i am on methadone 5mg twice a day for long term pain. i am on 10 mg oxycodone four times a day for breakthrough pain. i hate methadone, but its a long story having to do with a stint at a clinic. i couldnt tell my doctor that. i have been taking 10 mg opana ir and they work well, i just have built a tolerance to it. i think the 20 mg twice a day along with two 15mg oxycodone for breakthrough should do me well. i cant take the opana er because they make me sick, do you guys think that what i want is a good enough substitute? any comments and suggestions would be helpful. thanks ## Was on both meds- got off both. I get the generic opana er 20 mg. They come like plastic. They are green, feel like plastic, say 20 on one side and E on the other. The plastic crap makes my stomach a mess. There is no instant release Opana, so I assume you're actually talking about the regular release and no, it is only available in 5mgs or 10mgs. What else do you take? Have you consulted your doctor? I injured my back & neck in 1998 & 2001. I have herniated dics L4-L5, & L5-S-1 and Bone Spurs in my Neck. I started out with a Worker’s Compensation Doctor. However they started to deny more & more treatment as time went by. In the Fall of 2014 they denied my Pain Medications. At that point I went to Kaiser Permanente Medicare, if they would treat me for by painful back injury & they said they would, I continued with Opana & Topamax. However, they do not put you “under” for Epidural shots” so I only had a few. They are just too PAINFUL! A local sedative just doesn’t do it for me. My dad had a surgery done on his shoulder and they prescribed her Opana IR 20mg. He had late stage COPD and he wasn't taking any narcotic pain medication prior the surgery. I take Opana myself and it a powerful medication. I know these type of medicines can affect your breathing at high doses. I know Opana is two times stronger the oxycodone. So it is like taking 40 mg of oxycodone. I don't know why they didn't give him like hydrocodone or oxycodone instead at a lower dose. It would been different if he was taking these class of medication where he would been use to them in his system. I have spent so much time trying to get my Opana 20mg er and 10 mg ir filled. I had to start sending my scripts to Optum Rx by mail to have them filled. Honestly I've never seen anything like it. I didn't even have this much trouble getting Oxycotin and Oxycodone filled. My insurance co didn't want to pay for my oxycodone anymore so they suggested I change to Opana. The first couple of months it was ok but then I don't know what happened but when I said I couldn't get them filled anywhere I meant it. SINCE TAKING OPANA 20 MG ER AND OPANA 10 MG IR FOR BREAKTHROUGH HEADACHES I WAS RECENTLY PRESCRIBED THE NEW OPANO 20 MG ER PILLS. IT SEEMS THAT I STARTED GETTING MORE FREQUENT HEADACHES THAN BEFORE, SO MY OTHER DOCTOR PRESCRIBED OPIRAMATE 100 MG. ONCE DAY AT BEDTIME. I have degenerative disc disease and have taken opana ir and er for a while. My doctor has changed me to morphine since opana has left the market temporarily. I do not like the morphine. Could someone out there recommend something comparable to opana er 40 and ir 20 ## Opana is actually back on the market, though still in limited quantities in some areas, so you may want to have your doctor's office check with your local pharmacies to see who has it in stock, so you can go back to it. Taking opana ER 5 mg and 5 mg opana for breakthrough is not really helping. Can I take tylenol as well? ## They can be taken together, unless you've been instructed not to mix them. The FDA warns that these medications may carry the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth. Are you on any other medications? What medical condition is being treated? ## Opana is now being taken off the market. As of Sept 1 2017. I myself have been on opana for 6 years for pain and IR for breakthrough. So Idk what we are going to do now to answer your question though yes when first prescribed opana was also prescribed Vicodin for breakthrough.

I've been taking Opana ER 20mg and Opana IR 10mg for 6 years now. It has been the best in managing my chronic pain. As if having to deal with that pain weren't enough, I now have to worry that the one medication that allows me some peace. Now it won't be available when I need my refill on May 15th. I am terrified of having to deal with my pain without any help and of the world of other problems I will have because of sudden stoppage of my meds. No one seems to have an alternative to offer. Opana costs too much for the same thing that Oxymorphone does. Opana is about $500+/-, while Oxymorphone is $47. ## opana and oxymorphone are the same thing, and you can get high off it. They are avaliable in 10's ir and 20's & 50's in er. ## Opana works for me. I just picked up 130 pills for $1,000 and some change. I have been taking Opana for over 4 years now and it has been a God send. It is by far the best pain medication that I have ever taken, and I have been prescribed many over the years. I went to the pharmacy this month and when I opened my bottle I noticed that the pills are round now instead of an octaganal shape. The bottle says that they are a new shape but the medicine is the same. Well... I have to disagree with Endo on this one. I was experiencing withdrawal symptons for the first four days of taking the new shaped pill and my pain level was much higher than with the old ones. When taking the old ones my pain level was at a one or two most of the time with a few parts of the day a four or five. Looking for a Pain Doctor in North Carolina to prescribe me my medicine Opanas er so I can continue to support my family. I broke my neck in 2010. my dr prescibed oxymorphone er 60 mg. and oxymorphone ir 5 mg. I was able to purchase the ir tablets in generic (but they cost about 50.00 more than the oxycodone ir 20 mg. that I was taking before he switched my meds) I was not able to get the oxymorphone er 60 mg. in generic form. Due to present eligibility to medicare, finding a drug plan to cover oxycontin is a real problem. The amount does not appear to be the problem but the brand\type is. Any idea what I could switch to ? Currently take four 60mg per day along with oxy IR 20mg for those sudden pain spikes. ## There is no generic for Oxycontin, which could be why they don't want to cover it. However, there are other options that are available as generics, such as MS Contin, Opana ER, Zohydro, and Fentanyl. The FDA warns that all of these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Those are just a couple of the options you could ask your doctor about trying. Does anyone else have any suggestions to add?

As most of you here, I've been taking MS Contin 60 mg and Oxycodone IR for break through among other meds of course. I have had RSD/CRPS for 26 years and Lupus for about 5 years. I live in PA now and never really considered the ramifications of moving to a state with such pain med issues. Due to job loss I've had to reschedule my meds taking fewer of them and being in worse pain. I don't want to find just a prescribing doctor. I want to continue my treatment. I was on the Oxycontin 80mg 3x a day for 16 yrs. I have been tried on alot of other things . I went on methadone w/ 2 40mg of oxy then they quit making the methadone that iI took. None of the kadian or other things in that class have worked. I am now taking ms contin 100mg. a day w/15 mg. 2x a day it is not enough and my Dr. who gave me a hard time off and on about the oxy's now refuses to do the irs that are still available with any other meds. I take Opana 20mg twice a day, just had a urine test & came up negative! Also take Opana IR 10 mg 4 times a day for breakthrough pain. WHY DID MY URINE COME UP NEGATIVE!!! Now my doctor is taking off my meds will not refill my script..WTF!!! ## Have you changed anything in your diet, your fluid intake, or activity levels? Those can all have an effect on it. There is really no way that anyone here can give you a definitive answer.
