. I don't know about you but it gave me a very euphoric feeling and feeling of well-being, but I never took more than absolutely needed. ## I took it also, back in the 60’s. It made me VERY ALE...

What are round white tablets imprinted P-D 679, labeled "APC"? Presume they're obsolete Parke-Davis something with aspirin or acetaminophen. ## I have tried several searches for this, but can't find any information on it, however, if it was an over the counter product, those imprints aren't required to be listed with the FDA and finding information on something that is no longer manufactured makes it even more difficult. Where they found in the U.S or elsewhere? That may help to narrow it down. ## Thank you. I've done multiple searches and also found nothing specific for that tablet. I've asked 2 pharmacists (both younger than 40) who couldn't figure it out. I started looking for aspirin combo drugs and found an obsolete aspirin-phenacetin-caffeine produc...
