What purpose does the potassium serve in this medicine ## Hello, Dennis! How are you? That's the chemical salt it is derived from, the actual chemical name for this medication is Phenoxymethylpenicillin. Though it isn't always listed in the name, or on the label by your pharmacy, all medications have an additional designation that shows the chemical salt they are derived from, such as hydrochloride. The FDA lists this as an antibiotic and the typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
