Osteoporosis ("porous bones", from Greek: οστον/ostoun meaning "bone" and προς/poros meaning "pore") is a disease of bones that leads to an increased risk of fracture.[1] In osteoporosis, the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture deteriorates, and the amount and variety of proteins in bone are altered. Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a bone mineral density of 2.5 standard deviations or more ...

had a reclast injection12/8/09 I had shorten on breath after the body aches and slight fever is this normal? I have rapid heartbeat everytime I try to doing anything like running the sweeper, dusting & etc. ## Flu-like symptoms exist in about 15% of patients who have Reclast (meaning 85% don't experience it). Your doctor should have told you to take Tylenol the day of your infusion and for three days following the infusion. You should have also drank two glasses of water the morning of the infusion, and eat normally. The body aches have been seen in clinical trials, but this is the case for all drugs in the class (to include Fosamax, Boniva, and Actonel). FYI, when a patient takes Reclast, 61% of the solution binds straight to the bones where it's needed and the remaining 39...

gemcal ds is prescribed by my doctor for osteoporosis for lower back pain . is it worth taking . ## This is actually just a multivitamin supplement, the regular Gemcal contains Calcitrol, Calcium and Zinc, I would guess that the DS formulation also contains something else, but I can't find any specific information on it. It will not actually treat pain, but by supplementing these vital minerals, especially the calcium, it might help prevent worsening of the Osteoporosis. Are there any other questions? ## It looks like Gemcal DS is actually supposed to contain Calcium Carbonate 1250 mg + Calcitriol 0.25 mcg, typically prescribed for osteoporosis. So it sounds similar to the regular Gemcal, but does vary in its formulation. ## I used to take gemcal ds for 1month that tym it dint pain ...

I have read a lot of troubling facts SINCE I had thais shot, and don't know if I would takeit again in six months ! I sent my M.D. all the facts with the new black box label DRUGS NOT TO TAKE. It seems that people are having "stress" fractures from weakening of the bone tissue. Something about not re building bones but they are being torn down too fast, more than they are made. So consider this drug like all the other cancer drugs of the past for osteoporosis !! Reclast was a significant problem too ! You should feel nauseous for about one week, and you will feel like you have the flu also. Good Luck to all those who need this drug, I am in this category b/c I was on Bisphosphanates since I was 19, (now 66), had 4 doses of RECLAST, can't have that anymore either. Looks l...

I had a thyroidectomy in 1988 for a non-toxic goiter and began taking Synthroid and then levothyroxine. In 2018 I had another thyroidectomy because the thyroid gland grew back. I'm now taking 1.50 mcg of the medication. I recently checked the monograph and discovered that this medication can cause osteoporosis. I was diagnosed with this in May of 2018 during a bone scan preceding the thyroid surgery. Has anyone else had a diagnosis of osteoporosis while taking levothyroxine? I'm pretty surprised that I would have this ailment even though I'm 75. I've never been a thin woman which seems to be the person who most often gets osteoporosis. ## No, but I feel so weak my bones, so much pain namb . :( I feel levothyroxine it’s the trigger of all my symptoms. Diagnosed 5 mo...

I do suggest you drink alot of water. I traveled one hour and drank 64 ounces of water on the way, I did not want any kidney problems. I did not have any problems. I am 55 years old and have severe osteoporosis

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2018. My doctor recently presented me with information on medications for this condition and I find the possible side effects frightening. One is taken every six months, what if I have a bad reaction to that. It seems to be those meds or broken bones - I'm between the devil and the deep blue sea! Plus, I seem to be more sensitive to medications as I age. Can anyone discuss their experiences with osteoporosis medications? ## My mother-in-law, who is 73, tried one a few months ago, it made her miserable very quickly, and she stopped after 2 weekly doses. She has now refused to take anymore. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, headache, diarrhea, and joint/muscle aches. The one she tried was Alendronate. Many people ...

Does anyone have Celiac and takes Forteo? My doctor prescribed this medicine for my osteoporosis. I am extremely worried about taking this medicine and all the side affects with Forteo. I am 51, post menopause, and have a fractured leg. The bone is taking a lot of time to heal. One side effect I read from Forteo was more fractures. I am looking for any side affects from people with auto immune diseases, not doctors answers. Thank you. ## Hi Alice, I am set to begin my first dosing of Forteo this week and I am very nervous. I am 53 and was dx with Celiac in 2004. I also have multiple other autoimmune dx. One of my long term meds is oral prednisone. Also early menopause at 42 with no artificial medically suggested. I have osteoporosis and osteopenia measurements. Also on warfarin for auto...

Have any women used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a successful treatment for osteoporosis? ## I have a friend who is doing great on HRT. ## I have been happy with being on HRT. It seems as though it slows my bone loss. I recommend weight bearing exercises and HRT. ## It has successfully helped some women, since it can slow bone loss. You can read more on MedLine Plus about the treatment options. As was also mentioned, weight bearing exercises, if approved by your doctor, can also help. My mother-in-law recently saw a specialist who told her to eat yogurt on a daily basis, in addition to her regular dairy intake. What other treatment options have been offered to you?

I had a shot about 4-5 months ago(due for another one), doubt I'll put that into my system again ! I now am havin bi-lateral hip pain that awakes me every night, and when I walk, I'm stiff !!! Never had these things before, so it seems to me, that the longer it's in your body, the worse off you are ! JMHO. Sent a letter to MD that gace it to me w/black box warning and it said "druge not to take". I have not heard fromher on that note. She probably has nothing else to offer me. She stopped RECLAST after 4 doses,b/c she was getting lomg bone crumbling fractures in some of her patients. So we shall see what the next round of "poison" people will think of for us !!! Good Luck to you all ## Hello, Antonette! Sorry about the pain that you're experiencing. You a...

What are the advantages of Vebalone Injections? I am a 65 year old lady with severe Osteoporosis as per my BDM Report. I have severe pain in my right foot just above the ankle region and did not get hurt. There is no external/hidden injury. Pain is persisting. I am not able to take oral therapies. I am also having constant pain in my upper abdominal region and have a very poor appetite. My digestion is poor as a result. Am I a good candidate to take the Vebalone Injection therapy? Please advise. ## I have been prescribed the vebalone injection by my doc for osteoarthritis. I have heard that this has lots of side effects. Difficulty doing pilates, balancing my body, and have a fear of falling with vulnerable bones due to osteoporosis. ## Hello, Elizabeth! How are you? I understand your concern. My mother-in-law also has it and we always worry about her. However, in reality, activities such as Pilates, are good for you, since they do help keep your body stronger, more flexible and improve balance, which as detailed by the NIH, can help prevent future falls and bone breaks. Are you taking any medications to improve your bone density? Do you also make sure to take in enough calcium and vitamin D?

I need to know if it's true that it helps offset the loss of hair some people experience(1/3 of hair some need wigs) and what are the dosages 10,000 mcs or mls plus Vit B complex and what vitamins/mineral supple ments? ## Biotin may help, but the only way to find out is for you to try it. However, you should always check with your doctor to make sure that it's safe for you to do so. You shouldn't exceed the dosage suggested by your doctor or on the product packaging. There is no proven supplement protocol that I can give you, I'm sorry, I wish there were. Vitamin E is also said to help with the health of your hair, so that could be another to try, if your doctor says it is safe for you to take. Does anyone else have any suggestions to add? ## I believe that while you are...

IT SEEMS THAT AFTER READING ALL THE REMARKS ON HERE THAT NONE OF US SHOULD CONTINUE ON WITH THIS DRUG !!! IT'S RUNNING HAVOC ON ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE TAKEN IT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TAKE NEXT, BUT I KNOW ENOUGH NOT TO TAKE ANYMORE OF "THESE CANCER DRUGS ! " PERHAPS THERE IS NOTHING LEFT FOR ME TO TAKE, IN ANY CASE IT WILL NOT BE A DRUG USED FOR CANCER !!! OUR BODIES ARE FIGHTING PROLIA, SO IT SEEMS THAT IT IS NO GOOD FOR US W/OSTEOPOROSIS. THERE WILL MOST LIKELY BE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ABOUT PROLIA IN THE NEAR FUTURE. ## Even though litigation is the usual course of action for many drugs like Prolia, what I find to be sad, is that when it comes down to finding something else that works, doctors go ahead and prescribe another medication with just as many side effects; st...

Osteoporosis med. Forteo Pen adiministration instructions ## My patient was taking Forteo for 2 months now, but it just so happened that she was not able to purchase another pen ahead of time. Will she able to use the remaining drug in the pen while waiting for the delivery of the next pen? Thank you. ## You should follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer, your doctor, or pharmacist. MJ, it is doubtful, since most will not load and administer it another time, they are meant for their initial uses and that's it. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle aches.
