My 11 year old daughter was prescribed chewable Augmentin twice a day for strep throat. Since it upsets her stomach, I can't give her one before school. Can I give her 1 at 3 pm and the other before bed at 9 pm? ## No, that wouldn't a good idea. Since it's an antibiotic, the intent is to keep it regularly spaced out, to keep the levels up in her body long enough for the bacteria to be eradicated. Thus, you'd be leaving too long of a gap, between the 9pm one and the 3pm one going round the clock. As to the nausea, has she tried taking it with food? Other side effects may include non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. ## a doctor prescribed Augmentin 625mg for my 10year old boy who had a congested chest and throat infection. He is 39kg.He has a history of asthma though he see...

So my son, who is apparently "Hard to Handle" at school, has been placed on Adderall XR 20 milligrams once a day every morning. In the beginning he started at a lower dose and it worked but had very poor side effects making his come down brutal. He had fits of rage, anger and crying fits. I am trying to find something different that will work for him that isn't so harsh because now along with the comedown he is throwing up at least 4 times a day at school around noon everyday. His test scores and homework scores have gone up exponentially but that does not provide much reassurance when his attitude and emotional and physical well-being is suffering. His doctor refuses to change anything and says that we are overreacting and that these are common things to expect with this me...

My soon to be 13 year old son has been recommended to start Lovan which I understand is same as Prozac. He has suffered with anxiety issues for several years and it has worsened now that he recently started high school (in Sydney Aust.). He is often stressed and unhappy. We are worried about possible side effects and would like to know the experience of others with youngsters on it. He is having counseling as well at the moment. Has the drug helped and what side effects were experienced? ## This is one of the few that is approved by the FDA for use in teenagers. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, weight loss and dry mouth. Though I'm an adult, I've been on it for several years for anxiety and other symptoms associated with perime...

Can I still benefit from taking 10 year old Morphine Sulfate 20mg/ml oral solution ## Hi Smith! After a medication expires, it lose"s it's effectiveness. Especially after 10 years. U should call your Doctor 4 a new prescription. ## @Smith, According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. I don't know whether or not the drug you have happens to...

I was prescribed adderall a while ago when I was in college I'm back in grad school & I'm a single mother w/limited insurance I really need to find a dr in md/dc who will perscribe it to me easily w/out a million drs appointments any recommendations would be helpful thxs ## Hi sjmom, To my knowledge, virtually any type of doctor can see you for ADHD (pediatrician, psychiatrist, regular MD). Whether or not they want to pursue treatment is up to them and if so they might go for another medication rather than Adderall. Chances are if you walk in and say you have ADHD, then ask for an Adderall script you won't get it because it is seen as what they call "drug seeking behavior". Some advice I can give you is to not specifically ask for any 'specific medication'...

I understand that it takes a few weeks to have the full effect.. he also has a sleeping dissorder!! He wakes extremely early sometimes 3 in the morning.. will this help him sleep better and could this put him in a zombie like state?? What dosage is most common? ? It only lasts about 5 hours, which is enough for his time in school. Is there another option or a better drug? ## Mike has now developed ocd.he has repitive touching motions.must touch everyone and everything 2 times. ## Hello, Mimi! How is your son doing? There is an extended release formulation of Adderall that might work better for him. It is something you can ask his doctor about. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, insomnia, and nervousness. Is he on any other medications?

I have hydrocodone that was prescribed in 2009. Are they still good? ## Hi gina, According to two different articles from the LA Times and Harvard Medical School, respectively, they should still be safe/effective for up to 15-30 years or more. So as long as you kept them stored properly (i.e in a cool dark place), I wouldn't worry at all about them degrading so soon. I hope this helps!

My 15 year old son has been on some form of stimulants since he was in the 1st grade. He is currently on 70 mg vyvanse. We are trying to get him off of it, but he is having really bad withdrawals so much that it interfering with his school work. Should we try giving him 30mg or is that too low a dose after 50. Any suggestions? ## Tapper him down, if you have the capsules an hes on 70mg's, start by cutting the capsule in half and power the powder on the table, now split it into 7ths and give him 6/7ths of it for 3 days then after those 3 days give him 5/7ths and etc... ## Have you consulted his doctor for assistance? After being on these types of medications for such a long period of time, a slow taper is definitely the safest and easiest way to go. However, it is going to be very di...

i am quite worried about a hospital my son is in. He is 10 yrs old and was taken there on bad judjement he made by taking a air gun(unloaded) to school to protect himself from some neighborhood bullies. He has been kept there against our will, because dfs got involved and threatened to take him from us if we did not let him go there to be evaluated. He is still there after 3 weeks and counting, after we have asked them to let him go in his local doctors care. I saw him today, they have him on risperdal 2mg 2 xs daily and depacote 375 mg 2 xs daily. He is severely slurred in his speech and very sleepy and Im very scared what they are doing to him. My daughters doc placed her on Adderall XR starting at 20mg. She is almost 11 but tall and over 100lbs which was docs reason for starting higher. I haven't given it yet. The pharmacist told me it's a middle of the road dose but most start lower. Of course he didn't see how big she is. Anyone able to let me know if this is normal to start at 20mg? She has been tested in school, by a psychologist, and by parent and teacher rating scales. She also tests as having some ODD which the doc thinks is more from the ADD. She is not diagnosed as hyper. Please let me know! ## It can vary by age and weight, so it is always best to follow a doctor's instructions, but don't be afraid to ask them questions, if you are worried. I have somewhat severe Crohn's disease and was diagnosed at 15 but had bad stomach issues long before that. I'm now 19 years old and I've been on just about every treatment for the disease and nothing has ever worked. A few years ago I had 1.5 feet of my colon removed since it had become so inflamed and ulcerated. I've tried everything but nothing helps it seems. I spend everyday in severe pain to the point where I can't work and I can't go to school. I'm watching my youth pass me by and being completely revolved around my disease. I often go to the bathroom 10-20 times a day and my stomach is constantly in severe pain with spasms and joint pains as well. I've been on Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin, and now I'm just on 4 15 mg oxycodone hcl a day. I...

My doc after looking at my MRI for my back, me having no insurance, sent me to a specialist that i can't afford. He stopped all pain pills and put me off to someone I can't pay to see. So after having pain problems since march of 2013 and being prescribed pain meds, it suddenly stops and he won't refill them. I found some vicodin 5-500 (hydrocodone-Acetaminophen ) from 2011 and wondered if I can still use them for my back pain. ## You could try, they probably won't be as strong. Just try 1at a time though, at 1st ## @sweeper2, This may come as a surprise, but according a study from Harvard Medical School, many medications can remain effective for even up to 15 years beyond their listed expiration date. I have not seen the actual list of drugs used in this study, but I...

I'm a 17 year old Junior in High School and I have been taking 70 mg of Vyvanse for longer than I can remember, even before 7th grade. Recently my boyfriend has been telling me it's making me depressed. I can usually tell when my medicine has worn off and one night I was acting happier than usual because of that. He told me I should just stop taking it, but my mother who's recently been very controlling tells me otherwise. Would it really be that bad to just drop it? Also, out of curiosity, i often forget I take my pill and end up taking a second one. How much is too much? ## Hello, Himeko! How are you? How are you and your son? This is a generic for Adderall, it is a stimulant that's used to treat conditions such as ADHD, narcolepsy and shift work sleep disorder. Whether or not it's a good idea really depends on your son, if he really is that out of hand with ADHD and needs the help for school, then it might be good to try it, but if his condition is very mild, then a medication may not be necessary.
