Penicillins (P, PCN or PEN) are a group of antibiotics originally obtained from Penicillium moulds, principally P. chrysogenum and P. rubens. Most penicillins in clinical use are chemically synthesised from naturally-produced penicillins. A number of natural penicillins have been discovered, but only two purified compounds are in clinical use: penicillin G (intramuscular or intravenous use) and penicillin V (given by mouth). Penicillins were among the first medications to be effective against...

I'm all out of Amoxicillin and have Pota-V-kin Penicillin V 800000U... Does this cure a UTI? Please help. ## Hi Juno, A study by the US National Institute of Health smugly describes Penicillin's efficacy against UTI's as being a rational choice. Source: NIH / PMC477226 However my research leads me to believe that Penicillin's efficacy may also be dependent upon the strain of bacteria that's causing the infection. Therefore it may be a good idea to have your doctor analyze the bacteria through whatever diagnostics are deemed appropriate, in order to ensure that taking Penicillin is indeed the best approach. If you're unable to get in to see a doctor, perhaps a local pharmacist could at least advise you on Penicillin's standard adult dosing protocols for a UTI....

Hello, I've been seeing boils/blister on and around my genitals, my scrotum and close to the rectum. I've done different laboratory tests including herpes to know what exactly is wrong but to no avail. This thing has been doing me for 5 years now, please i need help on what medicine in tablet or cream to use to permanently cure this disease because it's really frustrating. Thanks and i hope to hear from you soon. ## Hello, Barton! How are you? Sorry about the problem you're having. Have you seen a dermatologist? If it wasn't herpes, which is what would most commonly cause genital blisters, then the next thing I can think of would be that it could be an allergy of some sort. There are some types of hives that can do that. Have you tried changing your soap, laundry det...

I am taking penicillin for strep throat, but i find it very difficult to take one pill 4x a day considering all the time I must wait before and after I eat to take them (It just doesn't quite match up with my schedule and I do not want to mess it up). Can I take 2 pills 2x a day? ## Hello, Streppy! How are you? No, you need to take them as instructed by your doctor. The reason they are spaced out that way is to keep the medication in your body at a constant level to prevent the bacteria from being able to start to grow and proliferate, again. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Hello. I have a terrible cough, not dry but very painful when coughing and my throat is itchy. Can I use penicillin vk to treat this? ## This is an antibiotic and should only be taken to treat a medically confirmed infection, taking it when you do not have an infection could cause you to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria, as warned by NIH reports. It's typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. Has there been any change, or are you still experiencing these symptoms? Are you on any other medications? ## I have a severe case of cough/congestion and have been taking penicillin but it's not helping! What else can I take to take it away?

I was told by my son's Pediatirician that this was not penicillin (as he is allergic to PCN). Now after reading several discussions about this med, I'm worried. Please respond ASAP! Thank you, a concerned mother. ## If he is allergic to PCN he should not take this medication. It is a close cousin to the penicillin family and he will also be allergic to it. I am also allergic to amoxicillin (pcn sister) and I was given this medicine for a ear infection and started getting hives in my face n swelling eyelids and tingly mouth. I stopped the omnicef when symtoms developed. So pls dont give to your son.

Can i apply for RSS. I had this for months.penicillin cream.????? ## Hi jerry, What is it that you mean by applying for "RSS"? I'm sure you don't mean "Really Simple Syndication (RSS)" that websites use to feed headlines and news flashes, but I've never heard of the term/abbreviation being used in medical context... By the way, if your Penicillin cream really is "months old" and you're questioning whether it's still ok to take - an accurate answer would depend upon how it was stored, and whether it already expired. If that is the case and it is expired, then I think your best bet would probably be to get a new prescription, since older antibiotics (with less efficacy) may not fully eradicate a bacterial infection; potentially leading to antibi...

Is Amoxicilina 500mg the generic for Penicillin VK 500mg? ## To answer your question, no, Amoxicillin is not the generic for Penicillin VK. Both of these antibiotics are their own generic form, but the difference between the two is very subtle. Many references note however, that Amoxicillin is considered to be a slightly improved version of Penicillin for various reasons.
