Hi. I took Hydromorphone 4mg 4 times a day for 11 years, but doc retired and pain management insists on extended release. Oxycontin ER caused my BP to spike high then return to normal in 4 hours..unacceptable. Hydromorphone ER is doing the same thing. Is there something about the extended release that could be causing my blood pressure to spike? Had no problem before switching to ER opiods. ## Hello, Jeanne! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems you're experiencing. No, these medications typically cause low blood pressure, rather than high. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is it possible that your blood pre...

He was going to up my meds at the next visit, but there was no next visit, I am desperate to find a Dr. I will go to NH if I have to, DOES ANYONE know of a clinc or Dr. in my area that is compassionate and gives aa crap about the patient in pain? My back is a mess, sciatica, frac.discs no cartiledge, spondilosis etc thanks ## Hello, Joanne! How are you? Sorry about the situation that you're in, that's terrible. Due to the new regulations that were put in place this year, you'll need to stick with a doctor in your home state, as well as using a pharmacy there. And unfortunately, there is no listing of doctors according...

I am unable to move my bowels from taking Exalgo and other opiods that I have taken for my chronic pain. I have tried taking drugs like Movantik and Amitiza that are supposed to relieve opiod constipation but they have not worked for me. Neither has more fiber, Colace, prunes, miralax etc. Anybody have any amazing remedy??? ## Very sorry about the problem you are having. I've been there, when taking opiates, but increased fiber intake helped me. Have you tried enemas, or suppositories? There are some available via prescription, and some over the counter products, since they are inserted anally, they work directly on the hardened stool. The FDA lists the typical side effects as including irritation, cramping, and diarrhea. Beyond that, you may need to go to the ER for treatment of th...

I suffer with extremely painful MS and have not been on regular opiods since September of 2012.My neurologist had me on up to seven oxycodone 15mg a day along with the fentanyl 50 patches. He left the area and I have been to multiple doctors and I just get passed around now. All I am on now is tramadol.... And that is no comparison.I can't find another neurologist that will write scripts or any other Dr for that matter. Please I beg for some help!!!!!!! ## Hello, Pebbles! How are you? If you're asking them to prescribe narcotics, most doctors are going to refuse, because they are taught to view that as being drug seeking behavior. Have you tried a pain management specialist? Having your PCP refer you to one might be the easiest and quickest way to get the help you need, but be s...

Ive taken small doses of opiods before, and one 15mg abg, but not on a regular basis. I was just wondering how long tye effects will last, amd when it is safe to drink. And what are warning signs I should look out for? I think im going to be ok though. ## IThe drug is morphine sulfate extended-release, generic for MS Contin 15 mg tablets. It is odd you would be prescribed an extended-release medication if you are only taking it occasionally. MS Contin (and its generics) are used for people requiring continuous pain relief and is taken every 12 hrs. MS Contin Extended Release lasts 12 hrs so that xx mg does of morphine is being slowly released rather than the full dose working immediately (but lasting only 4-6 hrs). MS Contin is NOT intended to be taken as needed so it may be a large enou...

saboxil ## I am trying to find information about the use of saboxil (a.k.a. seboxyl) for treatment of chronic pain when opiods have created a tolerance problem. ## I believe the medication you may be referring to is Suboxone, which contains the active ingredient Buprenorphine. It is used to treat severe pain and drug addiction. It is a very powerful opiate and is only used to treat pain, when all other options have been exhausted. It carries some of the same side effects as other narcotics, including: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. You can read more about it here: Was there anything else I could help you with?

I was prescribed both Oxycontin & Oxynorm in 2006 for chronic back pain in 2006, as you would know our system builds up a tolerance to opiods. I ended up on 80 mg of Oxycontin, twice per day & 20 mg of Oxynorm 3 times per day and other meds also. I was still in pain, I believe the weather also effects pain. I slept most of the day & night and had no quality of life and terrible memory loss. It is now 2013 & In the last 2 years I have invested in a infa red sauna, a spa set at hydro temp 40 degrees & a TENS MACHINE. As you would all know as time goes by our body becomes immune to the dosages & pain specialist just keeps increasing the dose. I have gone through un describable pain to reduce my medications myself slowly with the help of the tools mentioned. I would ...

I have severe spinal stenosis and herniated disks with the MRI to prove it. I had a doctors prescribe me heavy opiods for 4 years before disappearing without notice. Every pain management doctor I've called or gone to will not write any scripts. They want to do injections, which I'm all for, but I have to wait two weeks for insurance approval and I'm in a ton of pain now. I cannot find a doctor to help me. I'm in Bergen County which is North Jersey. Can anyone please help?

I am most likely going to be moving to Wisconsin and I wanted to know if it is as bad there as it is here in Florida for chronic pain patients who take opiods. Here the problem is no pharmacies will fill the prescriptions. I have had chronic pain for 5 years and lost my career due to it and am now on disability. I do not ABUSE my meds and have never got in any trouble. I do not take very strong meds one of them is a schedule 3. and the schedule2 is a very low dose. I do not see getting injections as other people have said that alot of doctors do because i have pain everywhere and i have got shots in my neck years ago that were worthless also in my feet that did nothing. ## It is the same all over the U.S. New regulations were put in place last year and people having been encountering pr...

How are you? It is natural for them to drop with age, plus your body will eventually get used to the dose your using and it won't be as effective for you. Has your doctor made any dosage adjustments for you?

I am currently taking 30mg oxycodone 4x daily. I have failed back surg syndrome and many other herniated discs in most levels of entire spine. The recent CDC crackdown is effecting the way docs in Arizona write for opiods here. No one wants to write for immediate release oxycodone (from what I've heard, it's due to people overdosing, selling them, and abusing them). I happen to be someone who takes them as prescribed, and I'm being punished bc of the "others who've screwed it up for ppl like me". My new pain management doc wants to move me to Fentanyl Patches (25mcg @ 10/month), Opana ER 10mg quantity of 60/mo, AND morphine ER (not sure of dose). This seems excessive, and that's where I'm going with this. I'm on Medicare with no Rx coverage. My 30mg o...

I moved to west central Georgia from Hawaii. I have been successfully treated with pain meds for 10 years. After moving here I have had my prescriptions written by my medicaid pc up until more than a month ago. I have tried a pain clinic but found out quick that some of them or against opiods and many are so expensive and want to give injections which don't work for me.I have chrnic pain issues backed uo with medical documentation. I really need help.Would be willing to travel to Atlanta.Anyone know anywhere I can go? Desperate, my quality of life is going to hell.

My pain Dr. by my suggestion wrote me a prescription for Suboxene but without instructions how to take. Do I have to stop the opiod pain meds a certain amt of hrs prior to taking my first Suboxene? Ive been told no can stop the night before and take Sub next AM....also read need to stop opiods 48-72 hrs prior to starting. Can someone with experience please instruct me on what to do. The pharmacist wasn't very helpful either. Thanks in advance. ## Hello, Mickey! How are you? You must be in full withdrawal, before starting Suboxone, otherwise it could throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. There is no specific time frame, it can vary from person to person. The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate, so it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effe...

You people have no idea about how subutex/suboxone works. 1 you don't need to wait anymore than 24 hours to start subs if using H. 2 subs are both agonist and antagonist so once you reach a certain dose they effectively block out any other opiate/opiod that you try to use. 3 taking other opiates/opiods while on subs will NOT make you sick, you just won't feel their effects due to the subs blocking properties. 4 subs are not the magic bullet for addicts as you also become dependent on them and after being on subs for a while you will find that coming off them is VERY difficult and extremely long winded, the best you can hope for is to taper down to the smallest amount you can (I'm taking crumbs here; break your pills into small pieces when you want to get off them) but even d...

My husband has had many back surgeries and procedures - he has taken 200 dalotid in 7 days - he has od'ed on morphien - he went on suboxen for 6 weeks - all was going pretty good - then he started saying he was in pain - then the suboxen wasn't helping - he never was addicted (8 years on opiods) he has a high tolerance - now he stopped the suboxen - and came home with a bag of pills - how do you handle pain without the opiods? ## There are several options, however, they all depend on his medical condition and what it causing his back pain. He could try seeing a chiropractor, massage, relaxation techniques and etc. But as I said, it really depends on what is going to be safe for him to try. Suboxone is an opiate and should have helped with the pain while he was on it. What was he...

Need otc remedy for norco withdrw.anyone have an idea to help lessen withdrawals?ive yet to go wthout and the withdrawals are scaring me ## I have been on norco for 7 years at 6 a day. I have gotten down to 2 a day. Will I have withdrawals? ## Hello sinnerman, According to NIH there is no way to 100% curb the withdrawal symptoms of stopping opiods. According to the American addictions center organization there are some ways that you can allevaite some of the symptoms or at least not make them worse than they need to be. The list is as follows. - Nutritional support, through diet and/or vitamin supplements - Hydration - Hydrotherapy, including baths and whirlpools - Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - Anti-nausea medications - Topical analgesics - Natural sleep supplements - Antidiarr...

Someone has just told me that Gabapentin is the next step up to Morphine. Is this right? ## Simple answer - no. Morphine is an opioid. Gabapentin is generic Neurontin, an anticonvulsant used for pain. Neither Neurontin or gabapentin is an opioid. ## Thanks for that I didn't think it was. I think it was someone being doctor d*** ## Hey Carol, I used to be on opiods for documented pain (as opposed to junkies looking for a high, you know the story) but after the crackdown - even though my GP would still write me scripts for Norco I couldn't get them filled anywhere. I was told that only pain specialists scripts would be filled though others have said that is not necessarily the case. Have been on oxycotin 40mg 3xdaily and percocet 15 as needed. Need a doctor who will spend time with me-long medical history. Any small town area around Austin or within 100 miles. Better yet, one that (internist-GP) who can assist in my adhd meds and knows anything about dextroamphetemine sulphate and how it can reduce pain anywhere from 50-100%. A life without opiods would be amazing. Plus, I have never addressed my ADHD-refused adderall. Have tried all the holistic hippie stuff and neuro/anti-depressants to no avail. Docs don't know what to do with me. ## Amphetamines don't help with the management of pain. There are some drs who will prescribe amphetamines to combat the sidew affects of some of the pain meds. I weigh about 110 pounds and I have been dealing with lower back pain from a fall which injured my tailbone and also have pain in my legs. For six years now . I was wondering how strong the morphine 30 milligram extended release was? I have had loratab before and 20 milligram oxycodone. But I certainly don't want to overdose on it. Can someone help me out? I have a fair tolerance to opiods. ## Hello, Sis! How are you? Each 30mgs of Morphine is actually equivalent to 20mgs of Oxycodone, so Oxycodone is actually 1 and a half times stronger, which should give you some basis for comparison. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. ...
