On Prednisone 20mg For 5 Years

My mom has been on prenisone (5mg-20mg) for over five years now for the treatment of fibromyalgia. First the doctor thought it could be polymyaglia, but when the symptoms never got better he diagnosed her to have fibromyalgia. Her pain is all throughout her body and sometimes feels like she can't get out of bed do to sore muscles and joints. She is constantly bruised not knowing how she got them. In 2010, she had symptoms of a heart attack, the doctor told her to "up" her prednisone and she would be fine... Noon that day she suffered a major heart attack. Now, four years later and 60+ pounds greater her has become dependent on the drug. She feels so dependent of this drug becuase she feels like nothing else "helps" the pain. I have to start this in the morning, is this a lot at once I have to do this 2x a day for a bad cough. ( I have had it for 3 weeks) Also should I take a lower mg closer to time to get off it or what. I'm scarf to take this I took it before and it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest and had night sweats. Any one take this much a day? ## Hi Angie, I don't know if your cough is related to Asthma in any way, but for someone who is 12 years old and up, the dose for asthma is 40 mg orally every 12 hours. That being said, I don't think it is unsafe to be taking this much, however if it has made you feel ill in the past you may want to find an alternative. About every 6 to 8 weeks I go on a 16 day decreasing round of Prednisone starting w 40mg x 4 days, 30mg x 4 days, 20mg x 4 days, and 10mg x4 days. I have been doing this for 2 years. The results of the medicine are wonderful. I am 72, and actually have flashes of my youth from the drug. Near the end of the 6 to 8 weeks without the Prednisone I am quite miserable. I am interested in knowing the risks of decreasing to the 20mg level and just staying on long term for 6 months. ## The NIH lists the long-term risks of steroid usage as possibly including weight gain, moon face, fluid retention, congestive heart failure and immune suppression. Have been taking Prednisone 20mg pills split into 4 pieces for a bronchial infection. The pills are expired from 2010. I'm taking the taper off 6 to 1 portions per day. It doesn't seem to be taking effect, although it has worked in the past. Could it have lost it's effectiveness? ## As far as expired meds go, according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. Hello, I have been living with these problems for many years and as of now, I am taking 2 shots of Cimzia a month, 5mg prednisone a day And 25mg of norco a day. I have in the past taken Remicade, Humara and one other biologic that I have forgotten. My Primary prescribes the norco. The others are handled by the Rheumatologist. I am working full time as a steamfitter and work on gas pipelines. consequently most days If I am working the pipeline I wont take the norco as prescribed so as not to be impaired while working, I have about 4 years until I can retire.
